Thats the best case money can buy, get that for your gaming pc and you'll never want any other case.
It's expensive though. |
Best in what way? I want a silent case. Also, from pics I don't see very good cable management solution inside.

It's the airflow oriented "brother" of the Define series, but it's not quiet enough. The question is, does the R4 provide enough airflow to overclock a Haswell E with H105, and one or two 970/980/Titan ZOMG/AMD Neveragain. |
You can always change the fans, i have AF140 quiet editions in my Mini and its dead silent |
I wonder if it's just the fans, or other features such as rubber and foams they use to isolate vibrations and noise. If I hear my older mechanical drives screech in the new PC, I'd go nuts!

Also that H105 is very noisy if you want good performance out of it, its going to have hard time with Haswell-E on stock fans with low fanspeed if you want silent PC. I would buy something like NH-D15 for the cooling if you want very silent operation and strong cooling.

R4 uses some cheap ass foam, its not that good, its the fans that are very silent, but they are very bad in moving air (had those same shit fans in my Mini, their air moving capabiilities are as good as 90 year old grandpa with lung cancer).

I already have NH-D14. What I don't like is currently how difficult it is to clean it for dust.
Does the Mini R2 have dust protection? I tend to run my machine 24/7 and it does tend to take a lot of dust.

You sure? o.0
My R3 doesn't have cheap ass foam. It comes with quite dense noise reduction material, almost rubber like (some sort of bitumen). I'd be surprised if they'd change that on the R4.
You did touch/had one yourself right?

Aye, reason I'm doubting his statement. I would think people would bitch right away if they changed to something worse. It's one of the big selling points.
Can't hear a peep compared to my fiancees (shitty) case, which is more noisy than an active fridge ffs xD

There is also the H440 (it was mentioned here also), but I don't think it's as elegant as the Define R4.

I don't think going closed loop is the best and cheapest idea.
Something like macho 120 or 140 would be as good as h60/80 maybe and quieter + cheaper. I have macho 120 and its very quiet. 2500k at 4.5 is 35 on desktop and up to 60 in stress. I think it's a good performance.
and bigger macho would fit in r3/r4

You can't really go wrong with Fractal or NZXT. I've handled an R3, R4, Mini R2 from Fractal. From NZXT the Phantom, H440, Switch 810, Source 210. Each and every one of them delivers for their price range. The majority have dust filters, that's kind of a standard feature on both brands. For the most part, either solid metal work or a hard polymer (plastic ) that's durable as shit (my Phantom is 4 years old now and I challenge anyone to find anything wrong with it, despite all my fiddling).
Corsair's Carbide series is not bad either, but compared to the other two a little less refined and a little more expensive for comparable models. Their 200R however is the best in its class though. For under 50 EUR that thing is fantastic.
As for your dilemma between the R4 and H440 Leo: simply check reviews. I've used both with closed loop liquid coolers, but depending on what specific cooler you go with, the H440 may be a little easier, NZXT spaced things just a little different (probably with said coolers in mind). Again, check reviews and photos, but you can't go wrong with either, it's more personal preference than anything else

They both look similar to me with cooler placement "optimal" position - the top, and both have the same space (i.e. h100i/h105 fit, the h110 does not). On the other hand I do prefer the R4's more elegant build, their HDD tray is fantastic, cable management looks bette and overall aesthetically I think it looks better.

Go with the R4 then
Although with the space, I'm talking millimeters. Like having certain rails etcetera shifted a few mm and such, which often is just enough to make things fit a little better
Best to find photos of a build with a H100i in it and compare as far as that aspect is concerned

I am looking to find people with x99 configurations in an R4 indeed. It seems duable, but I guess it depends on the motherboard.
I am also not sure between H105 and the Kraken models. No idea why I have a preference for the Corsair, could be irrational.

It is irrational as far as the brand goes, because neither NZXT nor Corsair actually build it, in both cases it comes from Asetek. The radiator designs come from NZXT and Corsair, still manufactured by Asetek in the end - pump is all Asetek's. That said, the H105 has a thicker radiator and thus will be more effective at cooling that high TDP of your desired CPU
And the motherboard won't be much of a factor, unless you pick one with giant heatsinks or one that isn't (m)ATX

Most motherboards look so retarded! All the stupid colors and crazy shapes and all...
I mean, am I the only one that sees this as elegant:
http://www.asus.com/Commercial_Servers_Workstations/X99E_WS/
Of course, it comes at a higher price and lower quality onboard audio. (My X-Fi is PCI).

How often do you look at your motherboard once it's inside the case?
It's like all the people who start shoving in all the florescent lights into the chassi because it's 'cool'.
Never understood that.
Edit:
Also to add further, I don't know how the new FD cases are but on my black pearl the audio jacks died twice where I got a replacement part for them. Third time's the charm I guess.

I'm not seeing much of a change, some different bundles have appeared though (32 and 64 GB kits.) and speed varies from 2133 Mhz up to 2666 Mhz with a few "enthusiast" kits going over the 3000 Mhz range.
I guess it's the same as DDR3 with the very high speed kits having poorer timings but I don't have the knowledge to say if that means anything, maybe the brute speed more than makes up for the laxer timings.
Power usage seems to be 1.2 to 1.35v, quite a difference from my first DDR3 kit which ran best at 2.00 (First generation DDR3) and was certified up to 2.10 (Still going strong in my old PC which is now my sisters.) and price wise DDR4 seems much cheaper than when DDR3 launched and now it's 8 to 16 GB that's common instead of 4 GB.
(Should have checked what price level DDR3 is currently at come to think of it.)
EDIT: Personally I'd say 16 GB is more than enough for the next few years unless you're doing heavier work or what to call it, speed wise I'm unsure but I wonder if there's any noticeable change between these high-speed kits besides benchmark programs so I'd probably try to find a kit with decent timings though probably a bit higher clocked than default.
I have no idea about manufacturing quality and other vendor specific issues or other problems, been using Corsair lately myself but it's probably not a huge difference there besides some cooler designs.
(Besides the usual fact that more known brands tend to be carrying a price premium.)

Thanks JB
I am too unsure about how speeds actually matter these days. I have picked up the search for hardware again now, and was wondering if there is anything new.

I think most of the memory speeds really only benefit if you're running AMD's APUs, something to do with sharing video memory or some shit. Any other application I really doubt you'll see any actual gains other than maybe a second faster here and there.
I noticed above a mention of the NZXT Switch 810. Of all the cases I've owned, even the Lian Li's, Corsair 800D, the Switch is by far the best case I've ever owned and worked with. It's mostly modular, most everything inside is held together by little screws instead of rivets, so if there's something in the way of you wanting to build a certain way, you can easily take it out. As for room, plenty and then some. I've got a custom loop + 2 radiators in it and still enough room to add mroe if I wanted to. Back side has a really nice gap as well to hide cables.

A power outage yesterday killed my PC so this is what I have right now:
5960X / 5930K - No decision made yet
Asus X99 Deluxe
Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x4 2666 or 2800, whatever they have in stock
2 x Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming - I read they are good overlockers, so I will like them probably
Corsair HX1000i - Paul just want to have the headroom to connect all my HDDs, overlock the CPU and GPUs
Define R5
Corsair H110 - There is no Kraken X61 here in Israel, so I will do with H110

Well, I do want to play what I do play on my native 2560x1440 or more when I get a new display down the road. The 680 is no longer holding it at 1080p. Now, not even one single 980 can run demanding games at these resolutions, while two 970s are the same price almost as 980.
