Damn, and I thought I have it bad. Well, you have a roof over your head and I hope a full stomach each day, it could always be worse.

Yeah, it's better than expected to be honest.
The people are ok, some I can talk to for hours every night, other are just minding their own business, none of that "they just look for ways to fuck you sideways" stories. And while the place is dirty and lived down a lot, it's dirt cheap (79£ a week), considering it's close to the center, have amazing transit options (2 tube stations and lots of bus stops nearby), stores and shops are nearby, plus I can walk to work each day so i get my workout and don't waste money on buses.
The real problem is that it's run down a bit. Cramming 14 people in does that. We have the occasional mouse caught in the trap in the kitchen (now we are trying to lure the neighbor's cat in so it would act as a mousecatcher ) and a few people are incapable to comprehend how the sponge-washerliquid-plate thing works and I have to rewash everything I plan on using, but again, not a major issue, just the side effects of living with housemates.

You're from Hungary, right, Zmed?
Why did you leave?

Yep, Hungarian.
I didn't exactly 'leave' just moved for a while to get some experience, money, and I consider it a self-inflicted kick in the butt. Back home I was glued to the monitor, playing from waking to well into the night. I borrowed enough for the first month from my folks and went. My lifestyle was a dead end and incredibly unhealthy. I'm just glad I managed to have enough courage to do it.
London is incredibly popular with Hungarians, lots of them are around. We come here more than anywhere else in the EU for work.
I like it enough so far that I just might make it permanent. The economy back home is in the shitter, and as I said, with a decently priced apartment, you can save yourself some spending money even on minimum wage, a stunt impossible back home. There the minimum wage is barely adequate for students for a summer job (2.6$/h , as opposed to the ~10$/h here).

I live in Hungary atm, and my perspective is different, I find the economy lacking as well, but it seems I am one of the lucky ones. I live in Budapest, and it's a blast.
I have a few clients from London (Hungarians) - and went a couple of times as well. Very good city for work, imho. My programmer mates, who live there, earn a fortune.

zmed wrote: | Personally, it's not even about integration. The thing is that foreigners come here to take jobs the native English kids won't go near.
But the natives won't take these jobs and if the ukip people would have their way, 90% of fast food joints would close down overnight. |
The loudest whiners -and this goes for any country- are indeed those who wouldn't take the jobs a lot of "immigrants" get and who complain when "immigrants" speak with an accent. And the funniest part to me is that they're typically also the kind of people in a country who can't speak or write their own language for shit.
And I put immigrants in quotes, because here in NL there's "immigrants" who've been stuck in the system for over a decade, had kids born here who don't know any better than our country. And those people aren't allowed to get proper jobs, because they're not citizens and at some point someone still decides that they have to go back to wherever they came from.
I can honestly say that I've met more people from my own country who I think need to fuck off to some hellhole than I have met annoying immigrants. Heck, I just have to look at my own neighbourhood. As quiet as it is around here, there's 2 families in my street who are freeloaders, "natives" in both cases. There's also a "gypsy" camp near me and they are in fact born and raised here, they're all Dutch, citizens and everything. And yet, they enjoy a fuckload of exemptions when it comes to taxes and such things; half of them don't work either and a few KM from here the big problem camp (Vinkenslag, for any Dutchies) is basically the place to go for most illegal things you would want. They think they've cleaned that place up, but they haven't
Those are the people I want out of my country. I don't care where someone was born. Same goes for the UK, I've met so many fantastic people there, probably half "foreigners"; and yet, the annoying ones I've met were "native" chav scum.
@ Invasor: I'm sure that goes for every country
Sure as hell goes for NL too at least

Well, naturally if you don't work for minimum wage in the capital, it will be better.
But generally, it's quite hard for anyone to find a job that pays a wage that you can make a semi-comfortable living on. Those are usually filled up with people with connections and the rest of the dredge jobs are hard to live with.
I tried to find a job in my home town and it was very hard. Ended up as a filing clerk in one of the local hospitals, but it was extremely soulcrushing. Monotone, boring, and barely paid a dime. I get double the money now on the local MW and i get to enjoy the smell of dripping burgers every day.
Oh, and I get free lunch.

Maybe one day, when the family won't need me anymore, I'll find the courage to do that too. Sadly I'm in no condition to leave at the moment (father needs help with work, grandfather/grandmother need assistance and so on) so, it's kinda tricky, if not impossible.
I'd like to, though, because Italy has no future at the moment for uni graduates, the promised investments haven't been made, companies keep shutting down like flies, and the country is like an once-glorious-now-oldass Panda that can barely start.
@Claude: I wish you all the best, hope you can find a satisfying (and gratifying) place soon that can make use of your skills, or at least make you happy (which should be the #1 priority, imo ). Just have patience, something will pop up *fingers crossed*

Dunno if anyone cares, but I already found something in dtp, some guy (friend of a friend) wants another guy to make postcards and wedding invites and so on. Pay is good, with the possibility of getting higher (better than Ubisoft). Sounds good, already saw the guy, asked me to make an invite on his laptop, he liked it, told me the downsides (I will have to run a lot in the building, and it's a non-issue, I wanna lose weight anyway) and I should start a test period on Monday. Yay!
Easier than I hoped, to be honest, I was really lucky this time.
