UGH. So I caved and started applying around for minimum wage jobs to start making some money instead of sitting around being a bum. So I apply to wal-mart, interview goes really well, everything seems to be going well. I used two references on the application, one being a former Junior Computer Programmer position I had until I needed to focus on school for a while. So I get a phone call today from that place that I was doing programming and some web development for, asking if I'd be interested in working as a junior programmer there again.

I mean the decision is pretty obvious to most people. The programming job would pay me a whole lot more, but then theres the commute to take into consideration. But I have to go in for an interview sort of thing on wednesday to the programming place, and it's pretty much a sure in if I want it. I just wish I hadn't done the whole song and dance with Wal-Mart. It's very frustrating.

Walmart is for suckers. Why would you want to work at such a place?

Convenient. And they pay more than the rest of the minimum wage type jobs.

You'd rather be a stock boy/cart pusher than a computer programmer?

I'd say you should do what you like. Why not gain some more work experience in comp programming?

I will take the programming job if I can still get it. I just don't want to say no to wal-mart, and then go into the meeting with the manager and him say they don't want to hire me, and then have no chance at getting the job at wal-mart.

Also, I have no intention of getting into the field. Programming is a hobby if that for me now.

Hey man...there's no shame starting out...seriously. Before i got into my trade, i worked in stores and warehouses and on docks and shit. No shame in doing it and if ur doing physical work, like unloading trailers for wal mart, that is (over the course of the day) hard work. bending, lifting and all that shit, and u got some jerk off manager tellin ya to work quicker...hard work, be proud dude Smile

Unless ur a walmart greeter.....in which case, get a real job Wink Laughing

Yes sir. If I get the programming job, it's going to mean I might actually be able to go back to school next year.

Try to think ahead...5 years from now..

Youve worked at walmart.
You can stack shelves do the crap they ask, if they tell u to get lost u can look for a similar job

Your a programmer
The World is your oyster, maybe not, but better prospects than if u stayed at wallmart.

What pays the most now and is more convienient may turn out worse for you in the future.

Hmmm, when I started out I wanted to work from the bottom. I had shit jobs but it gave me experiance that I needed.

I didnt want to jump to the top as I knew I would be a wanker in not understanding what it's like at the bottom.

Only do the job you want to do, and not what people suggest. I wouldnt want to be a programmer because i find computers a hobby not a job. I'd rather work at a place I enjoyed. money isnt everything.. Smile

Thats my two cents.

Well I'm going to hate pretty much any attainable work right now. Because I've worked at this place in the past, I know what its like. The environment is very laid back, but I'm concerned I won't cut it with my lack of using languages recently. I figure though being a junior programmer I won't be the architect of a major peice of the software, but more a bug fixer and UI modder.

Well if they have the intention of hiring me, I will be working for the programming place. Just so you all know, its http://cratos.ca/hospitality/ where I'd be working. I was actually around before our newest software and that website was even conceived when I was a co-op student.
