An alternative to sabnzbd you mean. Sickbeard relies on other download clients as I understand it.
I do have nzbget sneakily at my work pc though, a simple commandline nzbget linuxiso.nzb downloads stuff fine, no need for a service running. It recently got a webinterface too, so I can recommend it as a sabnzbd replacement. Haven't used it extensivly with any backup servers or couchpotato/sickbeard/nzbdrone, so take that with a grain of salt.
Only downside is it does not integrate with newznab as nicely so I have to use the cart, but thats a minor quibble.
I would highly recommend it.
I have a couple of issues with it, and I think sabnzbd is more refined in some areas but I find it better for my needs.

It usually succeeds deciphering them correctly. The problem is, when it's an entire season it derps out, extracts one episode and then removes all PAR files for the rest of the episodes. It's clearly a bug.
