not even SSD fixes this?

The engine was fragged from its inception. So, no it won't work smoothly. Not unless Piranha is moving their arses and make an engine patch. Not gonna happen, though. Piranha gave up on the G3 graphic engine a long time ago and they've admitted that the engine was rushed because Jowood wanting the game out faster and them not having enough time to test it properly.
Risen's engine is an evolution of that same engine, but with less problems.

Risen's engine is the same and it's no evolution. Sure, they polished it a bit because they had time, but the only reason why Risen runs better is because they severely nerfed the engine. I tweaked some stuff in a file for Risen and it ran worse than Gothic 3, while looking worse, as in, it had more hickups. It was playable for me though. I also never had a problem with that in Gothic 3 and with 1.75 it runs even better.
Edit: vurt, you may want to try what this guy said: http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1140053-Gothic-3-Patch-1-75-release/page2?p=18844783&viewfull=1#post18844783
It works even better here.

There's an entry for each day of this month, so lots of things to read!
Can a mod please rename the title of this thread to "Gothic III"? Or bring back the one from the useless void?

There's a lot of mods but I think only a few have full English translations, community patch also does not fix everything and if I read correctly it also adds some undesired tweaks such as using the (worse) texture changes from the expansion.
I don't know much about the various big mods available, different storylines, full overhauls and well there's a lot of stuff available.
The English section of World Of Gothic was also closed a while ago but most of the content is still available on the German forums though of course English and German will be pretty mixed in those topics.

I'd be OK with only the CP and a big texture mod, but I can't find one texture pack to rule them all. No one seems to have made a proper modguide for this one, strange. Thanks JB, I'll have to look for what's available I guess.

I'm having a problem and a strange thing happening, I hope someone still remembers this game and can answer me. First, the only conversation option I have with Hamlar is "E". Could this be a problem with the questpakket and content mod I have installed? It's the first time I use these two. Second, wasn't the first battle supposed to be hard? I remember having problems with it when I first played the game (getting knocked down a lot), but now I killed the orcs in four powerhits. Is it the alternative balancing thing in the CP, which was supposed to make the game more challenging? My mind might be playing tricks on me though.

The intriguing story and the excellent combat system places the AC series on a whole different level.

Yep, must admit, I built a new computer recently, and thought I would try G3 again just to use it as a benchmark of just how awesome my new comp is or just how bad Piranah was at optimizing shit, as this is the third build I've played it on.
I'm not sure if it was the SSD upgrade or the i7 upgrade, but it was SUPER smooth, unless I pulled out my torch....which resulted in a 2 second lag to just light it. After it was lit, it ran smooth again.
Even so, with everything on max, except for AA, and the game running amazing......still uninstalled it after about an hour.
This was with the expansion and community fixes btw.

Oh wow, greedy publisher (synonym for JooWood) forced developers to release buggy game and it turned out technically shit. Aler the media. Shocker. Breaking news.

Yeah, PB wasn't at fault. Look at their recent 'finished' games.
