So... I've just discovered that the trend here is that if you don't accept the challenge it seems that you have to pay the person who challenged you dinner...

This entire fad reeks of bored people during the summer baiting for attention and nothing else. And I find that all "challenges" of these type, that do not provide something meaningful for researching cures or help ease the difficulties of said afflictions, are fucking dumb!
Then read the two links above. The "fad" was started by someone that suffers from ALS, the "fad" is being propagated by those that wish to draw attention to the disease and has already raised *millions* in donations for funding. I don't see how that can in any way be construed as a bad thing.
It's fucking weird sometimes what is required to raise awareness to something. If this had been a regular informational-campaign instead of this, it would've gotten nowhere. Nobody on this morally deprived forum certainly would've given two fucks about it.
But now that it's a "retarded viral video"-campaign, obviously it needs discussion.
It's like that video where a guy wore a sign that said:
"Help the poor"
And asked for donations, and nobody cared, at all.

Well, bad thing is maybe overstating it, but here it's pretty shallow, at least among the people I know.
What they're doing here (as far as I know) is challenging each other to do it. If you don't go ahead with it then you have to pay the person that challenged you lunch/dinner.
ALS, awareness and all that?

That's exactly it. I haven't done the challenge and I have no intention of donating to the cause either, what laughably insultingly little money I have will go towards doing things that make ME feel happy and better - but I'm not about to disparage or mock those that are doing challenges, or are donating to ALS funding. I don't care what their reasons are, whether it's for fame, attention, street cred, or purely altruistic - I simply don't care why, I'm just glad some people ARE. No matter the reason.
I'm just fed up with it popping up everywhere. News, newspapers, politics, gaming websites, Formula 1,...
And what's worse is... with time progressing it's less and less about ALS, most of the time it's not even mentioned anymore and if they do more than half is ignorant to what it even is (heard things like AMS, ASL, LSA..).
Now I'm glad some people do get educated or donate towards it. But its getting tiresome to see it everywhere. I lost a friend to it, so no thank you I don't need to be reminded by people whom are just doing it for nothing else than their image.
Edit: Awareness is good yes, but not when you spout out nonsense and misinformation.

I did before posting.
Why can't people just donate and be done with it... This affair comes off as people who don't usually donate/acknowledge these issues asking for attention. 90% of people involved in this "fight" in some way or another have no clue about ALS, what it means or what it represents. For the same majority, the main thing is throwing a bucket of water on your head and posting it on the internet.
I've been part of charity activities, and still am a member in one NGO were I still go from time to time, as much as my schedule allows me, and every time I asked acquaintances to have some involvement in those activities they all passed. But now they've all ice bucketed their heads or are super pro on this campaign just because of it's popularity and nothing else. This is why I find it dumb, because people acknowledge this as a fun social challenge, a fad, instead of what it actually means to represent.
And I still think it's just a dumb fad, because 3 months from now no one will give a fuck.
Also they made millions? I wonder how the'll actually use that money, and how will they benefit people suffering from ALS.
I also wonder if they would care to share that with other foundations for other, just as awful, afflictions?

How do you donate to a cause you don't even know about? Personally I only had heard the acronym but knew nothing about what it was, or such. The viral-video campaign is about "raising awareness", you know. Making people aware that a thing such as ALS exists, and informing about it.
I've since read up on what ALS is, and now understand why it's important. Shit like this doesn't need to be done about cancer or AIDS anymore, and the reason is that way back when people were making other people aware about that too, from Magic Johnson appearing in public, from different sports events promoting awareness, etc. etc.
