EXCLUSIVE: Thief patch date confirmed, Mantle and TrueAudio incoming

AMD, Nixxes, and Eidos-Montreal have been working on implementing Mantle and TrueAudio support in the PC version of Thief for some time now, and it's finally coming to fruition: AMD and Eidos-Montreal have confirmed to us the patch enabling these features will go live Tuesday, March 18.

For those unfamiliar, Mantle is an API that offers higher framerates and lower frame time latency thanks to its programmer-friendly low-impact design; TrueAudio improves audio depth while reducing load on your CPU and RAM. You can find out more about the latter here.

I'll have much more information to share on Mantle and TrueAudio in Thief soon when our upcoming testing article goes live. In the meantime, check out our tech review if you haven't yet.

A new AMD driver is supposed to be released next week as well, so I guess those will coincide.

I am curious about TrueAudio, but I wonder if it will work fine, considering that there are some weird audio issues with the game at the moment, from what I heard Very Happy

I thought the game would get better after the first chapters. Got slapped by a giant NOPE. It did not improve at all, on the contrary.. Sad

Gameplay limitations/shortcomings aside, if we exclude some glimmers of decent-ish level design like the Asylum or the Baron's Mansion (only the initial sections though), the whole cinematic ride was a complete trainwreck of epic proportions.

Instead of giving the player more freedom and sense of accomplishment, with each mission the game progressively amplified the amount of scripted scenes and corridors, also adding 'unforgettable' pressSPACEtoAwesome escape sequences Bay-style with slow-mo, fire & explosions, and last but not least, two nonsensical boss battles just to say the definitive fuck you to all the fans. Nobody asked for this Okay

And as if putting so much emphasis on narrative elements and hand-holding in a Thief game wasn't enough, they decided to hire the worst writer available on the market, capable of building up a story as engaging as staring at a wall. And I'm not exaggerating..the whole final chapter + ending literally disgusted me. Mad Laughing

If I had to rate this game, I guess it would be a (generous) ~5/10, just because of the pretty views/clean graphics and because of those very rare moments where I didn't feel like a puppet on a string. What a gigantic wasted opportunity..

So, Mantle was released in latest beta.

Anyone care to test and report +5677 magical FPS?

The drivers now support Mantle in Thief but Thief itself also need to be updated to include Mantle support. Smile

As there is currently no software hooking into Mantle there's also no way to measure framerate unless a FPS counter has also been added, once the code for Mantle becomes available existing utilities like Fraps and so on can likely be updated to support the API properly. Smile

Still the game runs at 59/60 in all but the most demanding scenarios so I'm not expecting Mantle to help much at all if you have a strong CPU and dedicated GPU though if you use a APU or a weaker CPU it might help although this is UE3 and not too demanding to begin with.
(Unlike say Frostbite.)

The game was updated. Smile

EDIT: Now the game launcher has a new setting called "Automatically limit texture resolution" with either Default, On or Off, I set it to off.

EDIT: And Mantle can be toggled.

EDIT: Benchmark with Mantle on.

And off.

(Keep in mind that AMD currently hasn't fully optimized / added support for GCN 1.0 meaning the R280 / 7970 and below.)

x64 version.

Just grabbed the update and ran the benchmark

pretty nice improvements, especially at 1920x1080.
I assume at 1440p my gpu is too busy so overhead reduction for the cpu doesn't help nearly as much anymore.

Well like I said GCN 1.0 is not fully supported, instead look at the +40 FPS maximum in the above post from the 290 GPU which is supported. Smile
(Even a nice +10 FPS to minimum.)

EDIT: I believe a AMD representative posted on Twitter claiming the WHQL driver (2-4 weeks) would add support for them, along with Enduro which people have been asking about since December or so.

EDIT: Still, free performance gains. Smile

My point is, JB, it is obviously not as spectacular as all this PR crap sounded.
Which was expected.

So in the end - nothing changes on this field for now. And my next purchase will be nvidia again Razz

Heh well I know, both AMD and Nvidia tend to over hype some of their features after all, now with these most recent announcements I'm waiting to see how DirectX 12 (Or OpenGL 5?) will perform, perhaps Mantle could indeed be phased out during 2015 - 2016 if DX12 does what it promises and if adaption to the API is quick enough. Smile
(After all it's better to have a unified API that both AMD and Nvidia can make use of, like DirectX or OpenGL though DX will probably be the more popular alternative as usual.)

I don't expect Mantle to go anywhere in a hurry though, albeit I also don't see many developers hurrying to utilize it short of being supported by AMD directly or using a game engine with support already in place such as Frostbite and EA/Dice promoting it in all the games using that engine. Smile

EDIT: Still Mantle is currently in development and could change further, plus so far it's been like early DX10 games where support was added in as a addition instead of being designed around the new API to begin with (Although with Mantle exclusive to AMD I don't see that happening anytime soon either.) so for now there's limited gains although a free performance gain is still nice.

EDIT: Oh and yeah basing a hardware purchase on just it's exclusive features is impractical, personally I mostly use AMD GPU's just because they're cheaper and offer comparable performance, however for CPU's the gap between AMD and Intel is currently too big.
(I'll have to try Nvidia again eventually, the GeForce 6600 was my last NV GPU so it's been a few years.)

Saying that nothing changes is silly. If this was a DX update, it would be huge news.

Anyhow, here are my results, with a 290@1100...
Settings: Everything maxed out, 1080p, FXAA - Off, SSAA - Low, Texture limits - Off.
DX11:

Mantle:

Min FPS is hard to trust with benchmarks like that - one hiccup and down it goes. I wish they would save the frames so we could plot them.
Either way, that's at least a 15 FPS increase by all metrics and still doesn't quite paint a proper picture.

In the very first segment of the benchmark (around 10 secs or so), on DX11 it's running at 40-50 FPS.
On Mantle it's 75-85 - that is easily a 40 FPS boost.

Also GPU usage under DX11 was unstable, often dropping due to bottlenecks. No such issue under Mantle, although that part was expected.

Say what you want, but if such result can be achieved by a better API, I'll take it gladly. Here's hoping we can see something similar with that new DX, if not with wider adoption of Mantle.

That's a big issue isn't it? Having DirectX 12 being exclusive to the upcoming Windows OS in addition to requiring new hardware for full support, though Windows 8 migration has been pretty slow and I don't see MS porting DX12 to W7 either so I guess it makes little difference?
(Nothing announced yet though, we'll have to wait for further details to become available.)

Mantle has a similar challenge of course being currently exclusive to AMD GPU's but it works on Vista to 8.1 since it's part of the display drivers.
(Though AMD is being slow with adding support to the older GCN model GPU's and there's probably other issues to work out as well since it's still a very young API.)

Well, so far, even if took some time, newer DX versions were still eventually adopted. And we had people installing the hated W8 because it was said that BF4 runs better on it... I think given enough incentive things will get moving Smile

I suppose it's true enough that not much is changed now, given how we are still at the infancy of it all. People who upgrade very rarely, don't have too many reasons to pick a side right now, unless they are interested in a specific game(s)... And for those who upgrade often, it doesn't even matter, since they can switch at any time Very Happy

But at least we get some nice peeks at what's possible, and there are more games coming with Mantle support, so it's something to consider.
