And every FPS sits in a different genre. I couldn't choose between Q3, Unreal and HL for example, as all three are the best in one way or another.
All I know is that from I had a great fucking 18 months, starting in late May 1998 with Unreal, ending with Q3 in December 1999. 3 vastly different but equally epic shooters in a row like that, that hasn't happened in quite some time.

Some games would fit in two categories, i.e. Rage

Unreal not ground breaking? What the fuck are you smoking? It blew HL and Q2+Q3 out of the water in terms of visuals, had lots of little technical things that made the engine so much better looking. It also took sound more seriously than any game before. And then there's the fact that it shipped with a game scripting language + map editor that was as good as Valve's.
The rest I can all get on board with, but anyone saying Unreal wasn't ground breaking either hates Unreal or didn't actually play it and its peers at its release.

Yeah, but if you put in unreal then you can easily dismiss the others as it improved on a whole lot of things and made them better. Then that whole list would be different and it would be about other things. I agree with you though.
I like reading people defending hl2. They're talking about how awesome the gfx are and how awesome the physics and the puzzles is. Lol. It's a shit shooter. A great looking shit shooter.
@hindsights, lol. Far Cry. Far Cry. That insignificant shooter that did nothing for the industry with horrible controls, horrible mechanics and just pretty gfx and an open world. Such an ambitious game that made crytek millions of dollars and now they're a studio that can stay afloat for years to come. It farted in the direction of doom 3 / hl2. It did NOTHING. Derps loved it cause of GFX but I don't think people actually beat it. There were so many better games at the time. Now the sequels are 10x better than farcry. Still shit shooters though.
@wawrzul I hope you are not insinuating that COD is the worst FPS out there. Because it is not. Obviously you have not played it for more than 10 hours. COD has made some significant innovations, it's a good corridor shooter, and it is very important to the FPS industry at this moment in time.
Also if you judge games based on innovations then you'll have a whole list of games most of which aren't here, and then you consider the fact that most of these nuances that many games created were dropped because of focus groups\popularity\money. You end up with a very short list of shooters that influenced 99% of shooters you see coming out today.
And then you get into a whole argument because it will then come down to preference. Do you include Doom, Wolfenstein or Quake when you talk about current shooters. And then you start getting all emotional talking about how each game influenced the FPS industry and therefore they all must be included and you're back at square one. Blah Blah Blah Blah. It's BS. lol.
Regardless how influential the game is for what it created, if its successor improved on those things, then that successor should be listed. Because it's not a history class here, it's survival of the fittest. And right now we have CS v COD as nothing else really exists and CS is fading because CS:GO tried to be COD.

COD franchise is amazing. Personal preference of course. The psychology in that game, the dudebro adrenaline rushes are what companies try to copy and fail at constantly. Look at bf3/bf4/every EA FPS coming out/titanfall. But then you look at CS:GO where valve used their idea of what made COD franchise so addictive and they improved on it. They improved on it like nintendo would improve on a shooter. Their own take, perfected by years of experience in the field. Top Notch people in the industry using their input. Anyway, gotta stop sucking gabens cock. CS:GO got the formula of COD so right that it worked. It's plagued by a shit engine. But CS:GO is so fucking fun. I can see why people hate it.

Anyway the only other game that got the COD feel right in FPS genre was bulletstorm. It failed. Shit franchise now. Incredibly fun. Shame it bombed. It came out at the height of DUDEBRO GAMES ARE SO GAY!!!! but it could have shaped the FPS industry if people had given them a chance. COD FPS with BETTER FPS MECHANICS. Like stupidly better FPS mechanics.

No, can't really dismiss HL or Q2/Q3 versus Unreal, because Unreal didn't get everything right. AI was shit, storytelling was exceptionally weak and the shooter element definitely needed the improvements it got in UT

what do you know about shooters other than that the best looking shooter is the best one. HL2 is shit. It will always be shit. Just because you got wowed when it came out, doesn't mean shit. I got wowed at the leaked alpha. The main game was a repetitive mess. It had gimmicks. That's it. Many games improved on what Half Life 2 brought to the table. Not many improved what HL1 brought though.
@Werelds... you can't really factor in story telling. It's not the devs fault that they got high and thought that this story was epic. but I never liked unreal series. Don't even remember much playing the first one, only the newest one with the nude model.   Would you skip unreal all together and jump straight to UT in terms of improvements in the FPS genre? Cause UT to me has a big influence over the whole COD dudebro franchise philosophy.

Runs a tad better than cryengine while looking slightly better than UE3, it got sorted out indeed 
No idea about the accessibility regarding the other two but seeing its wide adoption I can take a guess on that too.

And that's the main problem with csgo. Valve did a grown up version of cod. If they were to copy the cod formula 1:1 Csgo would have been huge.

Well IMO Quake 1 was by far and wide the biggest game changer for FPS's. It has so many technological firsts and changed the industry permanently. Also the MP was for me the best of any FPS. Q3 was based off of Q1 mods but still Q3 wasn't as fun to me. But yeah that list is just an opinion list.. BF3 is a lot worse than BF2 once you consider the mods. But I guess CoD/Halos were huge commercial breakthroughs for the industry too. That counts for something. Shrug.
