Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Platform: Xbox
Release Date: 10/10/2005
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth features creatures and stories from H.P. Lovecraft. With a spin-chilling story and classic survival/horror gameplay, Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth will be bringing a few sleepless nights to Xbox gamers around the globe.
Developed by Headfirst Productions, Call of Cthulhu is a mix of horror, investigation, puzzle solving, exploration, and combat as you are faced with the seemingly impossible task of battling evil incarnate.
For the past few years we’ve been hearing about Call of Cthulhu. In fact our very first news article with regard to the game was posted on April 25, 2001. Yes, that was before the Xbox was even released. Typically a game that has been in development for this long might get lost in the shuffle, but Call of Cthulhu is way too promising a title to be overlooked no matter how long it’s been in the oven. At this year’s E3 the game made its fourth appearance and thankfully still features the innovative and promising approach to gameplay mechanics that had us excited way back in the golden age of the Xbox.
Call of the what now?
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is based on the quirky fictional tales of Mr. H.P. Lovecraft. It will try and deliver a type of horror/adventure experience and will bring all of this to the player through an interesting use of the first-person perspective that we all know and love. The game features absolutely no user interface while in the game which, while it may seem like a dangerous choice, this definitely helps keep the player completely immersed in the experience.
The game is set in the 1920’s as players take control of a private investigator by the name of Jack Walters. Jack was recently released from an insane asylum after witnessing horrific events while investigating a case. Players will uncover a large conspiracy centered around our character all the while combating the insanity that originally imprisoned him. While the system is still very early Call of Cthulhu will employ a type of insanity gauge that will fluctuate as our hero is presented with the various monsters of the game. The screen will quiver and shake and hallucinations will occur to a greater degree as his mental state continually digresses as the plot unfolds.
An example of how the hallucinations will affect gameplay would be when Jack was presented with the tall task of climbing through a very tight space. A claustrophobic themed flashback ensued that showed Jack running through the halls of his former place of incarceration. Patients populated the halls; or at least what appeared to be patients. In reality these wandering nomads were enemy monsters coming in for the kill, thanks to the psychosis of our main character, you will be left out of the loop many times throughout the game as things definitely will not be as they seem. The system is apparently derived from the pen-and-paper role-playing game of the same name if that helps anyone. It’s still a bit unclear as to how this will affect gameplay, but the thought of having insane visions pop up at any time during gameplay is enough to give me the willies already.
The developers are stressing the fact that despite the game being delivered from a first-person perspective it will not be a mindless shooter as so many other games have been in past years. Instead Call of Cthulhu will perform more like an adventure style game with elements of horrific events thrown in as our character plummets deeper into insanity. At this year’s E3 there were a few different levels on display that mainly featured the puzzle solving elements of the game. One such instance showed Mr. Walters locking himself inside of a church as monsters and various other ghouls tried to breakdown the doors. The cerebral element of this map was finding a way out of the holy ground without being detected by the numerous paranormal assailants. Throughout the journey various other puzzles had been setup to try and thwart Jack’s efforts. One of the aspects that is being stressed is the ability to circumvent a few of the puzzles by making decisions about how players want to progress. A sneak ability has been bestowed on our main character which allows him to creep passed, or perhaps creep up on, would be villains.
There are 16 levels in all; each will be split up into a handful of stages, but the story will stay consistent throughout. While adventuring will be the main focus there will also be plenty of shooting and action elements to be found. Granted the weaponry won’t be the standard high tech fare that we’re used to seeing but then again cars weren’t around during the premise of the game so it’d be tough to expect laser weaponry to be.
The Outlook
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth has always been a game of immense amounts of promise and the only question has been whether or not we’d ever see this promise come to fruition in the form of the game actually making it to store shelves. After over four years in development it looks as though the game is on track to finally make its release date which has been set for fall of this year. Check back to TeamXbox.com for the long awaited review for this horrifically delicious game.
The game looks friggin awesome, there's no doubt about that, not to mention the voice actors.
I first heard about this game back in 99
It ranks up with "Starcraft Ghost" and "Duke Nukem Forever" games that probably never/or will be released eventually. Im just praying it will arrive on monday as predicted.
I havent' heard/seen a thing about the release (first thought it was a pc only release) till I was on IGN and someone had linked me to a dutch site with a game review, I didn't understand a single word but it sure looked awesome.
Please let it be good
Oh yeah, pc getting 2 new games, xbox getting 3 sequels

It looks as if it may be a bit like Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem on the Cube.... Wonder if they based that game on this considering the idea was around in '99?

game looks really good and got a few nice reviews so should be worth playing
As for framerate, the 360 version runs smooth, while the PS3 is a jaggy mess that chugs along in slow motion.

Damn this takes an age to load (even from the hard drive) and starts with long cut scenes that can't be bypassed,
I only played for 15 minutes but I like it so far.
Its not an out and out action game, kinda reminds me a little bit of a first person Silent Hill in the atmosphere its trying to give with its graphics.
I'm not gonna say more than that after such a short try but its looking like one I'll be keeping and playing a lot.

I just looked through gamerankings and IGN and there are so many Call of Cthulhu games announced. - It's very confusing! Are they really going to release four more Call of Cthulhu games on Xbox and PS2? Four more games on the current console generation??

kinda different from what eurogamers say in their review. They say first 10-15 minutes is not much action, then it hits all of a sudden, but you are saying its an action game throughout. Are they talking abt the same game???

I'm playin' this title now... the only disappointment (at least for now) that I might have is the fact that you can't see your own body (like in Riddick or FEAR), otherwise it seems a good title, maybe not the GOTY but solid enough to grant some good fun.

You mean an optional 3rd person perspective?
I dont remember that being in F.E.A.R?
|
No, actually I meant the fact of looking around and be able to see your own legs and arms (just like in Riddick and during F.E.A.R. - remember the slo-mo kicks and such?) the feature is actually on in COCDCOTE only while playing scripted events.
And also the game is sometimes a *317ch* like during the abrupt awakening in the hotel... anyway I still think it's something worth buying... Cthulhu F'tang!!

Oh right yeah I know what you mean but what I dont understand is *317ch* lol eh?
Edit: Is it supposed to be a leet speak version of bitch? lol
If so why is the abrupt awakening in the hotel a bitch? lol |
Just wanted to be , LOL, about the "abrupt awakening" if u r playing the game that particular section is really frustrating, it took me a while to pass it without a scratch (or going insane), it's a good rush trying to escape a hotel while a lot of thugs are trying to make catfood of you.
The rest isn't easy as well, though... but as I said, this game is worth buying.
