In my experience across multiple forums, "clean slates" end up being the death of forums. Hundreds of thousands of posts, history, threads, all gone? Sites don't recover from that.

Yeah, I'm for importing the data too. There are quite a few useful and funny threads that should survive.

I completely agree. I'd rather not change the theme edit: than lose the content.

The would be the least of problems. He's repeated himself so often, we should be able to recreate them from memory.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

hahaha.. I can see why we'd want to keep it, my worry is the complexity of doing just that. I don't have a clue about the internals of the PHPBB database though, surely they've accounted for this.. Even if you have to go through a number of the PHPBB iterations that's not a massive amount of effort? Doing it manually will be a pain for sure.

If moving data is very difficult, setup two forums. The one we are using now becomes read-only archive with search. New one starts from a clean state.

Clunky ?! Sure... But still better than losing all old posts.

Stop whining you lot, I'll import the data, it never even crossed our minds not to do so. It's just that I may have to "reset" every post in terms of BB code, so that it can parse it fresh, which is what garus did (already aware of that btw garus, but I'd still rather avoid it as it reduces server load somewhat) Wink

Speaking in hypotheticals, let's assume that the template by Inter is already done, how long would it take to import the data and get the forum up and running?

I don't know what this means exactly, but.. sounds good Razz
Thanks guys for all the efforts and time spent on rejuvenating this old tricky beast, really.

I know that it's kinda weird to say, but I very often revisit old threads just to have a laugh and even when I need valuable infos, or just out of curiosity. Getting rid of our history would be like creating the most awesome RPG character ever, and then suddenly lose all the XP points, back to Nameless One status xD

Already in for pretty much any accepted format. I've added a new [media] tag that'll deal with audiovisual formats as well as lots of media sites. YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, Soundcloud - things like that. Just wrap the link in [media] and it'll be embedded if supported Smile

It's mostly Chrome that sucks with MP4. If you have the same file referenced on a page twice, it'll basically block its entire network thread permanently. I need to check if it fails on WebM in the same way, but I assume it does. It's one of those things that should be trivial to fix, but the issue has been around for about 18 months now. That and the fact that Chrome still has some issues with very long MP4 files.

Beyond that, it's mostly FF that still has a few bugs with MP4, but none that we will come across I reckon. Opera doesn't support h264 on OS X.

I've disabled autoplay on all of these, so they won't affect slow connections.
