I can't help but notice how great some of these TV shows are lately.

Most recently talking about Fargo & True Detective, and even some shows that have been around for a little while like Breaking Bad & House of Cards.

When did the standard for TV shows become so good?

It seems in the past 5-7 years TV shows have really taken a huge leap forward in terms of quality, acting, and story. I for one love it and can't get enough of it.

Looks like it will just keep getting better and better as some of these big names actors are now realizing that great TV can mean great things for their career.

A shout-out to some of the other current running shows I really enjoy.

- Doctor Who
- American Horror Story
- Bates Motel
- The Walking Dead

More monies? Productions also seem to focus more on shorter but more qualitative seasons.

I'm alright with shorter seasons really. I'd much rather have 10 good episodes than 25 episodes with only a handful decent and the rest filler.

And not to say there weren't great show 10+ years either, they were just fewer and further in between.

The Shield, OZ, Six Feet Under, Sopranos, and even the first season of lost is coming up on it's 10th year anniversary.

It's hard to keep up with TV these days Laughing

Like it's been said, higher production values are definitely one of the main reasons. With more budget at your disposal you can hire better directors, actors, writers et cetera; TV shows these days are really close to AAA movies in terms of sheer quality.

In the end, it all depends on good ideas though, without them everything is pointless. Razz Many old shows have managed to make up for the lower budget by presenting brilliant concepts more focused on character development rather than technicalities and cinematography.
It's just..a different era, don't know if better or worse, just different.

I really don't see much of improvement. I find most TV shows boring. Yes there are some good ones but that's to be expected as they now make tons of those and many shows are just a theme alteration of others.

Yup quality TV shows are rare the ones I really like so far are
Spartacus, walking dead, breaking bad, game of thrones. I just don't care for episodical tv show like CSI, NCIS, drama qq wife series. Some comedy show are good but I don't bother to watch each episode because there's no real story in it. Used to watch Lost, Prison Break but they got dumb/boring.

The answer is simple, they simply switched from movies to tv shows (money wise which also shifted quality actors), seems to be a trend for a long while now.

So movies get less but the shows get more.

I'm very much okay with that. I like quality movies, but I like quality shows more. Razz Obviously there are some genres/concepts that are more cinema-friendly and not too suitable for TV, hopefully those won't get butchered.
