i love the artillery sfx in this game. despite everything else that's crap, i love how bombarding artillery that is off screen skill gives a dull boom. You get a deep impression of the war going on. It's nice to watch a building you're attacking, hear the dull explosion, and then watching the canon ball tear through whatever you're shooting at and hearing that explosion real loud. The other little bit of enjoyment is watching the ai send peasants to a resource you're guarding with falconets (the anti infantry artillery). Seeing the canonball bash into the peasant sending him skidding across the ground while the ball rolls aimlessly away after hitting the turf. Some cool little details. Utterly useless in an rts sense, but amusing to watch nonetheless.
still, the artwork is really drab and boring. I don't think I've ever played a game that sounds better than it looks, lol.
Oh, the music is junk for ES standards. I have the AoM songs and AoE2 songs as mp3s in my playlist, they sound so good (especially the egyptian songs from aom). But nothing from this game is remotely catchy.
i can has computar?!

Those of you getting "host has cancelled game" I believe one of you is behind a router, this game really hates people behind networks.

PC Games MUST be coded for Routers these days. Pathetic if not! Ensemble isn't known for such BS although they did fix their DirectIP support in AoM in a v1.1 patch.
However, something just doesn't fit: I checked the age3.exe and does v4.0105.0919.3236 make sense? I've never seen a PC Game with a file version like that when its FINAL RETAIL. It always starts with v1.xxxxxx or whatever. Most bizarre.
Also.. annoying bugs..
1) When a group of villagers are cutting down wood or hunting for food, the odd one or two of them get left behind and do nothing. Ugh!
2) Artillery/Siege units sometimes don't do attack-move properly and just keep going into their deaths. Bah!
3) YOU CAN'T BUILD WALLS OVER TRADE ROUTES ! What the flying f**K?! So if yer unforunate enough to be near one at your startpoint and you need a wall to keep the other side out for a time you have to leave the trade route open. Sad. GET A FRICK'N GATE for gawd sake! Its not Roman times ya know! Shheshhh! Even a large gate to open/close against Trains! <sigh>
4) Beyond Lackluster pre-game Skirmish/MP options - There is nowhere near as many options like AoM had! Guess inflation and cut-backs are taking their toll! Hey Ensemble, get a clue and look at what Kohan2 did - NOW THATS pre-game options ! ! !
5) No DirectIP support - Enuff said. Ensemble - you suck. This is getting really pathetic that the PC Gaming industry is dropping this. F*ckers! No future-proofing games. So what happens when someday the Online Matchmaking is gone? Noone can play AoE3 on the NET? A*ses.
So this is what the PC Gaming industry is doing: becoming a big overbloated EA -> promise the universe, forego it all 2months before, publishers are dicks, release a half-assed feature-retarded product, rape the customer base of cash as per usual. Great.. downfall of civilization due to focus only on the almighty buck! Rome, here we come.
..And this is just a small example of whats to come - dumbing everything down til we're all global borg.

Nice one thudo - agree with everything you say - games now smack of dumbness - AoE III has no patrols, no waypoints to patrols, no unit behaviour settings, no auto repair or letting a villager patrol in repair mode, idiotic attack move (!) - all RTS game developers need to *study* the awesome wonderfulness of Total Annhilation *End Of*
You wanted a Miracle, I give you the F. B. Eye !!

Sad eh? Feel like a broken record where these PC Gaming companies simply DO NOT UNDERSTAND THEIR PAST but actually regress backwards AS IF they are intentionally "dumbing everything" either to a) cater to more people for whatever will reap more cash b) can't meet publisher's expectations and timelines thus meet Mr. CuttingBoard. Pathetic!
The Router thing sooooo upsets me beyond the pail.
PC GAME COMPANIES - WE THE CUSTOMERS have 85-90% Chance of having a Router in the home! CODE FOR IT! Many of us in the PC are NOT dumb! Support the big names: Linksys, NeatGear, Dlink! (Smart) Routers have been around enmasse since '99. Its not like its something frick'n new.
Anyway, I so laugh at the way PC Gaming (and consoles for that matter) has digressed. How tragic. How typical.
No Passion for the trade. Almost non-existent QA. Cookie-cutter McDigital Games that try to specialize in everything but succeed in nothing. No risk taking - like the music biz, Gunge was the last new genre.. FPSers for the PC.. No one wants to risk capital anymore on a brilliant idea. Its all about $$$$$$$.$$. Thats about it. Downfall of society comes at the sound of a cash register when greed, power, selfishness, MONEY, and laziness take the front seat. Why innovate when you can "assembly line" it?

tried the un-cracked exe(BTW, for all the idiots, you can find the original exe in the first disc), and still, the same, exactly the same.

For Windows 2000 users :
1. Start -> run -> cmd
2. Type: H:\setup.exe /a (where H: is your cd drive)
3. Click next, then the installer will ask for a network path, simply type in the path you want to install the game to
4. Click Install (it seems the program does nothing, but the installation is in progress, takes some minutes)
5. Play !
And yes Total Annihilation is the best and always the best

Seems some of the posts are kiddies wanting "lazergunpewpew" effects. Granted the game isnt what AOE-1 was, definitly not starcraft was. Some of the game elements are bad ideas, some are great ideas. change isnt a bad thing.
But why is it the people that like the game have post like "the game is rather good, has some bad elements, but its enjoyable"...civil and intelligent.
when 90% of the posts that dont like it, such as "OMG! this F**king Gamez SuXORS the big one!!!" or at least along those lines....no stuctive critizism, no facts on why. just that it "SuXORS!" |
I spent a year of studies on american history. It's boring as fuck. Colonial era shit is so fucking boring. As for me being a leet kiddie...well I'm neither leet nor a kiddie. I love AoE2. I like AoM. I don't care for sci-fi RTS, but they can be alot of fun (Ground Control 2, the Earth series). Honestly, all I really play is Rise of Nations from Industrial to Post WW2/Modern. I love hearing the chatter of machine gun fire as opposed to the clanging of swords and shields. I like both to be honest, but there are very few RTS games that capture the world war pre/post industrial era of our history. That's the era AoE3 should have chosen. This era is very sparse civilization wise. It only appeals to a select group of people, mainly americans.
The artwork is drab as hell. Every building and unit looks utter boring hell.
You know what pisses me off? For all the gameplay idea they incorperated from other RTS games, WHERE THE FUCK IS AUTO EXPLORE?!? Ron has it, EE2 has it, EE1 has it. And I don't mean just the scout. Every unit should have an auto-explore.
So fuck you and your kiddie bullshit. Aside from playing around with home city customizations, and playing "AoE the CCG" with this deck of cards bullshit, this game is BORING. It looks boring (hey guys, lets make all the buildings log cabins in a desert map and then make all the interface pop up text YELLOW!). The gameplay is that same old bullshit formulaic RTS build order crap. BLLLAAAH.
So screw you DXWarlock go back to being leet and cool in your stupid boring shit colonial game. While your at it, shove a bayonet up your ass for me. |
see? such hostility for no reason....
you seem to single yourself out as the one i was speaking of, i wasnt.
IF you dont like the game, by all mean dont play it, even complain about it, it deserves it, if you feel that opinion about it.
But calling me a dumbass, and me being "leet and cool" as an insult..was that needed to get your point across that you dislike the game? in turn am i allowed to call you a dumbass and tell you to go play your RTS style you prefer, in some sort of snappy comeback about the setting it uses?
But when the conversation didnt even involve you, and you assume it was directed at you, and lash out as such.......
You dont enjoy the game, you have all rights not to, i was only pointing out the few replies of how people thought it sucked because it lacked the "cool" factor that would make it a game to brag about playing in a high school lunch room, such as doom3,halo,GTA, ect...those are games you could brag to your freinds you bought in HS and gain cred for owning it...AOE3 doesnt have that effect, and a few posts about why its sucks lean towards that reasoning of why it does..
Being able to brag you played a game doesnt make it a good game, or not having enough carnage or coolness to brag about in it doesnt make it a bad game...
It was in no way directed at you. Save your Hostility for someone else...Post your dislikes about the game all you wish, just refrain from directly attacking someone in the proccess, as its totally not related to the game in question.
edit: sorry mods, my last post about it, dont want to drag it into a flamewar or off topic..just had to state my reasons for my first post. and let people know just because you dont like the game, doesnt mean i automaticlly assume you fit my first post)

And what is finally the point of this discussion? Different people like different games? Different people have different tastes? Well....
I have to admit, yes, I like sci-fi and fantasy... movies and books....and so I like these settings in computer games, too...doesnt matter if its RTS or 3D shooter.
But what I do not like in this discussion is this attitude connecting gamers which may like the colonialism/history setting in AoE3 with a more mature/intelligent personality and those which consider this scenario as boring or less engaging as retarded, kiddie-like, primitive...

First impressions... dull and boring. But I expected that, never been much of an AOE fan.. they lack an element of fun. IMO.... Im an RTS fan, AOE just doesnt seem to grab me.
Sticking with it bit longer...

Im having trouble finishing one of the campaign missions in act 1, the "Fountain of youth".
I have completed all of the quests, both primary and secondary (no one with ?-mark left).
Anyone else got this problem?

Elise: The one to the right from the 'scroll lock' key and over the 'page up' key?
Seems like the mission really f*cked up, first I have trouble starting the mission over (it just loades a save when i try to restart), then when I finally get to start the level from scratch, the damn base-wagon wont appear after I capture the cannon.
