In DS1, you *can* parry as soon as the attack animation starts, so that's after the start up; i.e. for most of the skeletons they raise their sword above their head first and as soon as they're done with that and start moving it back down to hit you, you can parry.
Here's a good example of what I mean:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=1hrh94Dc-h0#t=300
First parry he does quite late, second parry he hits the button right after the incoming attack starts
Quote: | The attack will hit you in 20 frames. Your weapon has a parry start up time of 10 frames. So when the attack is 10 frames into the attack, that's when you parry. Because by the time it hits you, your parry just finished the start up frames and will be entering recovery frames after the "hit" window is over. That transition between start up and recovery is the parry window for your weapon / shield. Something like a buckler will have a bigger window, which might mean it overlaps with start up and recovery? I'm not sure about that. |
I know all this
The point is that the window is much shorter than in DS1, you can only successfully parry an attack during the last few frames when it's just about to hit you, whereas in DS1 like I said and shown in the video above, the timing is a bit looser and less dependent on what you're parrying *with*. It looks better and it certainly is more realistic than in DS1 (again, see video above for the nonsense ), but then they should've also taken out the ridiculous "pretty" parry animation for some weapons, which a real fighter would never do.
It's just very annoying to do with a scimitar or something similar. They have (in comparison) very long startups compared to a shield and I'm guessing, the parrying dagger.
And yeah, I'm sure they did it for PvP.

i like the design choice though, it forces you to learn the timings for every weapon in the game inside out, making successful parrying a true masterclass instead of something everyone could do with a bit of practice.
definitely gonna make pvp more interesting.

M<y thoughts on pad versus kb/mouse - if I wanted to use a controller then I would buy a console game...nuff said. After all, how many console users would switch to a kb/mouse if it made some of their Xbox PS4 games better?

we ve had gamepads and joysticks on pc and amiga since the beginning, i dont understand why nowadays people shun controllers so much and create all of this stupid drama.
back in the 90s i used kb+mouse for most pc games, but gamepad for fighting and racing games and my logitech wingman stick for space and flight simulators.
the beauty of the pc is being able to use pretty much everything.

Because this is not a game that should require a controller. "Diamond in the rough" bullshit should not fly with people but there you go "controls are perfect ... and shitty on kb".
As long as durrpas excuse these, especially with lazy japcrap derpelors, things will never change. "We are lucky japan is making for PC" - no, not really, they can keep their crap to themselves and their garbage consoles.

being one of the best rpg series in the last decade, even if i had to play it with a ddr mat, i would do so rather than play shit like dragon age 2 or mass effect 3, or whatever else tries to pass as an rpg nowadays, with kb+mouse.

I remember most C64 games needed a joystick/pad, it wouldn't let you use the keyboard like on the Speccy, mostly because early models didn't have a port for them, that was the 80s.
Still need to install this, it only arrived on Friday, need to clear some space first.
