Also don't use photoshop for vector based shapes. Illustrator is much efficient for that

If I have to do a logo or something that need to be scaled up or down I use Illustrator. Vector tool in PS has it uses but it has problems when it comes to more complicated things.
But I have to admit that after getting familiar with PS user interface, you have to use Illustrator it's total clusterfuck. Why one developer can't standarize controls and functions between software with similiar purpose.
I always have to get used to Illustrator after short time of not using it.

I don't get it why illustrator is as complicated as gimp in usage.

What sort of complicated things? |
Doing larger things for example, the path itself is vector but the filling or stroking with brush will be raster. The edges won't be smooth. I usually use it when I have to cut something out or mess with typography. Or have to do some shitty abstract background.
But I might not know something, I'm no pro, I play around with graphic in my free time, usually when someone would force me because I'm a lazy ass.

I don't find Illustrator hard to use. Actually it's rather simple. The thing that was stupid for me was that the shortcuts in Fireworks is totally different than those in PS or Illustrator (ctrl for zoom, srsly?).

I know photoshop and can't even change color of my brush in Illustrator, I pick red and it switches to black every time

Is blender usable and stable nowadays? And does it have a renderer with GI and support for hdri image based lighting?

Blender rocks, although it semi-rocks for me you really need NVIDIA and CUDA if you have ATI you can only use the cpu.

Guess I'll stay with C4D then, it works fast, is easy to use and the render results look great.

Illustrator IS the thing for vector based design but I HATE the f'n piece of crap. I sat for a week trying to get into it when I worked at a media company 2 years ago but said "f*** it" and went back to Photoshop and used the limited vector tool instead, optionally creating a 1:1 scale image/layer, then turning it into a vector object.

the two pieces of software should just be merged
i think it's silly that photoshop is still pixel based destructive editing
every brush stroke should just be a vector for brush effect and in an image the original imported resource should be recoverable from under the modify stack
this is what i love in after effects and node based editing software so much
and illustrator in a limited way

I also like how they have (had) Fireworks, Illustrator, Flash, Photoshop and Indesign... all capable of doing the same thing but in 4 different ways where there isn't much consistency
It was also nice of them to kill off Fireworks without putting the good features of it into something like Photoshop |
What is it that is so hard to fathom? Just by understanding the advantages of detailed vectors you should get why Illustrator is a more powerful tool for it.
Infinitely scalable, detailed logotypes with shaders that take up like, what? 40KB? Working with stuff like that when layouting is just awesome.
Or detailed vector portraits, there just AREN'T any tools available in Photoshop that can do something like this with VECTORS.
Again, that is a vector object, I could scale it to fit on a 100x100m wall without quality loss, and without impact in filesize or having to use umpty-millions of RAM while doing it.
Or how about brush paths that (again) scale infinitely, the bitmap brush tools you either are stuck working at specific pixel dimensions, and if you don't have the brush size set required for the work you are doing, you have to remake that set for that size (or have a huge set that you downsize, unfortunately though scaling down bitmaps can come with severe disadvantages).
It goes without saying that Photoshop is the industry standard in bitmap editing, but for vectors it is severely lacking. Just simply being able to control the shapes and points, and scale with applied gradients or details, or just choosing another stroke-type for the effect you're after makes Illustrator usable in its own right.
Now do the above in photoshop, and scale it up or down by 100% and DON'T fuck up the antialiasing.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

any retouching you would do in photoshop is just instantly rasterized input vectors
the original input vector could easily be preserved
see after effects, which does this

Yeah, if you are going to make 5 strokes that might be feasible, I doubt though this will in anyway be useful if you are going to touch up a really complex photo

OK,
Can someone with actual experience give their input instead, please?

"Yes you can draw using vectors in Photoshop. But you can not save (or export) a true vector file from Photoshop. Have you checked those exports? Much like exporting to Illustrator - they are vector containers with raster fills. That's not a true vector file. The best you can do is draw vectors in Photoshop, then export the paths and use some other true vector application to add fills and strokes. I understand people really want Photoshop to create vector files, but the truth is that Photoshop simply does not."

When working with logos I can assure you, nothing beats illustrator. I had a pdf of a logo for a company I'm doing some stuff for. No vector, but you can open pdf in illustrator, and you'll have a vector you can manipulate.
Now I pasted that into ps as a smart object, scaled it down to needed size, and it was still blurry.
So now I'll just do everything in illustrator, and just export it there for web...

Alright, looking into the vector tools in CC, they're quite decent.
I still prefer to use Illustrator for vectors because I know how to use the tools for making vectors better there.
