Can't you opt out of the monster role? My impression is that most people want to play as the monsters.

Well, playing as the monster is ideal for someone who doesn't have gamer friends to play as hunters. Playing with randoms as teammates is just as bad as it was in L4D games.

I'd say playing with randoms is actually even worse in Evolve due to the class roles unlike in L4D series where each character plays the same.

I think you could do some really good trolling in Evolve by putting shields up all the time and trapping everyone away from the monster. Someone should do it and make a video.

I'm having an absolute blast with this, a lot more than I thought I would. So far I've only played as the Monster but it's genuinely interesting and enjoyable .. I lost my first 2 games but then, as I started getting to grips with the various abilities and restrictions, I've won 4 in a row Very Happy Wiping out a single Hunter in one go is definitely the best way, rather than battling and trying to flee, because you can weaken their team immensely with just a few attacks -- and then leg it to feed and regain health Very Happy

Every game the monster downs/kills the medic first, it wins, in my experience. I'm terrible at both the monsters and hunters though, but yes, it seems straight forward for the monster. Just focus on doing damage to a selected hunter at a time. Very Happy

If I'm Medic, I know now that most Monsters know to kill me first. They see the big-ass green beam and there's no problem identifying who the medic is. If I run out of jet pack fuel its really tough to get away and survive once the monster player decides to go only after me.

Played few more hours today and finally understood what Evolve was aiming for in gameplay part - the Monster play. The better monster at playing the more intense and interesting game is, especially if forces from both sides are more or less equal in experience. Today I played with team of guys who weren't super-good but knew what they were doing and the Monster guy was on a similar level as well and damn we had so much fun. He barely won in the end but didn't matter, it was fun chasing him and uncovering all his tricks.

What shield? The Mobility Arena? it won't last long.

Not really, it highly depends on the player experience who is playing as monster and even if he is quite experienced - the fight can go different way. Last standing 3 can cut him very well and if there will be only one hunter left he can start running away and hiding, waiting for drops. Monster would need to restore his health first before start hunting for evolution otherwise quickly arrived medic and the last survivor can take him down actually.

I've really been enjoying this, quite a lot, and it's one of the few games where I actually feel like I'm going to miss it when the alpha/beta is over. Traversal is a pain in the arse, especially against a skilled Hunter team, because they almost always know exactly where you are and where you've been Sad Sneaking is a temporary measure at best and its slow movement speed means you get caught up really easily and quickly by the freakishly fast hunters.

Still, it's a blast and I haven't even played as a Hunter yet Very Happy

Oh and yes, loading times are ABYSMAL.

Honestly I think I spent more time on loading screens and waiting for the fucking lobby to tick down to zero than I did playing.

The default monster is piss-weak, even going against a team of people who haven't the slightest what they're doing.

The next monster (the floaty kraken thingy) one shot kills you with whatever it is he shoots out (ball of rape? ).

So yea, not the slightest semblance of balance in the game at the moment at all.

I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I'm not buying the full version. €60 for a multiplayer game? No thanks Razz I'm only playing the alpha because it's free and the Monster mode sounded interesting - turns out it's incredibly fun, but not €60 fun -- and there's no way €60 worth of content in this, €20 maybe, but not €60. I want to fully explore the Monster first, the Hunter stuff is all about teamwork and chatting.. meh.. no thanks.

The loading screens are absolutely terrible, they really are beyond stupid. As for the starting monster Goliath? Only his 1st stage is weak, stages 2 and 3 are really powerful - and FAST too Very Happy I've not unlocked Kraken yet (strange, since I've 1-star mastered all the abilities, which is supposedly the unlock condition) but I'm looking forward to trying it.

Sooo I spent all night downloading it, come to test it now only to get an error when trying to start it. Turns out you need a 64bit OS to even run the game.

Okay and done, uninstalled Smile 4 hours of that is plenty, methinks. I've seen and done everything I needed to do, won 30 out of 40 matches, and that's it.. nothing else interests me \o/ Really fun game though and the Kraken is mighty fine to play as Very Happy

I think the game is going to need a lot more maps and a lot more Monsters when it comes out.

how do you remove the 30 fps cap? disabling vsync didnt do it :S

Find system.cfg in the game folder (..\SteamApps\common\Evolve\) and add:
sys_MaxFps XX

where xx is the number,

Also, most of the Crytek commands work. FOV does not, though,

I've had fun playing it even with strangers today, though I know that wouldn't last too long after released. Having a regular group of teammates would be optimal.
