Just thought I'd mention this because a few people said it didn't work. I read through the various threads and got the info I needed to get Quake 4 up and running. Here's what I did.
1. I opened notepad, located the host file, and added this line to the host file: 127.0.0.1 q4master.idsoftware.com
2. I installed the game ( and pulled the plug on my internet connection prior to putting the cd key in, just for good measure)
3. I copied over the quake4.exe from the vaseline file and replaced the quake4.exe in my Q4 install folder.
4. I went into the game and enabled punkbuster.
5. While still offline, I tested the MP by clicking 'create server' ( didn't bother with settings, left them as they are) and ran around a map for a few minutes. No problems ( 800 x 600 high quality settings but quite a few options off due to my less than leet system).
6. I then reconnected my internet connection.
7. I tried both a non pb server and a pb server. In both cases, it awaited connection for a few seconds and then I was in.
So far, no problems encountered.
My thanks to Vaseline for the patch , CloneCD for the file, and everyone else here who shared the relevant info for this game.

heres the thing, i did everything the info said and quake4 runs great but when i go to mp i see no games on-line any ideas?
127.0.0.1 idnet.ua-corp.com
127.0.0.1 q4master.idsoftware.com
both of these in host file like it says on other posts

Forgive the NOOB question but where do I find the host file?
I can find loads of servers in the browser but when I attempt to connect it hangs at the authorisation stage for 10 minutes or so.

Hmm, not sure GOG427, but certainly the second line is the one to use, not the ua-corp one.

Open notepad, then go to File/ Open/WiINDOWS/ System 32/Drivers/ etc
In the etc folder, there should be a host file. When I did it, it opened a sample host file. I added the line, and it said can't save because of something or other, but in fact it did save by creating a new hosts.txt file.

Dosen´t work for me, it just stays at the authorisation screen when im trying to connect to a server..

every time we try it Id log our IP again too. nice.

Thats becouse you blocked the master qry server in your host file.
I wonder if we can connect over an external server browser oO

didn't work when i changed my host settings. But did when I took them out, still takes an age to join a server tho

This was fixed i think... i know few who got banned by punk buster (including myself) reason was "illegal key/guid" or something like that

I tryed as orgianl post stated and IT WORKS,...
PLayed a few games and had no problems
Thx to all that get games and info out to the masses

if i add 127.0.0.1 q4master.idsoftware.com to my hosts file i can no longer get a server list... which makes sense... if i take it out i can get a server list up and when i try and join i just get stuck at waiting for authorisation screen.

id logs your ip but no fake information cause none is sended neither nick or clantag nor fake-cdkey therefore there is no evidence against you.. so let em log what they want
they will log more info with the original then they ever will with vsl patch
and for the guy with "client unknown to auth" thats smth about config stuff dunno much more but deleting my q4config.cfg and let q4 rewrite it worked..
also for the punkbuser note there were a few ppl playing with banned keys already so they got banend at pb chenge key and retry it will work..

I do have PB turned off.. plenty of servers w/o PB.. Plus I had a friend that couldnt get it to connect but he forgot he had turned his FW to deny Q4 w/o askin. Once he let it access the net he was playin online

I can enter ONLY to non-dedicated servers. When I try a dedicated server the program stays in "Waiting for autorization" and nothing else happens.
Does this happens to anyone else?
