I knew about that, but haven't checked it for a long time. Strange that it does not show my daily ride to work and back - on bike with gps (endomondo running). Though it would also show up - so I guess now it only works with GMaps.

Knowing where your device was when stolen before it got cut off Very Happy Not that this is of any use.
Apart from "entertainment" of watching how you use to move around - no use for me. But it does not bother me that much as well, and the battery drain is insignificant - I use gps only when on bike, and these are probably the only times it updates the google tracking.

I found this about a year ago, I think it's awesome. I never really use GPS, so I guess it also updates your location using WiFi/cell tower triangulation.

I'm pretty sure they also use the info for Google Now, it tells me pretty consistently at what time I have to leave to and from work to catch the right bus/train, also recommends alternative car routes during high traffic.

Well it tells me if there'll be any traffic on my way to work or home before I even leave the house/office.

What I find much more frightening (and cool at the same time is) that google knows when I order something and google now shows on my homescreen when the packet will arrive and where it is. Or where the flight is that I searched for right now and where it will land...

All that predictive shit depends on our data.
