|
 |
So on Thursday, my sister left with her boyfriend for a two weeks trip to Europe and now I have to take care of her for that time.
I try to hang out with her upstairs or bring her to my room so she can chill with me for a bit, but all she does is meows
What worries me is that she still has not touched any of her dry food or treats. I change the wet food in the morning and in the afternoon but she didnt touch any of that either.
Any cat experts? Also, worth noting that the cat is 18yrs old and skinny for that one. She has a stomach troubles for past a year or so.
I just hope she won't die on me while they are on vacation

This COULD be really bad, cats suddenly not eating and refusing food is really bad, I would take her to the veterinary immediately. Possibly there is a kidney/liver problem here, which MIGHT be serious. Don't delay, take her to the vet.
I do not want to scare you, but one of our cats had to be put down, she stopped eating, she meowed, and in a very short period of time (30 hours) went from "normal" to very lethargic, barely moving, not wanting to eat or drink, and just meowing.
Turned out she had liver/kidney problems and had to be put down by the vet.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

cat is depressed.
she thinks she got left all alone with you.
take to vet = expensive
call your sis and let her know.
i take it you didn't spend much time with the cat when your sister was hoam.
the cat will eat. once it gets real hungry. but that's cause mine did that. leave her in your sisters room. with food. and check every hour or so if it's been touched.

The cat has been having stomach troubles for past year. I am not sure if it's a cancer or something. They know it's just matter of time before she dies.
No, I didn't spend much time with the cat at all. So probably she is not used to me at all.
I will try to get a hold on my sister to see whats up.

it's cat depression. my cat did that too when i went on vacation.
she also did the same thing when we temporarily moved.
she stopped eating when your sis left.
technically the cat could survive a week w/o food. but she'll go crazy.
monitor the water bowl / food bowl.
eventually she'll start eating.
is not the cancer - stomach thing.

What waldoj said, it is most likely 'depression'. Had that a few times with my sisters cats and dogs. Tho a dog always seems to be going over it faster when it comes to eating especially if it's something they really like.
Try a treat first (aka the stuff they get rewarded with, the good stuff) and check if it at least drinks. Try to stimulate it into eating/drinking (as in spend a lot of time to trying to get her eat).
Feel if the stomach is hard or not (if it lets you) or if you notice anything else than an appetite loss call the veterinary. They usually guide you through some basics and then determine if you need to come in.

You say it's your sisters cat and that you "bring her to my room", so I assume the cat has been moved to your home that she is not used to. I'm no cat expert but couldn't the new change of environment be causing the cat a lot of stress and that's why she isn't eating?

Yeah, would visit a vet as well. My previous cat stopped eating and the cause was cancer.

yeah but that's in prime environment. where you can notice the cat not eating.
when something big happens ... owner leaves ... move ... etc .... it's not a prime environment.
Cats are loyal + emotional. When stressful shit happens... cats go cray cray sad.
if the cat suddenly stopped eating because of stomach issues just as your sister left... then that's just god laughing at you and jizzing all over your face. if the cat had stopped eating the day before your sister left then you should worry. if the day/two days after (as in the cat still ate the day or two after your sister left) then you should worry. If it stopped eating when she left.

I've been working two summers with a vet, worked on a cat home and have had cats all my life, and seen plenty of cases similar to this. Get a blood test. Even IF it is cat depression the cat will need food.
Cats aren't like humans, they don't eat = their system starts taking damage a lot quicker than people.
18 years is really old for a cat. Unfortunately I think it's kidney and possibly liver problems.
Yes, yes I'm back.

Well, I got in touch with my sister and she said that I should not really worry about that this that much.
She does drink water at least. Bowl was half empty when I woke up this morning.
@fisk
They already know that the cat has something. Her brother died about a year ago from something. Think it might have been cancer but I never asked.

Story of my cat . She was ~18 years old also.
I hope this is not the case for you, but this is very common indeed with such old cats. Anyway, the fact that at least she drinks from time to time doesn't make the situation too dramatic, but I agree with Fisk, some vet-time is recommended to clear things out a bit.

Cat stomach cancer is common.
If you dont see any food eaten for "days" I hardly doubt its depression, unless you find it hanging in a closet the next morning.

Happened to our cat. We noticed it had gotten thinner. Once it looses its appetite its hard for the cat to get it back.
My wife forcefed it thru syringe, but it didnt work, so we had to put it to sleep.

Any number of problems can cause symptoms like that. Infections in the urinary tract (ie. the cat is in a great deal of pain without you knowing it), parasite infection, any number of cat diseases etc... Waldo says "cat depression, it will eat when it gets hungry" is extremely irresponsible.
Make money for a visit to the vet, ignoring it or just hoping it will start eating again is similar to what certain Christian cult members do when they get cancer and shit (and die).

My cats go away when I go away. Literally don't come back for a week. They are outdoor cats though and eat small animals, so we don't worry about it. Cats are very much influenced by owners leaving - more than you might think. It's possible the cat is depressed but given it's age and it's medical condition, it sounds likely there is something else wrong.
My guess is, if you take it to the vet, they'll want to put it down. I'd speak to your sister, find out what she wants to do. Could she live with the cat getting put down while away? If not, then try to keep it comfortable. It might be more likely to eat chicken or tuna, maybe try these. To be honest, not taking it to the vet is selfish on the part of your sister - the cat is obviously unwell and in pain.

Don't humanize animal behaviour. Cats can be sad, but there's always a good reason why it doesn't eat.
Make sure the litter box isn't next to the food.
Also, cats drink a lot, but you often don't see them drinking. Just monitor the water level.
Check the litter box for blood, urinary/liver/kidneys are the common problematic areas and could be deadly in a matter of days.
Vets don't put animals down without your consent, and it doesn't hurt to go for a checkup. Especially with an older cat.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

We have a cat who stopped eating the three weeks we were away in Spain on our honeymoon, almost had liver failure, spent about $1000 at the vet (overnights/IV treatments etc) and had to feed her by syringe for a few weeks (I wrapped her in a towel and held her while she struggled, my wife squirted the food down her throat). Nearly 5 years later and she is still going strong (was only about 3 at the time).
So yeah, go to a vet.

So yea, cat finally ate half of the wet canned food that I left in the morning.
Like I said. They DO know that cat has cancer or tumor. She has been skinny for about a year now. When you lift her up, you can feel her skeleton, but she is a lovely kitty who pukes twice a day on a carpet!
