They don't have the EVA packs until it's researched now? I saved a kerbal once by making him push the craft out of orbit (this version). Very Happy

Well, fuck. I was about 8s short of fuel for my maneuver burn to get Jebediah Kerman back home from the Mun. So now he's stuck in orbit around the Mun with no way back. Laughing Laughing

Do those little green bastards ever die from anything other than a speedy impact with a solid object? Or can I eventually somehow mount a rescue mission for him? I don't have any EVA gear or RCS thrusters yet so I don't know how I could get close enough to his capsule without those. But once I get those parts can I get close enough to get his ass and put him in the ship? I guess I'll need that capsule with multiple seats too.

Laughing

This remind me my first mission to the Mun.
I went out of fuel as well, leaving my poor lonely Kerbal at some thousand km orbit around Kerbin.

I then sent a 3 manned pod (don't forget to free a seat before launch ^^) to rescue him.
Here is a shot of his recovery :

I still remember the smile on his face when he saw us coming. Smile

Hell, if they do I don't know how to operate them. I can get out and I can let go but it doesn't look like they're wearing the EVA suit and the normal movement keys don't do anything (unless on the surface, of course). I just assumed it wasn't there and I had to research it. Laughing

I also didn't read shit about some of the new things and only did the tutorials. I kept getting pissed off trying to fix my orbit inclination so I could get to the mun at more then two points in the orbit. Which is what I did the first time I got in orbit around the mun - my rocket was so unstable I couldn't control it well and was at about a 45 degree inclination. So when I looked on youtube and discovered how to set up maneuvers on the map.... fuuuuuck. Best tool ever.

Then I got back and I realized I forgot to remove one last coupler so all my science capsules fell off with the engine and legs with I popped the chute. FUCK. hah.

Be aware that EVA controls are still 'early pre Alpha'.
You can just pan for now, no rotations via controls.
Best way to control a Kerbal on EVA with jetpack is to stay on "AUTO view", point in the direction you want to go with the mouse and hit 'Space bar' to reorient attitude to camera.

Hopefully they will give us proper EVA controls soon, because EVA are becoming important now with science report/transfer.

THIS

Try heading 90° eastwards to benefit from kerbin rotation to be more efficient and the most important rule:

Vertical speed gets you up BUT horizontal speed keeps you there Wink

after landing and returning from both the mun and minmus (and all the easy kerbin science), I had enough science to unlock the final tier of heavy rocketry and the nuclear engines.

This got me to a low Duna orbit and back:

Hex asparagus formation has always worked the best for me.

The trip took about 1 and a half years, long time for poor Jeb to be sitting in that pod.
I was dissapointed that Duna didn't have any biomes, could have got a ton more science.

That's what I used to do until I started using the built-in maneuver computer. Like newty said, go up until 9-10k then about 45degrees on the 90 (east) line on the navball. Switch back to the map view and bring up the navball with the tab in the bottom center of the screen. Zoom in on your trajectory and put the mouse over it near the mark for the apoapsis. Click it and then click the add maneuver button. You'll have six icons that you can pull to change the projected orbit. Pull the prograde burn icon (looks like a circle with three small lines coming from it. Same as the one on the navball. Don't pull it too far as it can be finicky at times. Pull it until you get a dashed line showing an orbit around the planet. Adjust it until you get a good circular orbit (periapsis and apoapsis are close to the same). You'll notice a new bar and two timers to the right of the navball. On the navball, line up with the new icon that shows (it's darkish blue and somewhat circular for me) as that's you're burn marker. Then, when the countdown gets close to 0 (you can accelerate and slow down time with . and , and you can start the burn a little early if you want), punch the engine to full throttle until your actual orbit is close to the projected orbit. You can use x to quickly cut the throttle.

Well, that's two of those fuckers I need to rescue now Very Happy At least I was able to land on the mun finally. Only have a sliver of fuel left though so he's stuck there.

I've decided to work on getting enough science to get the PPD-10 Hitchhiker Storage Container under the Specialized Construction tab on the tech tree. By then I should be able to mount a rescue mission. For now, I think I'll go for a minmus orbit. Smile

I wonder if this will drop any more than the current 33% on a sale over the holidays.

Wow, just did a round trip to Eloo. With two material labs and two goo cans (1 each for high orbit and low orbit) and crew and eva reports, gained a total of 1200 science.

I used the same craft as above, except this time I refueled it to full while in kerbin orbit. I really didnt think I was going to have enough to return home as I was going through the 14+ minute nuclear engine burn to encounter Eloo.

After doing a 10,000m flyby of Eloo and completing all the science experiemnts, I started charting my way back to Kerbin. Luckily, you dont have to brake to land back on Kerbin, as the atmosphere will do that for you, so I kept adjusting my course until I had my path slamming right into the planet.

In order to do that though I had to do two year-long orbits around the sun, but finally, 5 years after takeoff (3 hours for me) Jeb was standing back on Kerbin. Even had some spare fuel left over.

I remember when I first saw the nuclear engines, I was like, what the fuck are these useless things for?

Flash sale right now : http://store.steampowered.com/app/220200/
"only" -40% though, but it highly worth the money already.

@dataschmuck

Great job, that is tons of science Shocked
I think I will never be able to get as much science in a single mission, using Mods like Remotech (communication satt), Deadly Reentry (burn up or smash on bad reeentry), Life support (oxygen, CO2 management) ... simply won't allow me this sort of mission. ^^

I am still on Mun missions for now, still early in development.
Here is my second mission to the Mun "Kapollo III" summary :

Kapollo II LEM from previous mission was left on Mun orbit.
(Kapollo I was a big fail and didn't even reach space)
This mission purpose is to update this LEM with newly researched items and to perform a new land on a different Mun biome.

You don't need to bring the materials lab or goo canister back. You can transfer the data to the landing can or pod using EVA. And you still get full science points.

My landers all have 4 cans and 4 of each experiment, which is enough to max out science in a location. A single Kerbal does all the experiments and only the cans are brought back to Kerbin.

Finally, Bill Kerman has been rescued from his long stay on the mun. Barely.

I had more than enough to get to the mun. Dumped my last stage with fuel still on it. Didn't time it right and the landing spot was in the dark. I had no external lights so I couldn't see the surface at all. Wasted a lot of fuel just getting it on the surface and even then I was lucky. Landed about a kilometer from the other lander so Bill had a little walk/rcs flight to get back. I had enough fuel on the lander to escape the moon and get back into Kerbin orbit and then ran out. I need to change my lander design to be more fuel efficient and carry more fuel. Or, have it as a dockable module rather than a stage so I can refuel the lander once back in lunar orbit so there aren't any fuel issues. Assuming I can dock without blowing shit up Very Happy I was able to alter my orbit enough with the RCS to get back home though. What's funny is that the the closer we got to landing on Kerbin the more excited Bill got. He was waving and smiling and just seemed to be excited. haha. The guy that flew the ship was just sitting there chilling out.

Now I need to whip up another rescue ship and go get the two that are in orbit around the moon. That will be a different challenge. On one hand I don't have to worry about landing so fuel shouldn't be an issue. I'll just keep the same design for now and just make two trips. I'd try for both but one of the landers is in a retrograde orbit and they are vastly different inclinations and orbits. It'll be easier to make two trips. Smile

Nice !
Congrats for landing on the Mun in darkness without any light Smile
Yep rejoining 2 ship with one being in a retrograde orbit is kinda suicidal.

My last mission was a "SDA - Space Debris Annihilator" one.
After a bad stage timing, I had an escape tower part orbiting around Kerbin Pa 2'500'000km / Pe 150km, quite dangerous for future missions so I have to do something about it.

Here is that bitch.
