Outerra Tech Demo
Free tech demo, upgradable to the Anteworld sandbox game (alpha)
Outerra Engine is a unique world rendering engine capable of seamlessly rendering whole planets from space down to ground level. It can use real world data to render the planets realistically, while also dynamically refining the data using procedural algorithms to provide high ground-level detail.
The engine provides unlimited visibility obstructed only by the planet's curvature, with details ranging from thousands of kilometers down to centimeters. Real time atmospheric rendering, oceans with shore waves.
It can integrate vector data overlays for roads, and land class modifications. Uses the JSBSim Flight Dynamics Model library for high fidelity simulation of aircraft, and Bullet physics engine for simulation of vehicle physics. Terrain and fractal algorithms maximally utilize the GPU, leaving the CPU resources for simulation.
Hardware requirements
Outerra engine runs on OpenGL 3.3 and requires recent graphics drivers. It will warn you if your drivers are outdated, or even refuse to run in case you've got old ATI drivers that are known not to work at all.
The minimum requirements are:
Nvidia 8xxx series or better, AMD/ATI 5xxx or better with recent AMD/ATI drivers (older ATI series are no longer supported by AMD and their legacy OpenGL drivers are buggy)
512MB GPU memory
a 2-core CPU
Recommended:
Nvidia 460GTX or better, ATI 6850 or better
1GB GPU memory
ATI/AMD - there are still some driver stability issues on some ATI/AMD cards when running Outerra, caused by the drivers not being in the right state. Catalyst installer apparently can't install new drivers cleanly in some cases, and an uninstall and clean sweep of the driver remnants is often required. If you are getting a repeated old driver version warning, crashes at startup or stability problems with one of the supported AMD/ATI cards (5000+ series), please run the clean reinstall procedure.
Intel graphics is not yet supported, we are working with Intel OpenGL team to resolve the driver and program issues preventing Outerra to run on Intel chipsets that should be capable of running it (Ivy Bridge HD 4000 and HD 2500).
Download
Download links for the Outerra tech demo, upgradable in-game to the Anteworld sandbox game (alpha):
-A complete, real scale planet Earth that can be explored
-Created from real elevation data with resolution 90m where available, 1km resolution for oceans; data are dynamically downloaded as you go
-Further refined by fractal-based procedural techniques down to centimeter-level details
-Vector-based road system that integrates with the procedurally generated terrain
-Adjustable lighting and environment parameters
The demo comes with the whole planet Earth that can be explored in a free-camera (UFO) mode or in a testing vehicle (8-wheeler truck). There's also a first person walking mode.
Full version
After upgrading to the full version (alpha, $15, access to all further versions), the following additional features become available:
Road and runway editor
Editor for placing static objects
Additional vehicles - aircraft driven by the JSBSim flight dynamics engine
Model importer for static objects, ground vehicles and aircraft
Ability to export and share mods with others
Dynamic terrain deformation (craters)
People who like it and/or want to support us and the development of Outerra engine can buy the alpha release of Anteworld at a discounted price ($15), half the amount for the final release. Doing so will give you access to regularly released alpha/beta updates of the game, together with the final version when it's done. The price will gradually rise with each major release.
You will also become our beta-testers, with ability to influence the priorities of the development.
The full game includes more vehicles, allows you to use vehicle mods made by users, a basic sandbox tool set allowing you to create roads and runways and place stock or imported objects. A model importer and vehicle configurator enables you to create custom models and vehicles and share it with others. It also enables you to play with dynamic terrain deformation (craters) and more things being regularly released. Changelog for the active version can be found here.
The demo contains a few locations around the world (a couple of them were created by our tester Pico). Data for the default location are already included within the installer, the rest of it will be downloaded automatically on demand as you explore the world (note: proxy servers aren't supported yet for data download). The total size of the data is around 12GB, but normally you'll download just a fraction of the size, unless you traverse the whole planet surface at a low altitude.
Limitations of current alpha state of the technology
This alpha release comes out to show the potential of the engine, but it still lacks many features commonly found in other engines, and especially the effects are postponed until the major features are implemented.
The demo currently comes with just a single biome - northern type forests. There are no rivers and lakes implemented yet, and no weather yet.
Almost all the areas are work in progress.
Known Issues
The alpha state of the engine also means that it's not very optimized yet. It consumes more GPU memory than it should, and spends some time rendering things that is not eventually visible etc.
Windows XP (32bit): Because of a lower and fixed limit on available system memory for GPU transfers on 32-bit Windows XP you may encounter a not-enough memory problem. In this case please close all other apps, especially browsers and other apps that consume a lot of NP (non-paged) memory as shown in the Task Manager.
Driver issues: Please check the Graphics driver issues topic to resolve the most common issues with the drivers.
Anteworld game
Anteworld* is a world-building game on a massive true-to-life scale of our planet. Returning aboard an interstellar colonizer ship built in the Golden Age of Mankind, players arrive on the planet earth to discover civilization and humanity vanished. They will have to rebuild the civilization - exploring, fighting, and competing for resources while searching for clues to the disappearance of humanity.
The game will contain several modes, the basic one will be a single-player game but with player-built locations being synchronized and replicated between clients. That means player can settle in a free location of his choice where he can build and play, and when he goes exploring he'll be able to observe and visit other sites where other players are building their world.
There's going to be also a multiplayer mode for gaming in the existing world.
Sim-connect mode should allow to use Anteworld as an image generator for another simulation program.
In fact, Anteworld is meant to create the basis for an Outerra game/sim platform, allowing to create mods and new game modules that would run on the existing backend.

Retreating isn't an option captain Zmed, you need to find a way out of this black hole all by yourself. But is it worth it? I say nope!
Try Orbiter, Universe Sandbox and Celestia too if you haven't already
Orbiter? Kidding me? I've been hauling space station parts with that to Mars and Jupiter since 2003.
When I had more time I used to be a huge sim aficionado (now I'm more..casual..ugh I hate this word). I've spent so many afternoons playing Falcon 4.0, SH and Orbiter in a row
Imagine combining this engine with the I-Novae engine (Infinity) engine
I'd have more faith in this than I would in I-Novae, Infinity, or anything else they touch. They haven't produced much in the last what, six or seven years, beyond their grand plan for a pseudo Elite style clone in MMOG or MOBA skin.

Outerra haven't produced much as well, besides tech demo in what... 2 years? I don't even remember when I was footage from alpha and tried it myself.
They have that tech demo as well as many demonstration videos. Yeah, several are relatively old but they have one or two relatively recent ones as well. The point is at least they have *something* to show.
Those other guys have nothing but a shitty website, some screenshots, a forum 90% full of completely unrelated topics, and the promise of a kickstarter (big surprise, please give us money) for some battle arena type game. Oh joy.

I think you got the wrong game in your mind
Infinity is far from "some battle arena type game"
But yeah, he's taking his time.. But AFAIK, he's the only one working on it with some help from the community... That kickstarter should had happened a long time ago already
It's one of a few wip projects that i actually really look forward to playing it.

I don't doubt that, but my point is that these engine projects usually die as a simple "engine projects" and there is a bunch of reasons why.

No, I'm not thinking of some other game. I think he realized that he'll never get it done without help so their first game is going to be Infinity: Battlescape.
Quote:
Among those plans were a focus on a multiplayer combat version of the original sandbox concept called Infinity: Battlescape. This caused a bit of an uproar in the game's community due to a desire to see the devs move forward with the larger sandbox instead of what some fans see as a combat prototype.
Quote:
This week I-Novae's Keith Newton published another post to make the case for Battlescape and illustrate why it's important for the larger project. He draws several comparisons to EVE Online and says that "we would have to have one of the most successful campaigns in the history of Kickstarter for us to be able to build a minimally viable Infinity.
Those posts are from march of this year. Maybe he's flip-flopped since then and now thinks he can actually pull off the original plan.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the full sandbox Elite style game they want to make. But, honestly, he comes off to me like another Derek Smart.
Ah my bad, i didn't actually keep myself fully up-to-date with his latest developments..
That's a damn shame.. He really should had gone kickstarter and get Infinity done..

That's not what I meant. The technology itself no longer impressive. We already saw that indie spacesim which provided incredible fidelity for both space and planets and seamless landing to the planets or asteroid (I forgot title, there is only one video 16 minutes long recorded with shareware FRAPS), we also have No Mans' Sky.
Whatever they are doing is now something usual. And that is done by indie devs. Imagine some big publishers will put some money into in in 2-3 years. Do you think they are going to license Outerra? Lel. i think it will quietly die.
it wasnt meant as a response to your post I meant in general, tech demos doesnt say shit since they lack AI and scripts. We've seen it so many times how tech demos of games looks great and then the graphics are scaled back tremendously because the derp devs doesnt understand that AI and scripts affects performance in a BIG way and i guess sometimes the tech demos are just meant to trick people to think the end result will look just as spectacular.
