|
 |
Hi all,
I have an interesting 1st world problem here:
A) according to a news-article, 37% of all games bought on Steam are never played
B) on my gaming rig I can only think about project C.A.R.S. and Tomb Raider 2014 and Battlefield and "big" games like that (FPS & such). I dont even play the smaller titles, like all my Humble Bundle games, miscellaneous Indie games and titles like Divinity: Original Sin, aswell as Emulator games. I still didnt finish Torchlight II, Final Fantasy VII & III, South Park: Stick of Truth, Guacameele and many more good games.
C) I tried to, but epically fail to play games on my MacBookPro 2010 (Nvidia 320M ) and I would like to sell my MBP. First I wanted a gaming laptop for 500€ max 15". Then I got the idea to instead build a mobile HTPC which is more powerful for the buck.
I have two places I live 1) home 2) appartment @work.
My hope is that, when I'm away from my power-rig, I can finally find time to play all the lesser HW dependent (but still fun) games.
So I thought about it and I wanted to kind of make my own SteamMachine, sort of.
It should be, as fast as possible for the money, small & light, power saving.
Please give me your feedback & discuss!
Here is my first setup idea:
Spoiler: | |
Code: | 94,90 € i3-4130 2x 3.4Ghz
39,49 € µATX Mainboard
42,99 € HTPC Case µATX
107,90 € GTX 750 LowProfile
66,90 € 8Gb DDR31600 RAM
18,99 € CPU Cooler LowProfile
------- ---------
371,17 € Total |
Note: power supply (400W) is included in case, I already have two spare 256Gb SSD that I plan to use (JBOD).
What do you think?
Pumpy already gave me some AMD CPU & GPU input, but I discarded that quickly as too power consuming, too many PCI slots used, and doesnt fit in the case.
UPDATE:
Apparently there is one vendor with a GTX 750 Ti in LP format:
http://www.hardwareversand.de/en/2048+MB/167189/KFA%C2%B2+GeForce+GTX+750+Ti+OC+Low+Profile%2C+2GB+GDDR5%2C+VGA%2C+DVI%2C+HDMI.article
It costs 10-20 € more, depending where you search, but the stock is LOW, hard to get apparently.
UPDATE 2:
I forgot to throw in a Wireless PCIe card, because I need that. TP-Link TL-WN881ND WL300MBit PCIe, 12 €.
CURRENT SETUP: Even cheaper, same stuff mostly, upgraded to GTX 750 Ti, added WLAN Card, from Mindfactory.de
BTW that Techsolo case is the EXACT same like that MS-TECH above, only cheaper and with no color.
LAST UPDATE: Fuck it, my setup is too good to be topped! And even if, it's not a bad setup in any regards. I just ordered the Mini-ME exactly as depicted in the screenshot above, 367,17 €.

This is more fitting in the hardware zone
Yeah I had some AMD 760K suggested, but that is too power consuming, slow but cheaper. And a 260x... which is apparently fucking huge

Interesting challenge. I'd take a serious look at the Raven Z case. There are numerous reviews and a thread at ocn that deal with it. The most important feat is its ability to fit a full size gfx card.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1466816/silverstone-raven-rvz01-ml07-ml08-ftz01-owners-club
I'd try to get as much as possible gfx-wise, since its supposed to be a gaming machine.
I'm on my phone right now, so no longer explanations possible.

You'll always have lower price/performance the more performance you get. Maybe you should just look at what FPS you want for the games you play and fit it in your budget. Its supposed to be a gaming machine, not a stutterfest machine. Stop turning around every cent. :-p

Ok, it seems you are all set, then get at least the 750 ti. https://geizhals.de/zotac-geforce-gtx-750-ti-zt-70603-10m-a1089812.html
This one seems to be cheap enough. Edit: is it too big?
Also dont buy from Amazon. I usually get my stuff from hardwareversand.de but you need to pick it over geizhals to get the best price iirc.
This one seems good enough aswell: http://geizhals.de/eu/kfa-geforce-gtx-750-ti-oc-low-profile-751gh8hx9kxz-75igh8hx9kxz-a1110002.html
Edit: stupid me. Should have read the whole post.

I don't see much wrong with that at all. CPU wise you could look at AMD's APUs around that price (A8 7600 from the top of my head); for gaming the CPU has enough grunt (don't need Intel for that here) but from an HTPC perspective the integrated GPU in it is great. Means the 750 Ti doesn't have to do shit then, keeps it a bit more quiet

Ask them to send it with hermes. You'll have lots of fun trying to figure out which part they broke during delivery

Nice one! Somehow I missed this thread.
May I ask why you went with an i3 CPU? Was it for price considerations or thermal outprint? To me, it seems a little less future proof.

Most games live most comfortably in the 4 core zone currently. That i3 is a dual core with HT, which helps, but not really. There are already some games that can take advantage of more, such as Elite Dangerous, and Rome 2. I am not sure an fps/$ graph should be the only consideration, especially of you don't mind spending some more bucks.

For those, sounds OK. Post pics when you build it.
