How is always-online a bad thing though? Isn't being connected important to the social side, receiving economy updates/patches and so forth. Star Citizen is always online too right?

The thing is, it could never be 100% offline, as all the procedurally created star systems are created on servers, not in the client PC. As such, I can't understand exactly how they could translate that into an offline feature. (I know Frontier did it, but that's not in the same league of complexity.)

Tolerance to bullshit? Me? Laughing

I just saw this coming a mile away and am not surprised in any way. I'm just afraid to say anything bad (or good) about ED and SC because there's always pricks like you attacking me straight away, nitpicking on every word I say about these games. I'm either a hater or a fanboy and in this case you're being extra hilarious, because I've been one of the few who's been saying that Frontier are no better than CIG.

But it's okay, I'll leave the thread again. I've got better things to do than this shit.

I'm not surprised or even affected by this, but even to me who am probably what you lot would consider a fanboy, this is a very very low blow

To counter what sabin was saying about the forums, the 110 mass thread in there is probably 60-70% disgust at this move.

This won't disappear quietly, I'm sure

I'm also not much affected by this.
But this means No Server = No Game. And that's a big BS.
I don't remember if they have promised this during the KS campaign, but if they have, they can/should be sued.

*ponders*

Well, yes they COULD make this particular game into a single player, offline game. And yes, the game was developed months ago with the knowledge it would NEVER be offline, the fact which was somehow not passed this onto the people paying and 'testing'. And yes, Community Manager Brookes IS coming across as a slightly insufferable, smug prick with his cookie cut, slightly condescending replies to forum posts...

Oh, and that Mr Brookes has also now confirmed that you 'only need to go online to complete certain transactions, such as any trading'...

Yeah ok, my cynicism has returned to normal... apologies for the momentary lapse.... Laughing

Clearly the online aspect is DRM and RMT related, and also the original KS campaign clearly stated that offline play as part of the original plan. Of course, plans do change, but it would be responsible for game developers to involve their beta testers of such changes - you know, the ones who paid £50+ to test?

Sigh... and it was going so well too Sad

He is a smug prick and the fact that he plays this off as "best for everyone" and how "we didn't come to this decision lightly" - yet funnily enough didn't see fit to tell anyone until 2 years into development, and only then as a footnote in a newsletter that was twisted in PR speak bullshittery. Fuck off. He's a lying cheating cunt, just like the rest of the team. Also, does anyone remember this?

https://archive.today/kCfuD

ding ding ding ding

Dynamic in-game advertising from 3rd party advertising agencies. Funny how this was uncovered in August and suddenly, two months later, game is made online-only and offline functionality has been stripped.

"Funny"

Also, I apologise to Tungsten. I've read the entire thread now (seriously, I'm fuming about this decision. I had every intention of buying E:D but not now, I refuse to purchase online-only arbitrary DRM infested bullshit) and it really does seem like the majority are pissed and complaining about the decision, but it's the vocal minority that are skewing the discourse by attacking the complainers and fanboy splooging all over Michael Brooke's tits.

~edit~

The gaming media is finally starting to get wind of it;

http://vrfocus.com/archives/8781/elite-dangerous-offline-mode-dropped-hit-community-backlash/

I truly hope this goes all round the major sites and that FDEV get suitably reamed for it in the media.

Yes... good point, I'd not forgotten that either. If I start seeing advertising for things available today, I will block every damn port until it blocks the advertising - and if that breaks the game I will complain to the highest possible court, because if you can't play a game you have paid for, without forced advertising (which isn't relevant to the game in any way), then I deem that to be not just unethical, but something that I should be able to claim against.

I hope people stick to their guns and truly demand refunds and I hope, I really hope, that the financial sting is keenly felt by FDEV. Bait and switch, disingenuous, bullshit like this needs to be clamped down on. They took millions from investors and millions from backers for a game and a promise they're no longer delivering on. Urgh, reminds me of Star Command actually. I want this game to succeed, I really do, we need more space sims - but I don't want it to succeed by underhanded tactics and cheating bullshit, nor do I want EA-like lies and pushes for "online only"

We need more space sims, not more forced online titles.

I suspect we are already past the zenith anyway, but this sort of thing is likely to put the kibosh on Kickstarter as a viable route for mid-tier developers to get game funding. Which is a real shame, as there really does need to be a way for the likes of Obsidian, inXile, Larian, etc. to raise funds without suckling at the teat of a publisher or other investor.

There's another dark aspect to all this; servers need money to run and not just odds and ends from expansion sales that eventually dry up, but a continual stream of steady and sizeable cash. Same shit with Star Citizen which has been conveniently brushed aside for now while they show off something shiny to distract the audience. Where is this money coming from? Both games "claim" no subscription fees yet, surprise!, both games *require* online connections and persistent internet access even when travelling inside "instances" (Brooke confirmed that the servers are for whenever you travel to a new system, interact with players or even purchase trade goods at a station) - so again, where is this stream of revenue coming from that keeps the servers - the glorious servers that have to render the entire galaxy and calculate all the changes and dynamism and absolutely not bullshit like EA's server farm claims honest!!!! - alive?

Yeah, microtransactions (I'm still fully convinced SC will renege on their "promise" that they'll shut them down once the game launches) and subscriptions. ED has now removed the offline functionality they promised and added hidden live and dynamic advertising in the game. Who wants to bet subscriptions are next? Oh they'll play them off as "not mandatory for the game experience, they're PREMIUM that ENHANCE but aren't REQUIRED.. spinspinspin"

*sigh*

Holy.

Shit.

This supposedly DRM-free game not only now has online authentication (no, the servers aren't required to calculate the universe. That's lies.) but now apparently your save files are digitally locked to prevent others from using them too?

  • No capital ships that you can all dock to and go about the universe together.

  • Bounties go to the player who scored the last hit with no recognition of individual players contribution.
  • The instance system makes it hard if not impossible to meet up with friends in open play.
  • Missions don't scale, support group play.
  • There is no function for group players to jump together, something that is necessary if you were escorting a high value cargo carrying freighter.
  • No voice comms. built in.
  • There is no point to multi-player. Eve does have at least territorial control which gives advantages in terms of resources.

Actually, scratch that, I think you *do* know what it means but do not know how to apply it to this situation. MMOs need online connectivity. That's it. End of Story. Close the Book. End the relationship. Tell dad you don't like him anymore.

You repeatedly saying that it is DRM, doesn't make it any more true.
