In all seriousness, and jokes aside, I'd like to dedicate a moment of silence to the glorious FPS genre. Especially the single-player portion of it, which nowadays is basically treated like third world scum.
We were used to having 9-10 excellent solid and unforgiving old-school shooters per year, whereas now, we're lucky if we manage to find 1-2 of them that don't suck, the ones that don't treat you like a baboon, or at least they do it more politely.

Even maybe Portal, L4D and Dayz to some degree just for trying to create new types of gameplay. Most of those in that list are same game, same gameplay and same engine just reskinned as well. |
Being the first at something makes you influential. But it doesn't make you best. Half life. 2 is a shit game. It's overrated. That's it. It brought us steam. That is all that hl2 is good for. L4d is a better shooter than hl2. It has better tech and better mechanics. Dayz is a shit shooter. Convoluted wannabe sim. Sims are not good shooters. They aren't fun. They're tedious. Stressful. Glitchy. Buggy. Fun when you stop giving a fuck and play it like an arcade whilst making a fool of yourself. And then you get bored and look for sim things to do like cleaning humvees.
Cod may be derp. But it has the fps mechanics down pat. And it improved on them. It took what made ut great and amplified it. Added stupid shit but it became addictive. Battlefield tried to copy it it failed but C: loved it because it was C: but after bc2 the fps mechanics in bf games went downhill.
The list wants to talk about best shooters while naming only popular ones and the ones someone yelled out at the office meeting.
There are much better shooters out there that have good solid spectacular shooting mechanics than half the shit in the top 10. Not to mention in the top 50.

I agree, i assume people with poor opinion of HL2 played it well after it was released probably coked up from a COD / Battlefield frenzy.
Gman's Face: Mind Blown.
Physics System: Mind blown.
Physics Puzzles mixed with FPS: Mind Blown.
Gravity Gun: Mind Blown.
Ragdolls: Pretty sure we saw this first in HL2.
Also the world takes place around you.. you are never locked into some stupid cut-scene shit diving through choppers strangling dogs and punching rockets bullshit by pressing X. I love that valve don't force things down your throat while playing and you either see it or miss it. My only complaint with HL2 is that is was a bit vehicle heavy thats all.

HL2 engine was cool, but the game was nothing but an on-rails spectacle showpiece. It felt more like a long demonstration than an interesting shooter.
To me, anyway.

I remember mincing many many foes with gravity gun coupled with saw blades in Ravenholm.

Then you need to aim higher!
Been a while since I played it, though..but I think it was possible

HL2 was released in 2004, so yeah, even fewer games that could look better that year.

Unreal not ground breaking? What the fuck are you smoking? It blew HL and Q2+Q3 out of the water in terms of visuals, had lots of little technical things that made the engine so much better looking. It also took sound more seriously than any game before. And then there's the fact that it shipped with a game scripting language + map editor that was as good as Valve's.
The rest I can all get on board with, but anyone saying Unreal wasn't ground breaking either hates Unreal or didn't actually play it and its peers at its release.

HL2 was _the_ first Steam game. CS 1.6 was "on it" before, but that was to actually test Steam.
So yes, it being your first Steam game kind of makes sense

What seems to be the problem? | I just don't get how you could say HL2 had OK graphics. I personally can't remember a better looking game in 2005. |
As it was pointed out already, kids who didn't play the game in 2004, because it didn't came out in 05, played it obviously recently and either don't understand whats in front of their eyes, or certain things that stood out ten years ago don't anymore. I mean the way havok was implemeted and the shit you could do, the fact that they had an idea like the gravity gun, mindblowing. Unique.
The enviromental storytelling instead of cutscenes. The constant change in design, in pacing, in things you had to do. The feromon weapon and the way you could control antlions. It was a gaming tour de force, unlike anything ever made at that time. And the graphics were ok only? If you needed more proof that people claiming this didn't play the game then ... Even a year and a half ago, in the first part of 03, it was all about Doom 3 and Half Life 2, both from a gameplay point of view and the technical side.
Well, in truth, a lot of things that were new or excelent back then get dampened out with time. No one gets all excited now when you see a physics engine or you drive a car. So in that way its understandable that people who haven't experienced the game when they should've don't get it properly now

Far Cry 1 also came out in 2004 and took alot of the wind out of the Doom3/HL2 sails.
It had open world, vehicles and a great graphical engine
The open world islands stood out as being truly innovative and really hammered a few strong nails into the coffin of restrictive linear corridor FPS from then on in.
A decade later and we still haven't nailed that damn linear coffin shut but hopefully one day we can exist outside of the box, free to roam wherever we want telling scary campfire stories about the "age of the linear".
*shudders*

So what I got from this thread, it's not ok to dislike HL to some?
I never got to half the game in HL and I only reached 50% of the game in HL2 (And I tried couple of times!). For some reason I always lose interest in them and the weirdest part is that I'd rate HL higher than HL2 even tho I played HL2 more.
For a lot of things that HL2 did right it also did a lot of things wrong for me. That game was at that time the face of the direction of where shooters were going by taking the linearity even further and I did not like what I saw.
See I was very naive about video games, I thought with time progressing: worlds would get open, bigger, more complex processes going on in the background, stories would get fuller...
HL2 was yet another smack in the face and everybody loved it because of graphics and gimmicks, while I was crying in my open world in Far Cry (how I hated that game when those mutations came into it ).
Another thing I disliked about HL2 was the engine, it feels very off for me, for shooters that is... not so much with other games (even tho the awkwardness is still there) but that comes down to personal preference and what you are used on.
I don't mind it having a spot on a list with best games of whatever, since a lot of people loved and liked it and it brought us steam, Portal,... and in the end and it let a community play around with it's engine.
But... let people dislike it... I bet everyone of us have at least a few games that everyone is so enchanted with that you dislike
TL;DR:
I dislike HL, go suck it!

HL > HL2, definitely. I would be unable to make such a list (vide OP), there are so many great FPS's.
