I definitely ended up being late to the party.
I never was into japan-anime-style subculture, they are too alien for my personality, it's just not my cup of tea. Back in the days i tried to get into it, read some visual novels, attempted watching some anime series, but just couldn't get into.
After playing "Katawa Shoujo", i realized that i found my GOTY 2012... in 2014.

First of all "Katawa Shoujo" is not a game in strict sense, its visual novel and there's little player interaction.
If you never played VNs, its, basically, a book with illustrations (and few animations) where you are, as reader, from time to time able to affect the plot.

About: "Katawa Shoujo" is life drama. This is not "easy reading", "time-killer" or entertainment kind of book.

Plot: Normal boy, has his life changed when heart defect forces him to move to a new school for people with disabilities and those who require medical monitoring. There he meets new friends and perhaps love.

Adult content disclaimer:You must be warned that "Katawa Shoujo" contains graphical adult scenes.
If you are stricktly against this type of content you can disable it and enjoy the story fully without any NSFW scenes. Do not let this stop you from expiriencing the product.
But in the essense, it is not some kind of pervertion game about banging cripples as you could have thought.
You won't find any adult content, HOURS into the every storyline, and it occupies bare minutes. "Katawa Shoujo" is by no way something like "Fifty shades". Adult content placed there to not cater to reader.
It's not "Game of thrones" type of product either, where where you find nudes and bed scenes in and out of place.
I have strong personal opinion that those scenes actually add value to the story or some nice touch and flavour or even comical effect (remmember its the story about teenagers where sex is supposed to be awkward and confusing, after all recall your own escapades in that age and how you felt).

Yea, it happens Smile There's actually quite a lot of anime and many visual novels worth watching/reading - it's just that Japan continues to dish out soooo muuuch of useless, mindless, over the top shit, that when a gem happens it's easy to miss it under the pile of rubbish. If you manage to find it, though, it often turns out it shines so brightly you'll be hard pressed to find something of equal value elsewhere.

I actually haven't read Katawa Shojo yet, so I just might give it a try Smile

Game actually developed by westeners, it named and takes action in Japan as tribute. It even doesn't have official Japanese translation still, 2 years after release...

As for trying it out - go for it for sure. You won't be disapointed i bet Wink
Besides it's 100% FREE so nothing stops one from giving a shot.

Few more reviews:

http://jeff-vogel.blogspot.com/2013/12/katawa-shoujo-sex-stuff-in-games-and.html

Quote:
Basically, what I’m going to do is publicly throw my support behind a sexually explicit dating sim that takes place in a school for the disabled. (Yes. You read that right.) It's kind of hard to do without coming off as a perv or a weirdo[...]
[...]It sounds, from any casual description, like a playground for pervs and fetishests.
It's not. It's a quiet, deliberately paced story about young love, growing up, and discovering sexuality, one of the best I've seen[...]

Quote:
When I first heard that a visual novel centered around dating girls with physical disabilities was being made, my first thought was "only in Japan[...]
[...]heading in, I was sure this would be at best a satire of visual novels and at worst a horribly insensitive, offensive, racist, sexist pile of irreverent hate. I never expected it to be the best visual novel I have ever played.
[...]Katawa Shoujo is an excellent visual novel. It takes a delicate issue and treats it with all the respect it deserves, while not tip-toeing around it. Moreover, it delivers a touching slice-of-life story—or five of them[...]

Quote:
[...]certain morally indignant members of the gaming community [...] declare that the entire game is nothing more than crass, exploitative, fetishistic hentai fap-fodder[...]
Fortunately the people going into Katawa Shoujo looking to be outraged by handicapable hand-jobs are going to be sorely disappointed, as will the deviants actively looking forward to them.
Instead, moral crusaders and chronic onanists alike will find a poignant collection of stories dealing with love, sadness, disability and growing up.

Read it ages ago was pretty good for a weebo eroge but it doesnt hold a candle to high class japanese VNs like Steins;Gate,Ever17 most KEY VNs especally Clannad , Little Busters and my favourite Rewrite, G-senjou no Maou and Grisaia no Kajitsu also had some fantastic routes there are tons more these are just my favourites and most of those have no ero scenes at all.
I recommend fuwanovel.org if you are interested in this genre its a great fansite most fantranslated stuff can be found there just sort by EGS Score.

G-senjou no Maou is very nice indeed. Personally I also loved Fate/Stay Night, esspecially the second and third routes (there are three major and almost completely different stories showing different perspectives and details and each one is better than the last). Others worth reading include Yume Miru Kusuri (full romance, but the characters are quite deep and music is fantastic) and - if, and only if you can stomach some very bad, disturbing violence and general darkness - Kara no Shoujo. It's a murder mystery with a very eerie theme, set in Japan in the fifties, that actually lets you do detective work. The outcome of the story is hugely dependant on how perceptive and smart you are and it's very easy to not get to the end at all - or to wrongfully think you did Wink Fantastic game, possibly the best one in the genre I've ever experienced, but - as I've already said - definitely not for everyone.
