I've got time.
I'd rather make an actual upgrade than just switching out two cards for one. ^_^

Not only it beats it but it is cheaper.Yeah, 980 is less power hungry, but who cares about that if you can buy hardware at such prices? Technically speaking 980 is not a high end card however price wise it is.
Although it is really impressive that a middle-end card in many tests faster than a previous generation high end amd's card , I'd say Nvidia got way, way greedy.

What? The GTX980 beats 290X in pretty much every single test.

Boy, exaggerating is also an art
Same can be said about the 780 Ti. A 780 Ti only sits up to 25W below a 290X, in many tests they're pretty much equal. Everyone always acts like the 290X is like a GTX 480 when it comes to consumption compared to its competitors, but that's hardly the case. Heck, even the 780 still only sits 50W below a 290X. Or 15-20% less if you want percentages, which falls perfectly in line with the performance difference.
Not sure what graphs Kein is looking at though

If you have last gen cards, those new ones arent upgrades unless you have money to waste, then go ahead, not like 990 titan or w/e coming in December.

All I could find and take a look at before jumping into conclusions:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-970-maxwell,3941-10.html
http://www.ixbt.com/video3/gm204-part3.shtml
In most cases 980 goes toe to toe with R9 290X or the latter beats it (with just few cases where 980 leads). What is really funny, Radeon often beats GF in 4k tests, where new 980 supposed to rule.
I mean like, wtf. Sure as hell it is impressive upgrade compare to 680, but the only difference between 780Ti and 980 is power consumption pretty much. Flagman of the new generation can't achieve clean victory not just against top card of the rival, but against top card of his own previous generation. And don't get me even started on prices comparison of these cards, lel.
And where in the hell my 20nm. What the fuck, nvidia.
And we haven't seen next gen cards from AMD yet. If you take a look in perspective at these "new gen cards" - it is laughable to be honest.

That's the whole point. technically it's hardly a flagman. Check these two cards specs.
Remember what was the deal with geforce 680? Same story here.

It was practically a buffed in certain parts (as in MMORPGs lol) mid range card sold as a high end. End of story

We knew ages ago that 20nm wasn't happening soon and we also knew Maxwell wasn't about performance. Performance per transistor is a little better, but not fantastic. You gotta keep in mind that you have to compare this chip to GK104, the 680 and 770 - not the 780's. And compared to those, it gets its performance increase from the bigger die, not from the architecture.
That said, Tom's Hardware hasn't been good for reviews in years. Their testing is very inconsistent and their test suite is weird to say the least. If you look on other sites, on average the 980 sits a good 15% above a 290X, 10% above a 780 Ti. That coming from a 400mm^2 chip is pretty good. Basically what Nvidia built here is the same thing AMD did with Hawaii (take their 300mm^2 chip and expand it), with the main difference in performance being that AMD still managed to cram more GPGPU power in that 400 millimeters. What Nvidia did however, was to drastically cut down the power consumption. AMD's Hawaii is nothing compared to GM204 on that front. And AMD could've used it there.
And no, this was never going to be a 4K monster. A 256-bit bus isn't enough for that. The new colour compression will allow better use of such a narrow bus, but 4K requires lots and lots of bandwidth. A stock 290 has 320 GB/s of bandwidth versus the 224 on a 980 so 4K hurts it a lot less simply because it almost has 50% more bandwidth. A 250 MHz (20%) bump on a 290's memory clock puts it at 384 GB/s; bumping a 980 by 250 MHz (14%) only gets it to 256 GB/s.
I said it in the GPU thread too, but next year's gonna be the big one. This die (Nvidia claim 398mm^2, but it's been measured at 416mm^2 so I'll use that figure, since that figure's what's been measured in the same way for other chips) would shrink to about 212mm^2 on just a standard 20nm HP process already. Now add FINFETs to that and it'll shrink further; it won't be as good as a true 16nm HP process (which would put it at 135mm^2), but it'll probably be enough to shrink this fucker down to 160mm^2 or so. And that is right in the zone of the 260X and 750 Ti. That means that if things go the way they should, next year we'll get this kind of performance out of a fucking 120 EUR chip. And that is pretty astonishing.

To be honest, the TurfEffects stuff is more of a game changer than the Fur stuff from HairWorks. It doesn't matter what game you pick up and play these days, grass always looks terrible and has the worst ranged LOD that constant "pops in" all the time. If they can get this Turf stuff working properly without being another PhysX-level system rape bullshit, then it will radically change how many games look and feel.
