For me it is the new cryengine. |
Fuck. No.
Idtech 5 May have the texture streaming issues but at least it always feels very fluid. Cryengine is anything but that.
And frankly I'd refuse to buy any wolf/doom/quake labled game that didn't use an id engine out of principal. Although now that Carmack is gone it will likely happen.

Agree. The gunplay in any cry engine powered game is terrible.

RAGE ran pretty poorly on my 6850 and is one of the reasons why i won't even bother DL this.
And from what I've seen the issues with AMD GPU's keep happening with this one for some people.
I'll take any Cryengine over tech5 any day of the week.

Isn't that a issue with forced triple buffering on Nvidia hardware?

Think i tried disabling that from the nvidia control panel with no luck. Perhaps i should try again to be sure though.

Cryengine is shite when it comes to twitch fps style gameplay. Idtech may have issues but it's fluid and runs fast. And personally both RAGE and this game I've had zero issues even at release. Of course that's why I tend to buy nvidia for my gaming rigs.
Only game in the past 20 years I've ever had driver issues with on nvidia hardware was farcry. I've had problems with both concerning dual gpu which is why I never go multi gpu anymore. I value my time and I just want shit to work. Every id game since the dawn of man has had issues on ati hardware and given my fanboy loyalty for anything id it's why I prefer nvidia.

Ha! This is why the architectural design feels so familiar at times. Had more than a couple of deja-vu moments when wandering around the prison(s).

Yeah I'm dreading finishing this game because it really is that good.
Makes me wish they would make a modern take on Enemy Territory using the assets of this game.

I have to admit, the game is growing on me with each new chapter. It just keeps improving after a very lazy start. The story and the characters are very compelling, feels so good to be B.J Blazkowicz going against the Nazis. Also, I have to agree that despite the shitty engine chosen, the visuals are really beautiful in many places. The gunplay has improved as well after being too freaking easy in the beginning, at least now I can't go just gun blazing as some enemies can already one-shot me. Really loving the weapon variety also, not the best ever in a shooter, but still effecive and rewarding
I won't regret not buying it, cause the full price was way too high, but I can see myself getting it on one of the big Steam sales.
BTW, performance is sweet.

Game is great.
But the engine has to fucking go. It has overstayed its welcome and it wasn't that welcome to begin with. While the way it feels (now, after the patches for D3 and Q4, because id originally fucked it up) is better than most games, it still isn't Tech 1-3 worthy material. My hate for this engine isn't exactly a secret and the repeated texture failure is only fueling it.
As much as I'm liking the game, I'm not going to buy this, which kind of goes against I've done the last 5 years. I've bought every game that I even remotely intended on finishing and for most I didn't even ISO demo. But after they fucked up Q4 the way they did (fuck you haters, SP might've been good enough, the MP was borked beyond belief and that's what I + the entire Q3 community were waiting for), the insane amount of bugs in ET:QW and then another buggy game in RAGE. And now there's another game on this crap engine.
tonizito wrote: | And from what I've seen the issues with AMD GPU's keep happening with this one for some people. |
It's not.
I don't know what Mchart is on, but the issues this one has, have nothing to do with Nvidia or AMD. I get out of memory warnings like there's no tomorrow (even though there's still 4 gigs free; seems they haven't picked up on the community's x64 fixes to the T4 source) and at some point Windows goes "fuck you" and closes the whole damn thing. And FWIW, I played RAGE on my 5870 and had no issues other than MegaTexture being shit like it was for everyone else.
Oh, and fluid Mchart? Sure, as long as you run at exactly 60 FPS. There's logic hardwired to frames and it'll act weird at anything other than that. I'd love to play this at 120 Hz as it's the perfect game for it, but the game won't let me.
Tech 4 is just a buggy piece of shit. They've put some shit in there that technically breaks the specs they should've adhered to. Carmack has said so a number of times. The way they do some things is just technically not supported by both Nvidia and AMD. But at the same time they refused to use the extensions both Nvidia and AMD have put out for OpenGL. MegaTexture in itself is just one giant hack, because when they implemented it there were no ways to do it properly. And rather than rewriting it for RAGE, they stuck with the ancient code.
The source is full of stupidity. Here's a couple of examples. If you look at the history for any of the forks, they're all full of fixing broken logic.
Code: |
for ( i = 0; i < numPlanes; i++ ) {
for ( j = 0; j < w.GetNumPoints(); j++ ) {
for ( k = 0; k < verts.Num(); j++ ) {
|
On the third line, it should be k++, not j++.
Even in the core gameplay logic there's stupidity:
Code: | if ( player && ( !player->oldButtons & BUTTON_ATTACK ) && ( player->usercmd.buttons & BUTTON_ATTACK ) ) { |
Any programmer should spot this with ease if you've ever used bitmasks. Hint: the second condition can never get a sensible result.

All I know is that when I look at the install size, the obvious streaming and stuttering - I utterly fail to realise the advantage of this tech.
As for AMD/Nvidia - I had AMD when I played Rage originally, and I had a TON more performance issues than I did when I tried it on Nvidia.
I don't really care who's to blame, though. I just want to play the game without issues.
On my 780 ti, Wolfenstein is fully playable and reasonably smooth. But it looks no more than decent - and it's not as smooth as other games that look a lot better.

And this:
Does not belong together. On a 780 Ti, for how it looks, it should be 100% smooth. There's hardly any dynamic lighting to speak of, textures are shite, character models are good but do not have crazy amounts of polygons.
Ancient Tech (pun intended). Them still using this engine is just as bad as CoD games still being on a half-assed fork of Tech 3. Neither Nvidia nor AMD are to blame for the issues with this one or with RAGE - not until they fix the core engine. Sure, with RAGE some issues were hacked around with driver updates (hacking indicating exactly what I said above, the game doing shit it shouldn't be doing), but most had to be fixed via game patches. Simple things like swap-tear are also proof of what I said above, them doing shit they shouldn't be doing. That's a programming issue, not a driver issue. For those who don't know what that was: they were using an extension neither Nvidia nor AMD had fully implemented yet; AMD had it in the driver but it wasn't exposed, so RAGE should NOT have been using it. Arguably it's a failure in OpenGL's design that it was even possible to do so, but it's a programming error nonetheless, they should've checked for support of the functionality first (there's mechanics to do so in OGL and D3D alike).
