Fibre isn't rising at all. National coverage is still shite and the cable network is 98% fibre anyway. It's just not FttH, but that's not necessary (yet). Plenty of room to grow still.

I'd be surprised if fibre is available before 2020 where I live; it's been only a couple of years since KPN have pushed DSL beyond 20 Mbps.

Well you can't deny it's on the rise, it went from almost 0 to like 40% of so of the country, a rise is a rise no matter how much Wink
But you can't really compare shit to where you and i live, we live in shit holes that aren't really worth the investment money for the gov/companies.
(Perfect example what's happening down here, centrum and surrounding house blocks get fibre, yet they flat out refuse to pull the cable 150-200 meter further so i have it as well..

And don't get me started about DSL, i hope it dies out, it's a fucking piece of trash connection. (50mbit here could get only max 17mbit Laughing)

40%? Where are you getting that from? It's 5% at most. I'm talking about area, not connections.

It's 40% of homes maybe, but I even doubt that.

And no, we don't live in shitholes. We just live outside what KPN considers to be important, unlike Ziggo (and before that, Essent/@Home/etc). You and I have both had the speed increases on Ziggo first. The infrastructure here is in fact ridiculously good; you do realise that it's been fibre here since the late 90's right? It's just that KPN are not willing to invest down here. And the other providers will only invest where they make most profit first (which is fully understandable, since they need to make money before they can invest).

KPN's infrastructure mostly dates back to the 70's and 80's, they've invested very little in the last 25 years - especially after it got privatised.

(yeah that number was my estimate)
1.6 million households is the only number i can find.
Average 2.2 person per household. 16.8 million people = 7.6 million households = 21% of the households within 1.5 year.
Still not a bad number.

1.5 years? Try 3-4 Laughing

They started the first (ridiculously expensive) FttH connections some 8 or 9 years ago already mate. 3 years ago there were plenty of towns where you could get Fibre at current prices already. Nuenen for example has been at the forefront, back in 2005 their trial ended already Wink

I'm talking about the proper rising, not the few test cases.. When the actual plan to give the whole country fibre actually kicked off.
Yeah sure some cities had fibre, but that was pure for testing purposes.. Hell that's why they got a years worth of products for pisstake price.

Yeah, that started in 2006/2007 already. Amsterdam's been "getting" it since then and they still haven't covered the whole city 7/8 years later. Most of the tests ended around 2005 and not long after is when the rollout started at a larger scale.

Really saus, it's nowhere *near* as quick as you think it is. It's been 3-4 years that they've been taking "initiative" requests (i.e. if enough people in a town want it, Reggefiber -which is KPN, for the record- and others will move that town up the chain). But the roll-out has been going on for much longer.

Reason it's going so slow is exactly what I said earlier: most of the existing KPN network dates back 30-40 years. So everywhere they want to do fibre, they need to dig everything up to replace it. That requires money, manpower and approval from the municipality.

We may be one of the few countries where it is being rolled out actively, that doesn't mean it's going fast.
