Proper reaction for a Romanian with someone running towards them at night. I'd have done the same. Gypsy or not. My girlfriend was mugged in broad daylight, fuck that shit, never again.

my case.
1' gypsy alone -> i would move 2-3 steps to the right or left. if he change direction aswell, i usually keep a pepper spray in a pocket. makes wonder with gypsy/dogs. and in my town on the night walk path -> home, i find bears sometimes to. i really hope it will save my ass in case one of them looks hungry at me, but i dont want to find out.
2' unfortunatley more common, group of agressive gypsy. i would just run in case i'm alone. near to my pepper spray i have a opinel #8 knife for the last resort.
one timp a simple cutter saved me for a hard beating or more from 2 gypsy. i just stayed with my back at a wall, and they keeped distance and give up after a while.
since then i always had a pepper spray in my pocket and my opinel near it.

I am actually (that it occurs so openly on this board), since it would be the same as saying: I hate this or that group.
Now... I have experienced some bad 'gypsy' moments, but to condemn an entire group for that. Nah I refuse to. I had met enough good ones to think they are all bad.
What saddens me is eventho you have some hatred in the western countries, that there is such a great hatred with people from the eastern countries. It's also deemed acceptable and to me it sometimes sounds borderline with how they used to talk (some still do) about the Jews, and we know how that turned out.
Now for instance, there have been a lot of problems with Moroccan people in Antwerp and you hear some people have the same rhetoric I hear against gypsies... But it's the same deal for me: why condemn a whole group for some shitheads.
And yes there is the same of unsafe feeling in some parts of the big cities in Belgium... but to bring pepperspray and knives... Just a little bit more and you can run around like Americans with guns and yell: for protectionz!

My father has visited what would best be called a Roma reunion a few years back, in south France. So there were people from all over the place. And he was quite impressed. No hate at all, nothing bad from what I recall.
I've been to Sofia and I remember very well how Roma are treated like second class citizens there.
The problem is, our society does not have any room left for the former Gypsi way of life. These people are forced (by their own conservatism, but also by the society they live iin) to live on the border of society.
The financial crisis hasnt done anything good either since its made the the middle class even thighter and social exclusion has risen, while acceptance of these people, who are regarded as parasites, has dropped.
I dont mean its ok to steal or anything and criminals should be punished according to law. And I would not let anyone steel from me or mug my girlfriend. I'd probably be cautious aswell.
Still, the rhetoric of some people here has the same colour as their shit. And I'm not sure they are even aware of that.

well.
seeing a lot of people robed in the bus, knowing that if you say something you will get silenced by 4 more from the crowd.
police ignoring reports of stolen wallets, because the mugger is not a social threat.
if you hit one in close combat you will get a razor blade in the face. sane razor with which the cut people bags/backpacks/pants.
going to the police with a video tape, and they ignore it, because that video camera is not authenticated, and the action was a penal one, not civil, so you need a judge approved surveillance before the act. and you will never get that. personal attacks trying to get your phone when you are talking and not paying atention, opening car doors stealing you stuff when you leave from intersection. and many more.
99% of those action i saw where made by gypsy.
but i dont hate them as a group.
actually, at my country house i pay them (there are 2-3 families which i know) to do stuff from me. like prepare the ground for the winter. a lot of agricultural stuff, which i dont have the time to do it. to gather potato. i'm actually friend with them. i trust them with my door entrance key, to go there if there is something to do, and i cannot be there. i borrow them money, knowing that i will get them back, or at least they will do something for me for that money.
but still, i wear a pepper spray and a knife based on my experience. better to be safe than sorry. funny enough, in town, not at my country house location  . village seems to be a lot safer.

It's much, much safer now than it was ten, fifteen years ago. A lot of the "hood" mentality died down when they realized it leads nowhere. Nowadays there's one neighborhood or two which should be avoided at night, but you never know. I heard of stolen wallets and phones or even backpacks from my friends and pretty gruesome stories, such as a friend of ours was punched in the temple and she spent a few days out of consciousness. I'd rather avoid that, be it myself or my girlfriend, ESPECIALLY after she was robbed in plain freakin daylight.
