Some time ago, my bigger monitor for my second pc just died on me..
Now, since a couple of days, my older replacement one is starting to act up:

Sad
I just need it to hold out till around June, when i have money to replace my current main one and use that for the second pc.. If it doesn't, it will be without screen for a couple of months (which is annoying, since some friends use it for gaming while they are here..)
Stupid thing is that i do have another reserve widescreen (only 1400x900, but still), but since i'm borrowing it to a friend (who was gaming on a 13/14 inch CRT before that...) i can't really ask it back..
Why do i have these problems all the time Sad

Why couldn't you ask YOUR monitor back. I mean, if this one breaks completely, it's not your fault.

Just say: hey I'm really sorry but I'm gonna need that monitor back, since I don't have one.
Simple.

You didn't sell it to him, you borrowed it Wink

Because i'm not gonna let a friend play games on a 14inch CRT when the monitor he has only serves as a screen for my second pc.. I rather let him have it.

yeah, i don't get it too.

If you have two monitors, what's the problem ?

If You have just one (the one you're afraid is going to break), and the other one is at your friend`s: IMO it's really more than OK to get whats yours, and what you really need. Unless the friend is poor and really needs it or something.

I have 2 PC's here:

 Spoiler:

The screen on the right has already broken down and i replaced it by my very first TFT now (the one you see in the video), and that one is starting to break down as well now.

Yes he is, even more than me. So i gave him my old AMD quadcore pc and a ~19inch (i think) 1400x900 screen to play on, the only other screen he has is a 14 inch CRT.
As i care a lot about my friends, i'm not gonna take that screen away from him, i can't let a friend play on a shitty CRT..

So this issue is regarding your second PC, the one on the right, but the one on the left, witch I assume is your main one, is fine? Confused

Go buy a cheap one at a second hand store? We used to have TFT's 17'' for 20€ it's not great but it will do the job for a cheap price until you get something else.

Well was thinking of doing that, but for now it still turns on after like 6-7 times trying..
So as long as it still "works", i'm not gonna invest in a cheap second hand one, i just hope it holds out till i buy my new main one Sad

Well my electric bill is already quite huge (€150,- per month), so i don't know if that would be smart Razz

I presume because of the PC's that are 24/7 on Neutral (other than that, there is only a fridge and a freezer that's on 24/7, my tv is off most of the time)
But electricity is rather expensive anyway over here AFAIK.

You have a power drain somewhere, my friend. I pay half what you pay and cook with electricity + two big monitors and a very powerful PC that's on 24/7 + 500 Watt speakers + a fridge + a freezer + a large TV + lots of appliances = €80 a month.

Buy one of those power monitors you can get from Aldi now and then to check how much every appliance uses.

It's possible your freezer or fridge soak power like crazy. People need to realise it's a lot cheaper to buy a new fridge than it is to use an old one that eats power like fuck.

My LCD leaks 2W in standby.

And how the fuck can you be paying 150 Euro monthly for electricity? My family pays 50 at most, and it's already a lot, being pretty much wastefull and leaving appliances on when they shouldn't be.

Like red said, there may be something wrong... And do you really need a freezer? Maybe you could start saving money on those details, I mean, start to track and write down where your money is going, I'm sure you can save quite a bit and it would certainly avoid you a lot of problems in the future.

Friend of mine who has as well only a freezer and fridge, but only 1 pc which he turns off if he's not behind is, and pays around €30,- lesser.
So my 3 PC's being on 24/7 might actually make up for the €30,- difference.

Like i said, electricity is expensive here. There is NO point comparing it to your own prices Wink

if you have some knowledge of electronics, you can try to fix it yourself.

open it, and on the "motherboard" (usually are 2 boards, and those faulty capacitors are not on the one with the power source) you will see some broken capacitor.
inflated ones.
http://jimmyauw.com/2006/08/29/overweight-capacitor-serious-problem-with-simple-answer/

just replace them, and you will be good to go for another 6+ months.

after you repeat this for 2-3 times, it will be gone for good, but you can usually make it work for at least another year.
mark everything you unplug, take care of the large cable from the panel to board (the connection is easy to break), and you should be fine Smile.
but dont do this if you never done some electronics work before. to easy to screw up things.

You could probably take it to a service and diagnost it and see how much it would cost to fix it. You might get away with a few euros. From the looks of it, it might be some resistor issue or probably loose wiring connection...

You live in the Netherlands, not fucking Dubai - you pay the same prices (more or less) than us Belgians do for energy - do you seriously think you pay twice as much? Trust me - something is not right. Something in your apartment is eating energy like crazy. Unless they added heating to the bill, of course.

My PC is currently using 130-150 watts while just browsing the web. That's like £0.02 per hour (13.534p per kWh). I also pay a standing charge (£0.26 per day) but that doesn't change the price I pay to run my PC. That doesn't include the 50 watts my monitor uses when on though, but if your PC's are idle the monitors will be in standby.

I wish i could do such stuff, but i most likely screw it up completely. I'll try that once it fully breaks down (IF it can even be saved with doing that at that point.)

if it breaks completely, usually it means that an ic is fried because of faulty capacitors, and is pretty much dead. nothing to do at that time.
replacing faulty capacitors -> 1-5$, you can do it yourself.
diagnosing and replacing a ic -> usually between 30%-50% price of the monitor (you dont have the tools to do it). and you have no guarantee that it will work after. and you have to replace capacitors anyway, knowing that in 1 year will be dead again. not worth it.

The funny thing is that people often sell electronics as faulty due to capacitors fucking up, when it's often the PSU that's the problem. Managed to get a few working graphic cards this way off ebay Laughing
