If know, if they were to ban cars.. pollution levels would drop significantly more. But who are we kidding here?! No one gives a rats ass about that, like Shocktrooper said, it doesn't matter, just hawk the fuck on it!

The fact that people jump more easily to hate smokers than alcoholics is mind boggling.

Quote:
I have lost my best friend as a kid to a drunk driver who walked away without a scratch, ending my childhood right there and then.

Im sure there is people on here who lost friends/family/relatives to throat cancer, a gruesome death.

What makes you think that alcoholics are disliked less?
It's just that, normally, alcoholics are not part of people's social clique, unlike smokers, so people do not really have interaction with alcoholics, other than, as your quote says, tragic circumstances.

But I don't understand the criticism either. Yes, alcoholics are bad, pollution is bad. And so is smoking in your face. What seems to be the problem? Some things you can change, some things you can't. Smoking in public you can.

NOT FLAT ENOUGH.

The problem is the generalization that all smokers "smoke in your face". I enjoy smoking; smoking + coffee combo is one of the best and most relaxing pleasure for me.

I also think of myself as a smoker who doesn't infringe on other peoples rights (before starting to smoke I had my rights infringed by other smokers, and I know how it feels); I try not to smoke near non-smoker, especially in crowded places; I don't throw cigar buds willy-nilly on the ground, I even carry a portable ashtray just in case there aren't any street trashboxes around; I always ask permission whenever i'm in a new house/place around other people I don't know/non-smokers, and so on. And whenever I see this type of non-smokers(yes, "this type" because I know and have meet plenty of non-smokers that had no issues with this) going after smokers with the same attitude seen in this thread I wonder why the fuck do I even bother!

My point is that it's the same with any kind of generalization; it ain't fucking good!

Cool, so we have no problem. If you want to smoke and don't bother anyone and go to great lengths not to, you are a cool guy. Not everyone are like you, and you must see how naive it is to suggest so. A lot of smokers don't care, and see these rules and regulations as persecution. Like gun owners in America. As long as you don't bother non-smokers, they shouldn't bother you.

Now let's discuss people's attitude toward smokers in general. Do you reject medical claims that smoking is non-healthy? If you do, discussion is over. If you don't, then you must see a point where people say "what a waste that this person is smoking and hurting themselves". Why are you bothered by such thoughts and expressions? If you do not dispute medical outlook of smoking, then you are aware you are hurting your body and health, and choose to ignore it because it gives you pleasure. Why are you bothered? Stand up, own it, say you choose to forgo some health for the sake of pleasure.

That doesn't seem to be the case. 3 months ago some fedora wearing moron came into a coffee shop where, at the entrance, it clearly states "In this establishment smoking is allowed" and he starts a huge racket of how everyone's giving him cancer and that smoking should be illegal.

No, I don't.

If you're going to follow me around and jump in my face about it every time you see me light a smoke, then guess again why I find it bothersome. What I do, as long as my action don't oppress your own right, is my own business.

I never denied this to anyone, actually every time I'm engaged in a conversation about this habit I mention the health risks involved. The only thing that bothers me is the mormon like attitude some non-smokers have towards smokers.

gotta say, you sound like the ideal smoker then.

Where I live, people will smoke in your face, your children's faces, etc, and get offended if you ask them to stop.

Its a very big issue. Individually you don't sound harmless. but when there is a group of you, the addiction will be the decision maker. Not good for any society.

Agree. Cigarettes are ugly and stupid. They just disgust me. Especially when nice girl all of sudden pops a smoke
