To be fair, New Releases is pointless now. There's so much stuff being released every day, it needs to list the 20 latest items to be even vaguely useful. And it's even worse if you have the "Show DLC" box ticked.

Blame publishers, not Valve. No, I mean, seriously - Tweet/Facebook/email RPS and name-and-shame publishers who do this. There's enough pro-consumer journos who'll spread the word. Things won't change straight away, but they won't ever change if you just blame Valve, instead of the pubs/devs who do this.

oh not you too!

stop saying valve is some blameless innocent child being beaten up by the big boys... its THEIR system, things only happen on it the way they do because valve wants it to. yes, publishers set prices, but ONLY within the bounds that valve dictates, and ONLY because valves wants it this way....

its valve who supports regional pricing. its valve that supports $=euro, its valve that supports regional release dates. make no mistake about it, valve is a profit driven ruthless business, not a friend who luvz all gamrz!!11

valve is essentially what EA would be if EA learned what consumer relations was, and shot 70% of their support staff and told the remaining 30% to be more shit.

Yeah, Valve supports all that. But, to me, it's like complaining about the ingredients in food to the supermarket. The supermarket supports what's in the food, because it keeps the producers happy, and it doesn't care. But make your displeasure at the ingredients known to the producers themselves, and the producers are no longer perfectly happy. They see discontent, and have the ability to step up and change things.

(Possibly not a perfect analogy... it's early, and not had my coffee yet. )

My point is that Valve will do stuff that nets them money, but will never care about pricing that much, because they have the perfect way to ignore all complaints. Complain about/to the people who can change the system.

As far as I know, Valve have never said a game has to be X amount of money, though they may do and it's not well publicised. Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone) has said that GOG did that with TWA, so anything is possible.

It's a shitty default setting in a a system that needs an update that's how far I would blame Valve with this.

Publishers seem to care enough to change the 'cheaper' region values, but when it's the more expensive regions all of a sudden it's "woah woah, that is valve's fault!"

Their explanation really doesn't make sense, or are we willing to believe that 90% of them are clueless? Good business running then

(That being said, enough things left to criticize Valve tho, especially these later years )

Reading the Gaf Steam thread, came across this regarding Steam Preorder Refunds:

Quote:
The automatic refund option also works for retail keys. In hindsight I should have had my Broken Age backer key refunded and put the money towards the cost of the game + OST bundle, but at the time I thought DF was going to come through with the "solution" it was exploring instead of just initiating radio silence.

Presumably it refunds the cost of the game as it is on Steam. Which means it might be possible to make a profit on pre-order refunds: preorder the game on GMG/Nuuvem/etc; register it on Steam; then automatic refund for the cost of the game into Steam Wallet funds. Though this relies on getting a preorder key before it's unlocked on Steam.

I would also guess that (if this is indeed possible), Valve will keep a record of refunds, and possibly question those who abuse the system.

Note: This is just me guessing, based on the Gaf comment. Don't take my word for it. Smile

I thought the refund thing only works once (per account, as a goodwill gesture), so not really something you can exploit for a fiendish plan or anything Razz

You can get a refund of a preorder anytime when you enter your account page on Steam, there's a separate button now.

Valve gives you red card only once. If you did actually abuse the system they will disable all functions of your account (except ability to play games) until you contact them. Then they will remove lock warning you that you should not do it again ever. If you do something suspicious - next time lock won't be lifted and they will never respond to your inquiries.

So good luck with that :P
