I just need to do a simple WP install on one of these... is there a 'best' one (if that makes sense)? I really have no idea about this, usually I use one of my own hosts so I'm out of my element.

If you dont know linux that well I personally would say go with one of the debians or ubuntu's

My personal preference would be the Debian anyway for a simple build.

No.

There isn't and it doesn't make sense either Laughing

Linux itself has little to do with it, it's just the AMP stack. I can point you the most convenient ones though, which would be Debian or preferably for someone new, Ubuntu (which is Debian based).

Consistent file structure, large community and all the shit you could possibly need for WP takes about 5 minutes to install with almost no configuration required (apt-get -y install apache2 php5 mysql-server phpmyadmin and follow the on-screen instructions Razz).

Go with the latest LTS release.

LTS stands for Long Term Support. Releases are supported for five years.
