I don't know why i'm really writing but it just feels good to get it off my chest. I study medicine here in Sweden, that is trying to become a medical doctor (M.D license) and this semester has been going really bad for me. I've had some personal issues like finding out that my ex cheated on me in the beginning of the semester and family trouble so there has been quite a lot of drama since August. During this time I lost my edge in school, my motivation pretty much went away completely. It was tough at first going through all that and trying to study but at the end I got through the mess but I'm still without my motivation. I failed my first exam in mid-December and now I have another exam in two days time that I will most likely fail as well.

After failing the first exam in December I promised my self that I would get my shit straightened out and actually study for the one approaching right now. I totally fucked that up, couldn't find my motivation and ended up just staying up late every night doing useless shit like watching movies, sports and so on. Essentially it feels like my motivation for studying has gone to hell, my self-discipline in all regards has gone to hell as well. I go to bed late, don't take care of my self as I'm supposed to. Just a really big dip in life. I know it's not related to my ex or my family since all of that is straightened out. It's just that my motivation to do study is gone. After the exam on Thursday I have about 2 weeks before I can retake the one I failed in December and I need to make it count since I need to pass that one and the next one after that to make sure I get my student loans for the whole semester..

Have you guys ever been in this predicament? I feel like i'm totally slipping in my studies, two failed exams in a row is pretty bad. I've never experienced this as I've always done well in school. Do you guys have any tips on restoring that kind of self-discipline? Maybe it's a pretty vague thing to get advice on but I'm guessing that I'm not the only one who has gone through this...

All in all I just want to find a way to get back to being 100% dedicated to my studies and not let other things distract me but I'm having a really hard time to motivate my self

Thanks for listening.. or reading that is Razz

Been there. Found out my first missus was sleeping around the time I was studying. Lost all motivation to keep dragging it on and I dropped out, having been one of the best students before. But in the end I don't regret it. I got a good job, and didn't waste most of my time with books(although the things I learned did help me at times, so I don't regret taking it up either). Just decide if it is what you want to be doing for the rest of your life, and if you see any glimpse of opportunity, jump for it. You're bound to finally find your thing Smile

Keep it simple, people aren't worth shit compared to your personal success, the more you feel they're affecting your path negatively, the better it would be to cut them off your life with blunt force and never think of them again.

Studying medicine too and ive got the hardest exams right now (whole patoanatomy and patophysiology). Usually ive failed at least 1 exam each year since I couldnt muster up enough motivation and discipline. Luckily after failing ive always managed to get myself together. I had a shitty personal life matter happen to me also just when exams started about half a year ago, but I managed to pull through somehow. Have some faith in yourself and your abilities. if youve managed to do it before, you still have it in you. Im at a breaking point myself at the moment. Way too little time to get this fucking knowledge in my head, but ill try my hardest now and even when I fail, the repeat exam will be easier to study for after this.

Try physical activities to get your head straight or try studying with other people while reciting stuff to each other. Anyways, hold on and I hope youll succeed in finding your mojo again Smile

Everything goes better in the end if you fight for yourself, dont lose focus on what you want and need no matter what, i lost a relationship long ago and i lost almost 2 years worth of university because of my mood.... boy do i regret it now...

Those are all good advice! (except for Sellob's Cool Face Laughing)

Seriously though, stay away from the people who don't deserve your time, focus on yourself and on your future (if you still want to be a doctor), and some physical activity can only help too...

You need to realize that given the circumstances it's pretty normal for you to feel this way, but you're the only one who can change things and get out of this predicament.

I lack motivation as well, but that's because I'm too empty pocketed to do anything about it. Can I have a few millions?

To me one of the biggest motivations, was to get my internship at the company I am working for today. Seeing the actual work life, earning some money and having a regular day structure lifted me up and made me finish my school and write my thesis. Before that I dragged my studies for several years, because I had no motivation, stayed up until 6am, played games, ate junk food and did basically nothing productive.

Living life is all about making up goals as one goes on. Basically, pretending that certain stuffs have great meaning in one's life, and it's a natural process. Nothing to look down upon.

However, once the individual starts suffering from certain mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, etc. - the individual then starts seeing through the whole charade and living life becomes unnecessarily difficult with the natural having become unnatural.

Solution:

Fix the fucking depression
- through self-improvement programs like exercising(cardio, weight lifting), meditating, going to your favorite place, etc.,

- making some daily progress in your work,

- rewarding yourself at the end of the day by watching tv, movie, playing games, etc.,

- dreaming of a better life.

Thanks for the input and advice guys! I really do appreciate it...

I don't know if I'm really depressed or feeling any form of anxiety or any other mental illness so to speak.. I was pretty down about my ex a few months ago but I'm quite over it. It's just a pure lack of motivation. I had a talk with my parents and I'm considering taking a break for at least 6 months if my re-exams don't pan out. I have a lot of spare money at the side which I can see myself traveling the world with for 2-3 months. I am really sure that I do want to become a doctor. I've been shadowing other doc's for some time now and every time I get a great feeling that it's something I really want to spend my life working as. But as we all know, studying something and actually performing a job are two very different things..

I have been going steady to the gym for 3x a week for about a year now but lately I've been slipping there as well. So i'm just going to try to do a reset and go back to the basics. Waking up early, getting all work done by latest 6pm and then focus on other things. Hopefully going back into a good and healthy daily routine will get me going again. After failing one exam and failing the other one tomorrow I really do feel ashamed of myself and my latest performances in school, but not only that but also how I've decided to go about my life.. So i'm pretty excited to turn everything around and get serious again.. hopefully i'll be able to turn this around and get out of this slump Smile

There are some great advice that have been posted here and I'll make sure to keep them in mind, thanks guys Smile

@Razacka2 Get reconciled with your ex and go travel together. India is a nice destination, I believe.

my experience end up different.
in the second year i failed lost of exams. cause from my pov i had a lot of useless shit to learn. without any connection to the reason i chosed that academy.
so i dropped.
second, again.
third again.
now, at the age of 35 i finally finished one, on which i was allowed to actually chosed what i wish to learn. after like 5 different tries.
i begun to work before going to university, and i still work in the same domain and work place like 18 years ago. good salary, noone is bothering me.

Yeah, after high school I thought that the times of useless shit are over now that I'm to go to one of the best technical universities in the country. Silly me. During those 5 years, there were maybe 5 useful classes (topics, courses, whatever they're called). Some would be useful if it wasn't for the shitty lecturers.

That.

I don't know what direction in medicine you're taking exactly, but it sounds like it would be good for you to just get a side job actually doing it.

For me it was much the same as Pumpy in the sense that what made me finish uni was the work I got to do. Fortunately for me my second uni was pretty good on that front, since every project we did pretty much was "real" work. We got to do projects for big companies like Vodafone, as well as smaller but infinitely more interesting ones with handicapped kids for example. That's what made me want to finish it (since without papers you're nothing these days).

Note that I say second uni; the first one I went to (which technically is "better") had none of that. Lots of theory, but not actually doing anything. That wasn't for me and if I hadn't quit when I did, I probably would never have gotten any kind of degree Smile

So maybe that's an idea as well, poke around at uni, see if there's any extra-curricular projects you can take part in? Probably about 30% of what I did at uni was extra-curricular.
