The "problem" with the Mechanized unit losing against the Pikeman, is not usaly a problem. The Pikeman could have a higher Defence bonus (perhaps a veteran or a elite unit). As I can see on the screenshot the city is on a hill, and that gives +25% in defence bonus. This means that the city is well defended. The trick to brake the defence is ofcourse, the ARTY . Use 2-4 catapults or cannos, or MLRS (in modern age), and pound the city. Those babys can take out their entire defence plus some important buildings like Baracks, Granary..ect that slow down the producition of new units. I've been taking over cities this way since Civ I and it allways worked |
A tank (as such) should beat a man with a stick.
However, yes it is rare, but its one of those things much as I love the civ series, that has always bugged me.
Its not as often now, but I have had i happen quite a lot.

If you get an EXTREMELY desperate pikeman, this may happen.

Copied from elsewhere - it works for me.
--------------------------------------------------------
I was having the same problem as everyone. Here is what i did.
1. mount it in Alcohol OR Daemon with NO emulation options on.
2. run sd4hide.exe and click HIDE
3. CLOSE sd4hide.exe
4. Click the game link on the desktop and start with the tutorial =p
------
A REALLY important step missing was the CLOSE part. With it open i always crashed after the splash. |
|
I just mounted it with Daemon Tools turned on all emulation and played.

I got it working! i won the inernet!!
Basically do as above but if it still asks for DVD/CD go to desktop icon and right click > Properties > compatiability and change it from default to Win 2000 save and Dclick.
Worked for me
Good luck

oh my GOD what an addictive game, ive never really played any previous Civ games because i always found the real-world theme boring, and the turn-based.
But then i found Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, and now this, man, it feels like the first time i had a 6 hour AoW run =D

For those having problems starting the game, use this bypass, it works on most of the clones so far, didnt tried it on SFclone yet though
install the game with DTOOLS
=
download this
http://files.cdmediaworld.com/VirtualCDHide%20v1.0.0.4.rar
=
install it and after that you will see some small icon (@ your windows clock )
right click on it and disable all virtual drives...
=
Now go to your FEAR shortcut on your desktop , rightclick on it... go to compatibility and click on run this program in compatibility mode for:
windows 2000...

I've been trying to get this thing to work for 24 hours straight now. Tried pretty much everything. Don't know however what could be wrong with my system.

This game is totally whacked. As the Romans I invented Judaism and Buddhism, the Americans discovered me and I'm currently fighting a war against Ghandi of India and Montezuma.
And LOL Frogger, that movie is HILARIOUS.
I laughed my arse off when George Bush started talking.

They dont really have a choice...
Because if that was the case then 1 tank could take over a entire primitive civ...
Anyways.. just imagine... the tank crew stalled... the pikemen sent out a naked women to distract them.. then the pikemen opened the hatch... and stabbed all the tank crew with there pikes..

Anyone got any tips on how to deal with crowded population in the main city causing permanent sickness because all the health stuff i research and build isnt enugh? =D
Does building Settlers actually take some of the population from a city? And i dont mean the number in the star, i mean the actual food-eating "million" population =D
Also, is there any main reason to use specialists in a city? To me it seems that all you need is stuff you build on the land around the city, making citizens into specialists dont give all that good bonuses, a city full of "free" citizens give way better production than wasting them on making scientists with a small research bonus ?

Hmm I like the engine better than I expected, they've really made it work well - but I'm not sure what all the 'wowness' factor that permeates some peoples posts on this forum is all about. Particularly the music and voiceovers - they are complete droll.
I haven't had a chance to really get my teeth into the game, merely first impressions - but it appears more complicated than the last Civ game, going to take some time to get into the flow.
I'm not sure I like the interface either.
