Aside from the "when one server loves another server very much..." story.. I am curious as to where all these gaming servers come from these days...
Why do people have so much bandwidth, and how in the hell can they afford to run them?
Even if I wanted to host something out where I live, it just isn't an option, no ISP provides anything better than cable with weak upload, and if I did push for something custom, it'd be like hundreds of dollars a month.
Yet we see 34589340985034534 counter-strike servers, 4590384583094 battlefield 2 servers, etc, etc, etc...
Who the hell is providing bandwidth? and how can all these people afford such things?
The only way I've ever seen that makes any sense is the server rental businesses out there, but they are so damn expensive, how do people fund that crap? I don't imagine many people do them, or am I wrong? Besides, it always takes them too long to update their services to host new games.
So if anyone could enlighten me to the world of servers and such, I'd appreciate it.

Most people use hosting companies like Jolt and Multiplay (european examples) who host their servers at major data centres like Redbus, which is plugged directly into the backbone of the internet and has unlimited bandwith.
These companies are not damn expensive, they are quite allright if you got a job. For kids, however, they might seem expensive.
Of course, there are always private people on 10mbit and whatnot who host their own servers.
I'm sure somebody can give an even more extensive explaination than mine.

Don't believe them Stooz. It's the magical server fairy with her magic glittery bandwidth dust. She's related to the tooth fairy but they're so busy they've never actually met.

There are tons of hosting companies who specialize in providing gameservers or have daughter companies who do that. There's a lot of money to be made in providing services for gamers. Apart from gameservers, they usually provide a bit of webspace to host a clanpage and offer things like voice servers and bouncers.

1mbit/s upload is more than enugh to provide -100 ping 18 player servers. And alot of people in the EU have 8mbit/s download 1mbit/s upload, at a cheaper price than the lower speeds.

For example in sweden broadband is very cheap. i got 10Mbit both ways and i pay 195SEK per month, thats around 16euro or so and around $24US ... and these connections are availible for MANY people all around sweden from various ISPs.. Bredbandsbolaget is even raising all their fibreconnections to 100/10 for 395SEK a month..

So people can shell out $300 per month for these things? That seems ridiculous to me, even for people with jobs.

i know alot of people who are organized in "clans", and those clans usually have the members pay a monthly fee so they can get game servers for their clan. Easiest way. Although i dislike clans

Can you please send an email to my isp with your speeds, price, etc? I pay almost double for 1mbit/128kbits...
