52 week ban is pretty harsh but he did post the exploit (Or so it sounds like.) on the public Steam forums, although only after emailing twice and getting no response.
(Well the exploit whatever it was - some of the twitter replies gave a bit of info - at least got fixed due to this.)

Well if he has access to the developer forums or some better contacts that would have been better yeah.
EDIT: That or he could just have sent a PM with the info to a Valve employee on the forums.

And you probably should have read - he contacted them twice in a month to no avail. One of the responses was "it's okay".

If it's true Valve said "we trust developers not to abuse this" and then he went on to do it anyway, then yeah, he kinda got what he asked for.

The guy shouldn't have posted the full exploit on steam but then the wankers at Valve did nothing when he emailed them. Now they give him a 1 year ban. Valve are the fools here, not this guy. This only propagates hate towards them.
Aerius and Sadness,
1 and 2 are still amazing.

And then suddenly what was "okay" became apparent "not okay" and actual issue. Idiocity much? I'm seeing a lot of weird stuff from Valve recently. Usually it was prerogative of EA/Ubi.

He didn't. As I understood, he just made of the pages on ETS2 announcements tabs wiggle and play Harlem Shake. Basically he showed he can do pretty much anything with this exploit, like stealing people's auth session. Except he didn't.

Valve overreacted, they should have fixed the exploit when they were alerted to it, rather than a flippant "we know it's there but we trust you not to abuse it" dismissal. Regardless, I don't see the ban sticking - ETS2/SCS are both very popular on Steam and the loss of updates would be devastating to both the community and developers. Not to mention the inevitable negative PR backlash. I fully believe Valve will rescind the ban soon and just give the devs a slap on the wrist with a stern warning not to do anything like that again.

i dunno... valve is nothing if not stubborn, the difficulty people face trying to get valve to see sense over things, and their unwillingness to fix their own system (and then taking it out on the wrong person when their faults are shown to the public) should show as much.
i think this whole scenario is pretty standard for how valve has changed. im sure 5 years ago they would have behaved completely differently... but these days, they come across more as bullies.
the guy could have handled it better, thats for sure, but he didn't deserve such a punishment for what essentially amounts to trying another way to to alert valve to a big problem after more discreet efforts fell on deaf ears, not exploit it to damage their system.

I still find it unbelievable that with all the money they have, their support is worse then outsourcing it to Apu and his cousins.

What's weird is that Jason Shackles (who does Enhanced Steam) has interviewed at Valve a couple of times, and visited their offices multiple times. And still Valve don't improve the consumer/UI side of things, or hire him. It just makes me despair. A multi-billion dollar private company that's pro-consumer, except when it comes to product and store support.

Only 7 weeklong deals this time? Usually there's way more... Unless there's like another 20 games, but they're all unavailable in my region....
Also 3 of them are music apps? Come on, valve... At least pretend you give a fuck

I don't know, lemem think. Hmm... hypocrisy, double standard?

How is this okay? Especially taking into account you can see such behavior from Valve more and more often.

It's Reddit, so take it or leave, but would be very useful if true. :) |
If that's really tru, trading will change a lot. Well, no, would change. There is another change si coming that worse than this :P

that buy order thing could be really good actually. it should help mop up lower value shit quickly, leaving the average market user who WONT use the system, only my higher priced items to buy

no idea if the whole thing is true , about valve not doing anything after the dev told them about the exploit, but if that is the case, and considering the influx of trillion greenlight games and devs, i think this dev did a good thing in the end, sorta like a white hat. After seeing thing like air control pop up, or the whole muxwell thing, t doesn't take too much for a shady "dev" to appear and take advantage
Sure, they could had fix it when that happens.. with the obvious consequences. Now it doesn't have to happen, thanks to ETS dev.

well valve just announced they've switched everything over to use bbcodes instead now..
and of course lots of people posting #freetimmy
heh
heres the content.. (posted as the group is public, but you have to join it to see the posts.. yep its weird)
heres the link.. for those of you who can see it
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks#announcements/detail/1478619008339817469
----------------------------------
Announcement Changes
Over the past few months we have been updating the Steam Store and Community to utilize bbcode in place of HTML for formatting of text entered by developers and customers. Today we've transitioned game hub announcements to also use bbcode in place of HTML. Going forward, it will no longer be possible to post announcements using HTML. Where possible, we've converted existing HTML announcements to bbcode automatically. If you've already been using bbcode or just plain text, you won't be affected by this change. However, if you've been using HTML there may be some manual clean-up needed on past announcements.
The changes we've made to existing HTML announcements are as follows:
Basic HTML tags, including <a>, <img>, <b>, <u>, <i>, <strong>, <em>, <ul> and <li>, <h1>-<h6>, <p>, and <br> have been converted into bbcode tags.
Other formatting tags like <span>, <div>, and <font> have been left unchanged and will need to be replaced by bbcode (otherwise they will appear in posts as raw HTML).
Tags like <iframe>, <object>, and <embed> are also no longer supported. These were mostly used to embed YouTube videos. If you'd like to embed a YouTube video in your post, simply paste a link to the YouTube page for the video, this will automatically be replaced with an inline preview and player. You can convert an existing /embed/{videoid} to a link by putting the videoid at the end of a watch URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch/?v={videoid}
If you are not familiar with bbcode, you can find an introduction on wikipedia[en.wikipedia.org]. The specific bbcode supported by announcements on Steam can be found by clicking the "Formatting help" button on the "Post an Announcement" page.
