huh? they actually have a 200X? Bear in mind by 'XX' I meant 00-99 as in any future flight sims. And for what it's worth, the cockpits in Century of Flight did not suck.

I think they did.
they allways look the same, take lomac for instance...the cocpits are so realistic and nice, even though the buttons arent clickable.
MS 3D Cocpits looks ok...
anyhow, with or without cockpits im sure that X3 will be awesom... waiting for it impatiently...

I think that's a good solution because making detailed cockpits for 70 or so ships would take too much time and the new interface looks great even without cockpits.

He was talking about X2 Wink
But you can count on the sequel to have at least as many ships Smile

Here is the view from your enormous transport ship. You can see to the far front of it from your cockpit view so its not like its gonna be all empty.

Looks good, but how userfriendly is the interface? That's what turned me off X2, the interface. It was absolutely horrid.

Thats the main thing they have been promoting besides the graphics, that the UI is supposed to be aaalot easier and better, with mouse support (WOW mouse support Laughing )

You're right, Freelancer was lacking in the true space sim kinda' mechanic, I just really loved the idea that anyone could host their own mini mmo.

And then you have a game like the X series here, with awesome everything, yet single player.

I'm waiting for the amazing combination of the two.. how much would that rock.

Anyone hosting a persistent state multiplayer X3 environment..oh I can dream... Razz

GameSpy: For that matter, are there any on-line or multiplayer features in X3?

Greg Kingston: No. Our ultimate goal is to develop "X-Online Universe" -- an MMOG in a persistent world. While there will always be similarities in X games, X-OU will be a game in its own right and not a mod or a port from any other X game such as X3.

LOL! Jeezus you're fighting on like 3 different fronts here...alot fo our discussion is moot really, but to continue:

Non Clickable cockpits are waste of time and money. I want to interact with everything I can just like I was flying the plane in real life. I mean...holy shit it's a sim right? You know, Simulated Environment? Sure they may look better, but if I can't adjust my fuel mix by hitting a toggle switch on my dash...POS.

MS 3D cockpits look ok...alright so now you've broken our discussion up even further. 2D vs 3D, aesthetics, and potentially MS vs anyone else...heh Smile Again, all of this is moot, but I do appreciate you comprimising on "they look ok" from your original "it all crap" I could have sworn all the cockpits in Century of Flight were 3d...

Finally, I can agree that the game will still most likely be awesome. I am just really displeased with the decision, and alot of my gusto over the game was based on the assumtion that we'd (finally) get interactive, authentic cockpits for our spacecraft. It's fun to pretend my keyboard is an LCARS panel, but to actually see it on screen and interact with it on screen add a huge sense of immersion for me, and in my eyes makes a game far more enjoyable. But hey, I'm a complete ubergeek who would love to actually live and fly an interstellar space ship in real life without requiring selling of my soul to NASA.

Anycase, getting back to my original point. Decision is crap, I'm alittle less gung-ho, game will still be played by me, and it still looks good. Capisce?

Thats all i needed to hear to be honest. I couldnt care less about cockpits, sure they are nice and i would never play a flightsim without a cockpit but since spacesims arent possibly realistic in any way what so ever (since we have hardly been to space) i dont care about the cockpits.

A UI with mousesupport will make X3 alot more accessible than X2 ever was.

Hardly been to space?? Jeebus chriibus holy macarony!! The thing thats not realistic is the flight physics themselves, but that could be "realistic" in the future as well by automated minithrusters.
But yeah i know what you mean, we all know how airplane cockpits look and are supposed to look, while there havent existed any Human race space-fighter cockpits yet
But damn, everything is possible, i love astronomy, i love the scale. From the tiniest component in the microuniverse to the largest galaxynetwork, or universebubbles, whatever u believe =D

Not to mention the research thats being done in particle accelerators, geez dont get me started, fuckin incredible there. And just imagine the facilities we Dont get to know about, with all the immoral and dangerous experiments, gawwd it makes my mouth water just to think about the technology being developed right now as we speak Very Happy

Newtonian pysics FTW. I wish more games would use it, makes for some interesting manuevers in combat, and of course gives you a real feel for space when your playing.

Always got Iwar2, I got stuck on one of the missions (f'in hard game) and gave up, but all this space talk makes me want to go play it again.

I hope more spacesims uses the intertia physics models, which was used in I-War and I-war2. X2 did not use this, which was hugely disappointing for me. Controlling a ship in space in I-War was immersive because of the physics and you could do all kinds of cool maneuvers, while in X2 it felt like dragging a carpet across the floor.

Sadly after reading the official forum there are several things that people are bitching about:

- No cockpits anymore. The views out of your ship will have no cockpit graphics anymore. All ships will have the same HUD now.

- No docking to stations. You trade by "beaming" wares into your ship.

- No docking to your own factories. You just get a popup window where you can choose/select things.

Hmm, not really concerned about the lack of cockpits. to be honest i didn't really like them in x2. i found they got in the way to me.

Docking, well i just found that tedious and actually started to detract from the game.

anyway even with these changes im still going to play this game.

I dunno where you got this information about no docking, but one the ES forums the dev's have made plenty of public statements about docking and have even included screenshots to explain it a bit better. There will be both internal docking for smaller ships and external docks for the larger ships.

As for cockpits, I was a little unsure about it at first thinking you might just a generic view. But the camera views are still located at the same point of the ship where the cockpit is, with a rotating view to look around. IMO now I think this is even going to be better than cockpits because the X2 ones were nothing but arbitrary information that did nothing but block your view. If you want a cockpit like that, go cut out a cockpit overlay out of paper and tape it to your monitor, problem solved. Rolling Eyes

hope this game will be released tonight or tomorow at most, for me it's the game of the year along with Black & White 2 and F.E.A.R., but for Space Sim lover's it's indeed the game of the decade!

well, I liked it, prefer Black & White 2 than Age of Empires 3, but that's only my opinion, but regarding X3, I believe is widely accepted that is one of the greatest Space Sims ever, Followed by X2
