Yeah, sadly I agree too with that "critique". I had no idea what the game was missing when I started playing. But... something was off indeed.

Haven't progressed too far, but even the start area isn't as memorable as the one from DS1.

I haven't started yet, but I do expect its gonna be more approachable then playing ds 1 for the first time.

Seems logical considering that its become one of the mainstream staples of "hardcore gamer" oriented games.

What a HUGE HUGE letdown this game is.

DS1, while a poor port from the consoles, was infinitely better than this pile of console crap.

The graphics. I can see why they're locked to 60fps, otherwise they could probably reach 200+ on most modern systems. Please feel free to point out to me if I am largely mistaken, but I see nothing particularly GOOD about them. I mean sure, they show your repeated and inevitable demise well enough, but I'm not seeing anything that would make me go 'Ohh that's good' - unlike those wonderful 'alpha' versions we saw.

Only reason I can think of is so the new Uber-consoles could show this in 60fps happyvision - no need to worry if the PC can handle it; if it's good enough for conderps, its good enough for PC elitists...

But besides the graphics... it's just such a totally un-fun bitch to play. Maybe it's just me, but I don't really find 2-hit deaths much fun. And I'm talking about the very first 'proper' combat, against those large knight-things... I felt quite the accomplishment when I eventually killed the first one - only to be met by another with a huge mace. Then another. And another 3. And another 2.

Eventually I just thought 'Fuck this', after my (ugly) redhaired knight turned into a Thriller reject. Even after using the effergies, combat was clunky, hopelessly unresponsive, and well, not fun. And when I finally managed to flee into another building... then there was some Dragon Knight - with an even bigger weapon swung around like it was made from balsa wood. And I died. And found myself having to do the WHOLE THING AGAIN.

I turned it off at this point.

Now, please, don't get me wrong. I love a game with challenge. Games that make you think, how to figure out a tough opponent, pulling it off and feeling that sweet sense of accomplishment are few and far between in this world.

For me, DS2 is not one of those games.

It's almost as if the developers wondered how they could make a game such as DS1 MORE challenging... but more 'up to date'.

In my experience, I think i've only ever played one other game with as much frustration and disappointment in the game and graphics.

That game was E.T on the Atari...

And can't you see the stats of an item (like protection values of armor/shields or item weight) if you put it in/out of the item box? Surprised
You could see that in DS1, very strange

yep you can see all that

Gah, I've been replaying God Hand and now my dodging is all off because the two games use different buttons for that. Normally adapting to different games isn't an issue but God Hand is a special beast. Your fingers start to act on their own after a while. Now I'm getting pummeled by easy shit in Dark Souls 2.

I think I need to finish one at a time. Maybe it's because I've gotten older but I can't casually pick up and play hard games like these anymore. I need to play it consistently otherwise I become terrible.

I dunno.

the hardcore gaming market is large enough by now to have mainstream entries.

Dark souls 2 is received by the public in a far brighter spotlight then any of the previous entries in the series.

we need something fresh to be the new hardcore Razz

Protip: use a mace. You can kill the big knights in 3-4 hits.

And strike weapons are probably the best in DS2 overall.

Those Knights in Heide's Tower of Flame? Thats actually not the first area i would go to after Majula, Forest of Fallen Giants is the first area you are supposed to go it's way easier and should give you a good boost in gear and stats.
It's similar to the first game a lot of ppl endet up in undead crypt instead of Burg in their first playtrough Very Happy

I went there first and found the knights to be fairly easy to dispatch(as a knight).

I Circled around and hit them in the back, occasionally they do an attack that seems to hit you even when you're behind them( Laughing ), that's when I rolled back to safety and waited for the combo to start over.

I went there and killed all 9 knights, plus Dragonrider(another fairly easy boss) and earned around 23,000 souls if I'm not mistaken.

I found low level enemies to be much more annoying than those giant knights and bosses I encountered so far, go figure.

It's a bit drawn out, but you can roflpwn them.

I mostly agree (graphics seems fine to me with durante tweaks), it is so easy to die in this game and penalty for dying is huge as well.

It is already hard enough not to die but your weapons also degrade very quickly and when that happens if you are in the middle of a very dangerous section (quite probably you will) without a safe passage back to nearest bonfire you're done for. I know there is a bone that can take you to the last bonfire but it is not an unlimited item so not that useful.

Even that forest section gets pretty hard after it's initial section and navigation there is especially tricky with game's jumping being so clunky. I don't remember how many times I died by falling.

In summary like he said this game is ridiculously hard, I am not sure I'll be able to continue playing it without a trainer that makes human effigies unlimited which essentially removes some of the death penalty.

Any pointers to make this beginning section easier will be appreciated and yes I am not playing this hitting like crazy without thinking, clearly that doesn't work Smile

tldr: waaah game is too hard waaaah.

You want better graphics? Downsample from 7560 rez and tell me it looks like shit. In fact, post a pic so I can laugh in your face.

The game is based around tactics, don't say it's not. Have you tried playing with a controller? Combat is fluid as shit.

Starting class doesn't mean much, apart from starting stats. Depending on where you spend your points you can pretty much do whatever you want afterwards.

Both the tv and projector are hdmi into receiver then out. I'm using nvid 680 gpu.

Anyway I also laugh at retarded holdouts on games like this who refuse to just get a god damn controller. I mean jesus already cheap bastards.

ALso agree with the weapon decay and needing repair is bullshit. I bought an item and 10 minutes later if that it was already telling me it was ready to break, WTF. But I did wonder off into the area that was harder and wasn't really meant for first fight, so off to the garden place or whatever its called try my luck.
