I never played much of the originals

Well, you didn't miss out at all if you skipped Terror from the Deep and Apocalypse (and everything that followed after).

But as far as the very first one goes, yes, you did miss out imho. Looks like shit today but is still awesome and playable nonetheless.

Xenonauts hopefully will be the game to go to for the original experience though.

Tried it yesterday. If I had played this before the new XCOM game then I might have been impressed... but.. ehh.

New one is mainstreamed and flashy...
This one looks rather like original one and I think I'm gonna like it thanks to that.
And XCOM TFTD was a blast for me, liked it much more than UFO EU.

Played the first two classics to death (the rest after not so much) and while I enjoyed Xenonauts and it brought the feeling back of X-com I got tired of it rather fast.
It was beta tho (can it be 2/3 years? Feels the same like Project Zomboid as in how long its been around), so will see when this finally releases if it can keep me interested for a longer time. Back then the frequency of interceptions were a bit too high.

Install OpenXCom over it. Still looks awesome:

Looks like Hq4x or some such, 2x works in some games but above that it kinda messes with the sprites a bit too much, of course it's pretty game specific as well.
(And if you run it windowed at original res it probably looks OK unfiltered or scaled or however it's called.)

Oh, it's out. I guess I should finally install it and check it out now that it is final. I avoided the betas.

Yeah, a bit underwhelming. Razz I wonder if there will be new contents/meaty missions from the community in the future (it seems quite active http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/10-Xenonauts-Modding)

That actually looks really good, I'm tempted to grab the ISOdemo and check it out (inb4 "omg pirate indie game top lel" bullshit) and see how it is. I'm usually not keen on this kind of "tactics" style combat though, since I tend to get raped by the RNG more often than not.

I've played a little bit of the final release a week ago but maybe they change something in the few patches that happened in the mean time.

Do the enemies appear in larger groups than one on the map? They changed the combat between builds and this time I've played it I haven't enountered more than one enemy - Normal difficulty. I've even cheated and they are just sparsely distributed.

The combat a few builds before was really challenging on Normal. And clearing downed UFOs gets boring really fast.
