I have been wanting a camera for ages and have been doing overtime at work every weekend for two months Sad so I now feel less guilty spending money on myself.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1712483.htm

Anyway is this any good, for the price etc? Please note i don't have hundreds or thousands of £££'s to spend, and I realise this is a low end camera.

My price range is probably £200 max, and as above I know I will only get a low end camera for that price.

Cheers for any advice

Personally I'd look for a used Canon 500D or 550D instead, these cheap compacts usually perform terribly in several areas.

I wouldn't exactly call it cheap mate! Anyway as I said I can't go much over £200, so is it OK for that price?

Also please explain where/why they perform so badly.

Thanks

I was looking for a camera and did read some reviews about this camera. I decided not to go for this one because i wanted a better camera.

What i read about it is that it isn't bad but the pictures are not really sharp even more so because of movement.

But as i just bought my first good camera and i'm really new to this it's maybe better to ignore what i think about it. Smile

For a new camera, £200 isn't much.
If you want the most bang for your buck, consider eBay. There should be several 550D's within that price range. And a 550D will knock that compact out of the water:

* Exchangable lenses
* Larger sensor
* Much much better performance in low-light
* Better build quality

The only downside is that it's a bit bigger.

If he's been saving for so long it's pretty fair to assume he won't have any money left for other lenses, flashes and the like, a bridge camera might be the best bet for him, considering his range, and they're not exactly compact camera quality, anyway, the SX line is miles above the ordinary compact camera which even a phone has no trouble beating.

Also, if you really do wish to grab a DSLR, the entry level segment is much better where Nikon cameras are concerned, namely the D3100/D3200. However, they usually only come with an 18-55 objective which is usually the cheapest and most feature-less, and a decent lens, such as a macro, 35mm one, or a 55-300mm(I think this is equal to 12x optical zoom on a compact camera, not sure, might be wrong) one will set you back another 100 pounds and more.

To be honest I can afford to pay more, I just cannot ever spend money on myself for something that counts as a luxury without feeling guilty about it, never have been able to never will be able to Smile I have no problem spending loads of money on others though.

So any money I do spend I like to keep to a minimum.

I only want a camera for outdoor shots, I do a lot of walking and love the countryside so would like one for those shots you see but never have a camera handy (except my phone which is crap)

1.Is it worth the asking price? Bearing in mind we always pay way over the odds for everything in the UK

2.From your comments I guess it is not really expandable in any way? (lenses etc)

3.If not this camera which one at perhaps a slightly higher price? (the 550 someone mentioned is £300-£400 so a bit too much, however is that extra few hundred worth it in the long term? If so why?

4.I am no way a professional or even semi pro photographer and have no intentions of ever being so.

I know some on you on here think nothing of spending money on yourselves and good luck to you, but I just can't without feeling guilty for weeks afterwards. Often taking stuff back for a refund! Smile

It's defo worth getting it for that price. If you're saying you have no intention of even semi-pro photography, this should be right up your alley. Also, the camera zooms in from 1x to...a lot with its lens, optically, not digitally, there is no need for expansion except maybe if you find a filter for its lens, they're really cheap.

The pros of a DSLR camera are the fact that the sensor is much, much bigger, it captures more light, more color, more of everything and if you have the cash for it, versatility, there are dozens, maybe hundreds of types of lenses, ranging from macro, tele, normal, etc. Portraits, and even bigger shots, look entirely different depending on the lens. I spent a ton of money on mine, and it stays stashed away along with three objectives, the only thing I paid for and gets used extensively is my 35mm objective which isn't even used by me, but by my girlfriend because she does weekend indoor photography, but that's about it. Was it worth getting a DSLR and objectives? Maybe, for two trips outside of town per year. Do I regret it? Hell yeah, I should have just gifted her an objective and be done with it, instead we have two cameras and one sits idly fuck knows where, I plan on selling because frankly, it's a couple of hundred euros being useless, I'd rather get a cheap, bridge camera for trips and worry less about another expensive thing that might get stolen, lost or broken.

my dad has that one. it's too slow [viewfinder etc]. Sad
but its not bad. i like how some scenery comes out with it.
you're not going to wow people with it, but you may wow them with the pictures Very Happy
it's not the camera that counts Very Happy Even iphones can do brilliant pictures.

So go into a store and check it out. and then buy it online.

I used this one http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=M873-R years ago when i had better cameras around. had brilliant colours and it was just a fantastic piece of wow.
