Just wanted to RAGE a bit, and this is the right place.

Well, it could be worse to be honest. Only the left side of it is dumb and doesnt taste anything... luckily my right side is working, and i can taste. I heard of cases that have numbness, no taste at all AND even pain with no healing chances. I mean, i would go crazy...
He put in the needle and i was like going crazy, flashes went through my tongue... and he acted as if im a hypochondriac or something. That made me really mad. Evil or Very Mad

Theres a quite good chance that the nerve heals again... taking some vitamin b and some homeopathy stuff. But it will at least take 6 months...

One visit to the dentist and you life can be literally fucked up... though theres a chance to 1:200000 that this happens, ive read. Anyway, if you ever feel flashes when you get anesthetic, let him instantly pull out the needle!

i would listen to every single soul in here and in the real world who tell you to sue.
i would sue if someone made it impossible for me to feel even a millimetre of skin.

this is your body. you're stuck with it until you die.
if you lose a limb, you lose it for the rest of your life.
you can't run, walk, sprint, dip your toes in the cold sea water... if it's your leg.
heck, if you have kids, you can't play football with them, trip them when they're running around the backyard for fun.
if it's a hand... it's even worse.
tongue is crucial for everything in life. you can't feels things. burning your tongue. speaking will suck balls. you'll forget you has tongue. you'll choke on it in your sleep.

fucking sue. at least for an operation that will fix it and monies.

On a more serious note:
I'll ask my fiancee what you can do when she gets home. She's a Dental Hygienist, and she does anesthetics.

anesthesiologists are awesome!
tell her that she's awesome!
i had an anesthesiologist who worked on my arm before an operation.
made it feel like a rubber pencil. it went back and forth. was trippy. she does gods work!
tell her that even though she never worked on my nerves, she does gods work and she's awesome!

apart from the idiot anesthesiologists who ruin nerves and make peoples not feel things forever Sad

Yeah well, youre kinda right... as a patient, you should get at least informed what "could" possibly happen. Because if i know that, im not sure i would ever get myself a needle again.
But here in europe its very hard to sue someone in such cases. I may get 2-3000 euros, and im not sure if its worth the hassle. I asked in a german forum and they even said, i cant do anything about it. Mad

@Waldo: yeah LUCKILY the right side of the tongue is working, so i can feel and taste something. I have a slight changed speech though, but no one notices it.

@Morphineus: thats nice, maybe she has experienced something like that before. Atm im taking B vitamins and Hypericum D12 (homeopathy).

I try to not make myself crazy... i cant change it anyway. Never expected anything like that to happen, though...

Found a judicial decision over something like that here:

http://www.implantate.com/zungennerv-bei-zahnbehandlung-beschaedigt-patient-traegt-restrisiko.html

It basically says, its your own risk... bad luck.

Well before you take actions it's best to wait 48 hours since it can be temporary.

My fiancee said if you felt flashes they might have hit and damaged a nerve, there is a chance of it being permanent but that's not that common, it can take a while before it heals and indeed it can be up to 6 months.

Make sure they noted what happened in your dental journal, most in Europe are strict on keeping records on what they performed and used. It can happen with anyone but it's maybe better to change dentist.

About the to sue part, she thinks you won't get anything out of it. That being said, after those 48 hours and you are still worried contact them again. So they can inform you when you are in a calmer state.

Assuming you never experienced this before and it were flashes that you felt, othwerwise it can be something different.

(She was naming the nerves and procedure and all that crap: I said "keep it simple" )

Thanks mate for talking to her about it. Didnt had a sue in mind anyway.
And im quite positive that the burning sensation will get away again, as i can feel pain quite well in the numb parts of the tongue.

I just dont know what to do in the future... i dont want to take that risk ever again. Neutral

Don't be afraid, normally with a decent dentist it's not that common that they hit a nerve. If you feel like it's because he doesn't take his job serious then change dentist (which my fiancee think is the case instead of a silly mistake).

While the US suing policy is fucked up, the EU is perhaps even more fucked up. In the US you can actually sue someone when they do shit like this to you, but here you'll just end up with a loss even if you win. Maybe...

On the other hand, i can understand it... its happens very rarely and what else options are there then a needle with anesthetic? What pisses me more of, is that i wasnt informed of the possible risks, and the doctor, not even knowing what was going on.

I guess the risk for a car accident is quite higher anyway... gonna change the doctor nevertheless. You Suspicious Be

Be patient.
This is a complication. Not necessarily a mistake.
The doc/dentist should have explained to you that there are smalls risks of any procedure.
Your nerve can regenerate faster than 6 months and all get better...
Be positive.
Not vindictive. (not saying you were)

It doesnt have to take 6 months but yes its a very disturbing feeling and can be frustrating(have had extensive surgery on the jaw and teeth and had lost feeling, temporarily, in my chin). Its much worse than what it means if people havent tried it.

But fingers crossed..complete damage like that is rare, considering what happened! Smile

Skip the homeopathy bullshit. That won't do anything.

Also I'd sue the motherfucker for negligence...

Ever heard of the placebo effect? Its a real, scientific measured positive effect, just by thinking positive... if you would take this stuff and think the way you think, it would probably even make it worse, i guess. Razz
