well if they make the game in 2D it's not going to be apealing for someone who never played the Civ series. i can just imagine some of my friends going into the store and looking at the 2D screenshots going "wth is this? are they back in the 90s?"
i doubt if any publisher wants to publish a 2D game nowadays. they probably can and would make the game in 2D, but then they would loose alot more new to-be fans to the game because some peple wont even look at a 2D game.

2d vs 3d debate.
While I'm not a programmer nor do I have any programming knowledge, I think I have a theory on why they moved to 3d this time.
While I agree that 3d is generally not needed, when you start to add more graphical detail to a game (ie, bridges, aquaducts, cities with ports that face the ocean etc) wouldn't it be easier to model these images once in 3d instead of hiring multiple graphic artics to create them in 2d?
I would think so. As graphical detail increases the graphical artists job get's very very busy to keep up with all the different angles needed for their 2d models. Instead of making 1 bridge in 3d, they must make 6 bridges with differing viewpoints. Talk about a hastle! and therefore you have much easier programming for 3d than 2d.
Also, 3d units will move in their corresponding directions. I always hate when my f-15 flew backwards and my cavarly looked like a scene from Monty Python trying to attack a city with thier asses. Maybe they didn't want to get flanked?
While their are many benifits to 2d, I think many of you fail to see the benifits of 3d. For myself, they make for a much more immersive game.
Anyways, just my opinion.

Few games manages to make good use of the 3D engine, but from the look (and from previews) it seems like they managed to pull it off in Civ IV
When I complain about games in 3D it's mostly directed to games created by poor companies, because most (if not all) of those games doesn't use what a 3D engine can do, which always ends up with a more buggy and uglier game than if the same game would have been done in 2D
Just look at Children of the Nile, a game that came out years after Pharao (and from the same team), but IMHO it looks worse than Pharao, and from what I've heard about the game the move to 3D didn't give any benefits to the player. For a game like that 2D would have been a much better choice (2D would in this case be easier to make than 3D)

those SS's are zoomed up typically at a lower resolution for web purposes only. ISO news guy has a review copy (supposdily) and he didnt like the graphics when he saw the SS but when he played it he said its a really nice presentation of everything on screen. Keep in mind also, alot of those SS are zoomed in quite a bit, you can zoom out and play it normally also. Dont know about you guys but I played the original civ till i couldnt keep my eyes open, the game was great. Civ 2 came out and I played that to no end as I did also with Civ 3, though all the settlers towards the end of the game always made the game drag on. Also at civfanatics.com the preview stated that the guy ran a civ 4 combat analyzer and ran 1000 tests versus a spearman and a tank, anx the tank one everyone. Also knights vs a spearman only won like 2/10 times so the reviewer says the combat system is overhauled quite a bit. No more stacks of doom ethier. Seriously go check out the preview from civfanatics, they are awsome. Cant wait! Already got my copy pre ordered along with my buddy and were going to play it till we drop. CIV series is one of those few series that holds together through time. Support fraxis on this one.

As long as you can zoom out more I'll be happy.
Also that's great new about the tank. The devs really did a good job of finding everything annoying about the series and fixing it. Even if it was poor graphics I think this would be the best Civ game to date.

They don't mention graphics in the previews though IIRC, because it's been mentioned so many times already
Tomorrow the 3rd part of his preview will go online (same link)

Neither its there own engine. Souce or the D3 engine would suck at strategy games.

watched some low rez videos and even more psyched for the game. part of me hates the fact that firaxis is letting so little out about the game, but part of me loves em for it. unlike other games where we get bombasted with screenshots and videos and hype galore they are just like shut up and wait, youll love it. heh. civs my crack and sids my dealer.
