What are peoples thoughts on this? I just finished reading about it and the people complaining during E3.
Here's my gripe... while there's nothing wrong with wanting playable female characters, it sounds like more people want them for the sake of having them, rather than for any good reason.
If they don't fit within the game, story or what's plausible in the context of the entire game world, then why the hell should they add them?
I don't understand why this has become issue as of late, they did entire AC game about female character who runs around to free slaves but who cares about that right?
any game where you create a character(rpgs, some open world ones etc) yeah ofcourse, aside from those I dont see what all the fuzz is about. Most storys(specially all the liniear crap we get) is written with a specific character in mind for the lead role. Playing a dude in the new Tomb Raider? or maybe Daisy Nukem in the next duke nukem game? Hell no

An AC that no one played? What was it... some wii U version?
If a female character fits the story in a game I don't see the problem.
In games where you can choose between male and female I will choose female if she has some distinctive characteristic or gameplay feature that the male(s) character(s) don''t have. Otherwise, if it's purely visuals, I will choose a male character 98% of times.
Example of the last thing I mentioned is the Borderlands series, I played both games as the female character because I enjoyed the Siren gameplay and abilities more than the other classes, simple
Game devs can choose what kind of protagonists they have in their games, no one else (ok, the publishers maybe ) do not and should not have any say in those decisions. Games are a business, not an outlet for righting some perceived great social injustices, and if the marketing department says a white heterosexual military guy is what the most lucrative demographics respond the best to, then that's what will be in the game. And if people don't like it, then don't buy the game - simple as that.
The problem is that SJW think that diversity and equality must exist in all things. I have no problem with female/black/asian/latino/tranny/furry/cripple/etc. characters appearing in games, or being the major character/s in games. There is no reason they must be included though. At the end of the day games are a commercial product. A business is free to sell whatever product they want. They are not obligated to cater to a specific niche market. I guess it sucks for the minorities, but that's the nature of capitalism.
To be honest it should be possible to choose female character in that one game about France and assassins. That was just a sloppy job by Ubi. But I do understand them now as they probably are closing to deadline and crunching a few more guys from art and animation department will leave them dead just to rig a femassassin.

I'm okay with it.
Wasn't the problem with AC that it basically did not work as W_D did (you're aiden/hurrno on your game but someone else on the game that you invade/co-op, but the difference being that in W_D you can appear to them as a chick? Which would probably have the same moves, animations, etc as aiden)?
If it wasn't then nevermind.
Also I love the example that the press gives from ME3, that the female version of the character finally appears on the cover but leaving out that she was re-designed as a more bimbo looking femshep for it

It all boils down to money. If Ubisoft thought for a second that having female avatars would earn them significantly more revenue, they would have implemented it. The fact is they know they will sell a metric shit-ton of AC5 regardless, so why bother with the extra time and expenditure?

Didn't she appear on the back of the cover? The real cover was still MaleShep. They just made a reversible cover to throw the FemShep lovers a bone.
It depends on how well the character is designed and if they are interesting enough to actually make us give a fuck. Else, no point in having them; male or female.
I don't see why this should be an issue either. Like someone mentioned above, RPG's allow customizing the character's build and you're free to choose the type of character you want. Tomb Raider is already an established franchise. Resident Evil games had multiple playable female characters. There's Bayonetta. Ellie had a strong role in The Last of Us. Jodie was introduced in Beyond: Two Souls. Elizabeth in BioShock Infinite is probably one of the most exuberant character I have ever came across in any video game, albeit being non-playable. Hell, even Clementine is the lead playable character in Season 2 of 'The Walking Dead'.
If they are comparing the quantity of games containing playable female characters, then that's really up to the game developers. For those who are complaining (assuming it's the female crowd), what exactly are their complaints? Interinactive, you mentioned reading about it. What article (if any) did you read?
I hate FPS games where one (or more) of the playable characters is a female. Its extremely annoying to hear man voice coming out of girl mouth. Especially if the guy have really badass voice, like this
Its huge immersion breaker to hear voice like that out of Zoey from L4D for example.
Also great number or players don't like to play as the girl so they simply quit the game in the money they see they are with the female. In L4D it was very common to play with Zoey bot or Rochelle bot because whoever joined immediately left because of that. It was pain in the ass to find a coop buddy for RE5 too. It went like this in 99% of the time "hey who's gonna be the guy? you? ah crap I am not playing with the girl, sorry mate".
In SP games its not a big deal of course, but in MP its crap.
Tomb Raider series
Dreamfall series
99% RPGs
Mirrors Edge
Heroines Quest
NOLF series
The fucking SIMs
3D Sex Villa
Beyond Good and Evil
is what I could come up with right away, and there are plenty more. Some of these games even made it in my top 10.
I dont see why this is even an issue. There are a lot of games with female characters. Developers do what they feel is best for their game and the market they want to release it on. Simple as that.
If someone feels like there are not enough games with this or that, they are free to program their own game or to hire developers to do it for them.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Meh, this is an ancient discussion isn't it? Guys buy far more games than girls and writing both genders into a game takes time and money. I admit I like playing with a solid female character but most female characters I've played are rather dull and they usually get cheesy cynical dialog.
No-One Lives Forever, one of my favorite games, had a female character too and it was used perfectly but even there, you got a character who was very cynical as well. That's the problem with female characters: they pretty much have to make them bitches to make the character "work".

Don't forget Metal Gear Solid 2, where after the tanker level you play the entire game as a girl

for me, i'm pretty bored by the super-macho stereotype that every game comes in.
i tend to play almost any rpg with a woman, if the games let it, because i'm so sick to see only guys doing heroics errands.

raiden is a girl?
Worse, raiden is a bitch.
Lately a cyber bitch, but still a little bitch

Depends on the story. Personally, I think the main character is an important part of the story of the game. It is more important as a story element, than gameplay. And definitely should not be influenced by the game's target demographic. So if you are doing a story that is seen through a female perspective, then you'll have to acknowledge the fact that this could potentially harm your sales. If you're going to compromise, why even write a story like that to begin with right?
As to whether or not there should be choices, or when there should be choices. That all depends on whether the sex of the character impact the story you are trying to tell. So in Devil May Cry, no you shouldn't be able to choose a female Dante. But in Final Fantasy Xiii, yes I should be able to choose between female or male Lightning. Because Lightning could have been both sex and it wouldn't make a difference story-wise. And that is one reason why I find FFXiii shallow as fuck. Anyway...
The same with games like Diablo, it doesn't matter the sex, so I should be allowed to choose gender. For AssCreed, well, it all depends who this guy is. Enzio was male, and was written as a male. The same with all the characters. They didn't went the "relate to as many people as possible" player characters. You could say FC3 had a white young adult who tragically stranded on an island with pirates. Yes it is a very calculated move to have the character the majority of the demographic, BUT they also made him unlikable because he is a whiny ass, rich American kid who became the "chosen one" and fucked the exotic non-white "princess". So he couldn't have been female, and so no choice was needed either.
I could go on, but the point is. There is no need for a choice as long as the character cannot be swapped into another sex without changing his/her reactions, personality, behaviour.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
