If you know a little western history, you'd knew what to expect Wink ever heard of the term "a dead man's hand"? 2 pair, aces and eights, that was (allegedly) Hickok's hand when he got shot.
I knew how he died, just not where, but when he started playing those card games, I figured it out quickly enough.

I used to watch plenty of old-kick ass westerns back when I was kid, because my father enjoyed all of them.

It has been good 10yrs since I watched my last western-movie. Never knew this was based on real-life events. Pretty cool, I must say. Perhaps one of these days I will bug my father to tell me if he remembers any westerns at all.

But so far show is good!

So apparently there is a show called Deadwood, and i love western movies/series. Weird i didn't hear of this until now.

Without spoiling, did it have a proper ending? Or was it just canceled with several open plots?

There are several open plots, yeah, altough most of the important plotlines were resolved. It will leave you wanting for more though.

I've been watching Deadwood in the last 2 weeks, midway into S2 now. I can't find words to express how fucking good this is Very Happy It's so well written, directed, produced and has such great performances, all which seemed impossible to accomplish at the same time. Al Swearengen is now without shadow of a doubt the best character I've ever seen on television. I wish Ian McShane could keep playing him for eternity. The attention to detail in the show is mesmerizing, the situations are non-stop engaging and intriguing. Lots of really interesting characters (Olyphant isn't that good in here though but I like his character which is still a real badass), the ensemble of women in the show might well be one of the best in any series I've invested time in. The historical backdrop and the wild west setting are enormously interesting. And about emotions, it has them all in the same package, even the humor is fantastic, it was a long time since I genuinely laughed (and not once, nor twice but multiple times) while watching a series that wasn't a sitcom, I think the last time was in S4 of Justified with Constable Bob and the "Yolo" affair Laughing And yeah I fucking figured I would find here a video of Al and Wu scenes which I was commenting earlier today to Vechter how hilariously great they were Very Happy And that's only to name an example.

Anyway I must stop now cause I could go on all night describing all that is good about Deadwood. I'm halfway into the whole thing and I'm gonna try to savour every remaining episode till it ends Crying or Very sad

I'm seriously starting to doubt if this isn't gonna end up being my favourite tv show ever over The Wire Okay

It problably won't... because of how it ends Sad It's not a terribly bad ending, but it leaves a void of "fuck, there should've been more" and you leave the show feeling it wasn't complete. Still - I envy you, getting to experience Deadwood for the first time Very Happy

As for the wild west setting - that's HBO for you Very Happy Motherfuckers practically built the damn town Laughing

Absolutely loved that show, and your take on it is spot on. Halfway the S2 I found out there was never going to be a third and I was already throwing cocksuckers around :/

Ah, Swearengen and Wu classic comedy Very Happy

If you want a modern day western feel, give Longmire a try.
It's a simple formula but it has a weird charm to it.
Small town sheriff in a weird space between the past and the present.
Also, Starbuck.

Don't count on it. Years ago there was a lot of news about HBO making a Rome movie and it never happened.

So Much Win

Quote:
"Deadwood" Movie Is Definitely Happening
It's real. The VERY long awaited "Deadwood" movie is happening at HBO. Speaking at the Television Critics Association's press tour on Thursday, HBO's programming president Michael Lombardo tells TV Line that it's definitely happening.

In August last year, HBO confirmed early talks of a film continuation/wrap-up of the cancelled but beloved and highly acclaimed western series. Since then, series creator David Milch has apparently come up with a story that the network was happy enough with that Lombardo personally gave Milch the green light:

"David has our commitment that we are going to do it. He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be - and knowing David, that could change. But it's going to happen."

The revival comes from a "palpable" sense that Milch "has something left unsaid... I've known him for a while and it feels like it's something he's not done talking about" according to Lombardo.

So when will also this happen? Milch is currently working on another project: "But the understanding is that when he is done with that he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film." What about getting that stellar cast back together?

"I'm going to leave that in David's hands. He's confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them."
