gamma is going to last less than a month!
a real shame, as its instability will ruin its good reputation

20:20 onwards just exemplifies everything I despise about online gaming and why I'll be playing offline. I couldn't give two fucks about "dynamic economy" (that just means uberguilds run everything, they're the only ones that profit) - I just want to play the game without being ganked by some troll.

I don't think guilds can really ruin the economy in this game...
But the interdiction thing is a hot topic in the forums right now, being that anyone can interdict anyone at anytime, and without any penalty whatsoever... I think that's a gamebreaking issue right there.

Yep - Voice Attack holds the distinction of being only the second app. I've ever purchased a key for (the first being Newsbin ). That guy is still actively updating that voice pack as I keep getting emails from him every few weeks describing what he'll be adding. Definitely don't regret throwing a few bucks his way.
As for Elite launching mid December, man, I definitely did NOT see that coming. Don't get me wrong, FD have been bang on about adding features and meeting their set dates, but there's just nowhere near enough content implemented yet!
Mining is incredibly basic. Piracy simply does not hold a candle in any way to other methods of earning money (this is largely due to that stupid Cargo Scoop bullshit - that needs to go entirely, or at least have the choice upgrade it with a tractor beam of some sort). The BB missions have no depth to them. The factions aren't implemented (there's no sense of "this section belongs to such and such faction, who doesn't like such and such faction over yonder" etc.).
I went from being all warm and fuzzy towards this to filled with absolute dread (and to be honest, kind of feeling ripped off if THIS is all they plan to have in the game in terms of depth of things to do).
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Yea I can't believe they are releasing this so soon. This could be another Planetary Annihilation. At least I see all the passion from Chris Roberts and the continue stream of money pouring in that I know even when SC 1.0 comes out there will be continued development, Elite don't have that luxury and I fear it won't be good enough.

My thoughts exactly, offline for me it is aswell.
As for the release date i also feel it's far too soon. Should have went for late Q1 2015 or thereabouts but to think the full release is just over a month away is definately cause for concern.
As it stands there is not enough on offer and with the release so soon there is only so much you can add between now and then unless they pull a large rabbit out of the hat.
While features will be added as time progresses some will probably just move on to something else due to lack of depth at launch.

@sabin1981
I'm more of an offline person myself. But will this game have some kind of story or is it just like a huge sandbox where you try making as much money as possible upgrade etc. ?
(Sorry for the stupid question)
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Which is quite a shame. I love the rather dark and somber aesthetics of the world and art design (vs Star Citizen popcorn) and the games engine is also really absolutely amazing. I'm all for keeping elites original sandbox spirit, but having some kind of campaign accompanying the game and introducing its lore would be great.

As far as I'm aware it's just a sandbox with missions but I could be wrong though, so probably best to wait for release and see what happens.

This is more proof that the game far from complete. Now the whole game is PVP online and "high level" fighter ships buly starting players.
Starting systems should be a save haven voor beginning players, low risk/low reward systems just to learn the game and earn money for a real ship. These systems should have more npc's protecting players, or even ban certain ships, strong goverments should be able to prevent pirates roaming there system. Pirates should seek high risk/high reward systems with weaker or absent goverment presence.
An escort mechanic for players would also be nice, so that you can post a job for other players to escort for money.

i'd be heavily surprised if there is even a hint of a cinematic SP campaign in there. Perhaps in a couple of years maybe when they've fleshed out the other mechanics they'll see that having a decent SP campaign would be great way to promote the game beyond the usual space nerd audience.

Haven't been following this title, and know it's multiplayer based, but what can you do alone in this? Just fly around mining, fighting players and trading? No story at all?

It seem its mostly that + from the ED wiki:
"(...) Unlike previous games, the Elite: Dangerous universe will evolve. As players explore the galaxy, the different factions will be seen to spread to further star systems, colonising planets and building space stations.
New star ports will be slowly built in real time. These events will create opportunities for players as the resources and workers required for building will need to be transported and there will no doubt be related military missions and scope for increased piracy. (...)"
Don't know where they are going with it. This Evolving Universe could provide enouf random "story events" that can trigger and shaken the galaxy providing opportunity´s challenges letting the player choose if he wants to follow up or stay away. A war that turns calm sectors in to hostile altering the balance. A new rare ore type discovered starting a gold rush etc, that sorta of thing.

It would seem there is a lot more to come with this game - unlike SC, which is promising the universe and everything in it before release, Braben has basically shown us the game framework, but left everything else a secret - there isn't even any sign of Thargoids, but we know they're in the game as he has stated it on numerous occasions.
Maybe we're so used to being told about every single thing in an unreleased game, that when it doesn't happen, we become suspicious...

Wait, WHAT? It's online only now!? Fucking crooks! As per usual, the slathering fuckboys are all defending and praising it too. Shocking. Totally.

Quote: | The online servers provide all of the data and processing for the galaxy, interactions between players and all transactions of value. Without it there isn't a game. We always intended that the way to play the game would be online. We had hoped that we could do an offline variant, but as the game progressed the online requirement superseded that. It wasn't an easy choice to make, but to stay true to the game we set out to make we had to make this choice.

Fuck you, you thieving fucking crook. My god, the forum is full of the worst kind of blind fanboys -- and I thought RSI was bad, but this... this is terrible. I'm rapidly getting sick of gaming lately, the people infesting it are just fucking awful. I'm sick of gamers who willingly get fucked, over and over and over and over, and STILL defend the companies doing it.
Fuck gamers.

Do note that it's all about having to be connected; it's not about forcing anyone into MP. The whole SP/MP story hasn't changed. It sucks, but at least no one's forced into MP.

They're cowardly fucking scam artists. None of this was known two years ago, a year ago, six months ago or even last fucking week. They had absolutely no intention of offering offline mode and considering this game has a FRACTION of a percentage of the complexity available in Elite 2 Frontier, which was larger and ran on a goddamned 7Mhz/512KB Amiga, then their bullshit about "need servers to calculate blah blah blah" is lying fucking horseshit. It's about as legitimate as EAs claims that Sim City required entire SERVER FARMS to play.
It's all about DRM and anti piracy and has absolutely fucking *nothing* to do with gameplay or experience. It's DRM pure and simple and FDEV fucked everyone by taking funds for a portion of the game they never intended to provide and lying about promises they had no intention of honouring. I'm starting to agree with places like Gamasutra; gamers really are terrible people.
