I watched Escape from NY a week ago. Except few scenes - this movie was a poor attempt at B movies (read: crap). Really rewatch it and disillusion yourself from the nostalgia.
I can't see how remake could be any better.

Why is that whenever someone uses the word nostalgia, it is always in correlation with them acting like their opinion is fact?

Come on. When was the last time you have seen it? I was a little twat when I've seen Escape and the thing I remembered was Snake being bad ass and the "computer" view of NY.

Though it has been rumored to be in the works for years, the remake of "Escape from New York" has never actually been setup at a studio - until now. 20th Century Fox has reportedly won a competitive bidding war to bring us a new version of John Carpenter's iconic 1981 sci-fi classic.
Kurt Russell starred in the original as Snake Plissken, a criminal tasked with rescuing the President of the United States after the downing of Air Force One. The President's escape pod landed on Manhattan Island, which has been converted to a maximum security prison completely run by the criminals that inhabit it. Adding to the complications, Snake has one day in which to get him back - otherwise he'll be killed by a poison in his system.
John Carpenter will return to this new project as an executive producer, and will provide creative input for what Fox hopes will be a reinvention that will launch a new franchise featuring the new Snake.
No cast or director is in place yet. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing.
"Luther" creator and "Mama" writer Neil Cross has come onboard to work on the script for "Escape from New York," the upcoming remake of the 1981 John Carpenter cult classic at 20th Century Fox.
The story is set in a future where Manhattan Island has been walled off and turned into a maximum security prison. When Air Force One is attacked, an escape pod containing the President of the United States crashes into the decaying city.
An outlaw by the name of Snake Plissken is recruited into traveling inside to rescue him and is given 24 hours to locate and retrieve the President who has become a hostage in the hands of the prison's most dangerous kingpin.
Fox has been trying to remake the property for some time, Gerard Butler was attached to play Plissken in a previous version, and they are said to be aiming high with this version which they hope will do "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" style business. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing
So, will Channing Tatum end up playing Snake, or will they go with a female Snake and cast Melissa McCarthy?

It turns out that 20th Century Fox’s upcoming remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic “Escape From New York” isn’t a remake at all.
The Wrap and Bloody Disgusting report that the film will actually be a prequel that aims to complement the Kurt Russell-led classic.
Set in canon, they suggest the prequel is more akin to the recent “Planet of the Apes” films in that it’s setting up potentially more films that ultimately lead into the classic film. “Luther” creator Neil Cross has come onboard as writer and delivered his first draft in late October.
In this version Snake’s real name is Colonel Robert ‘Snake’ Plissken’. The villain of the piece is apparently an agrochemical and biotech corporation heir named Thomas Newton. Also New York City isn’t a maximum security prison, rather a towering city of glass controlled by an AI named April.
The world around it isn’t so serene, many are refugees. In this version Snake’s mission is to bring in Newton alive and he only has eleven hours to complete his mission. There’s also a natural disaster named Superstorm Ellery on the way.

“Upgrade” writer/director Leigh Whannell has set to pen the upcoming remake of the John Carpenter classic “Escape From New York” reports THR.
The original was set in a future where the U.S. had become a totalitarian theocratic police state and the island of Manhattan is now a walled-off maximum security prison. Imprisoned former Special Forces officer Robert ‘Snake’ Plissken (Kurt Russell) has twenty-four hours to go in, rescue the U.S. President who is being held by the city prison’s most dangerous crook, and get out again.
Whannell’s vision for the film will reportedly retain elements of the original while also bringing new ideas to the table, trying to avoid the problems of remakes like “Total Recall” and “Robocop”. He replaces “Luther” creator Neil Cross who was previously attached.
There’s no plan in place for Whannell to direct at this point. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce.
The reboot/remake process is hitting already at script stage. When a script is near completion a reboot/remake of that will take place instead of filming it.

A little over a year ago came word that he had been hired to pen the remake of John Carpenter’s iconic classic “Escape From New York” at 20th Century Studios. Set in a future where Manhattan had been turned into an island-sized maximum-security prison, Kurt Russell starred in the original as the outlaw Snake Plissken who is forced to go inside and rescue the U.S. President who crash-landed there.
Speaking with JoBlo this week, the “Upgrade” helmer was asked about the possibility of casting Russell’s son Wyatt Russell. The younger Russell has been making a name for himself in recent years with AMC’s “Lodge 49” series and the Nazi zombie thriller “Overlord,” and he’ll soon have a high-profile role as US Agent/John Walker in the Disney & Marvel series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”.
Whannell says Wyatt’s casting could well happen as it “seems like the obvious thing to win the fans over”. He then goes on to explain the difficulty in adapting such a classic:

That is an iconic character and I think that Snake Plissken is a part of people’s childhood and their adolescence. It’s near and dear to them. So I would tread very carefully with that. I feel like a property like that doesn’t have the same freedom as maybe something like ‘The Invisible Man’ does. He has more elasticity as a character because so many people have had their fingerprints on that. There’s been TV shows and comic books, whereas with Escape from New York, we’re talking about one definitive movie here and you don’t want to mess with it. We’ll see what happens.”
Whannell says the plan is to avoid the ‘bloated tentpole remake path’ which plagued movies like the “Robocop” and “Total Recall” reboots. Whannell doesn’t have a deal to direct at present.

Zack Snyder Tackling Reimagining of John Carpenter’s ‘Escape From New York’
StudioCanal and the Picture Company are behind the hot package which is being taken out to studios and streamers.
The singular filmmaker behind 300 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League has come aboard to write and direct a reimagining of Escape from New York, the classic dystopian action movie from John Carpenter that introduced audiences to the cool, eye-patch-wearing, cobra-tatted anti-hero, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The feature project is being put together and will be taken out to market in the coming weeks, and marks the first concrete steps of getting an Escape from New York movie up and going in years. And the intent is to release the feature theatrically, according to sources.
The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce through their overall deal with StudioCanal, which along with Carpenter, controls the underlying rights to the property.
Snyder will also produce, alongside his Stone Quarry production company partners Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. Carpenter is also involved with update, serving as executive producer.
