Haven't you seen yourself in a mirror yet? You see yourself from the side.

Why am I watching my character from the side? This makes 0 sense! I'm a practiced human being and this game makes zero sense to me!

This is a fucking game, not a simulator of any kind.

There are good and bad books about war ("All Quiet on the Western Front" being one of the better), but still nobody complains: "Why the hell I am learning about war by reading rows of letters and interpreting them in my head as text?"

That's because the narrative instrument (text in case of a book, 2D side view in case of many games) is accepted by both the author and the reader/player. The narrative instrument used does not prevent anyone to critically review the authenticity and quality of the content itself.

That's why your attack against such instrument is silly and pointless, while the metacritic review offers very good points from a person who knows something about survival situations.

The game presents itself as a realistic depiction of a war from civilian's viewpoint, and thus it makes sense to judge whether it fulfills this premise or not. In my point of view, it falls short, being just a sort of Sims game in a war setting.

If/when I play this, I will regard it as just a puzzle game, not survival. But I am gonna try it before I buy it, that's for damn sure. Very Happy

Exactly! It's just a resource management game (game!!!!) in a specific setting.

The narrative instrument (certain gameplay limitations in this case) should be accepted by the players as well. I mean i doubt even that "survival expert" would complain about not having to manually take a dump with every chacter and watch out for female cycles.

All the "i've been through the war" stuff is just simple pr and has to do with the setting and the (rather crude) message the game sends.

There are plenty of actual game design and gameplay flaws that are mentioned in the review and earlier in this thread (like the inability to send multiple people to scavenge, ridiculous crafting reqs, etc) but they are just that - bad game design and have nothing to do with realism.

So I'm playing this for a few hours now. I like the Alienware support, nice little thunder effects on the keyboard Very Happy Game is really well polished, got to give them that.

What do some of the door icons mean, though? When in combat mode, there are 2 additional icons above the door, but it's unclear what they do. I only saw them once, but with an enemy behind it so I hesitated to click. And just as I wanted to click one, he opened the door and I had to kill him face to face.

Resource management is a bit weird, with a stupendous amount of required stuff at times. Especially components and wood.

i think you're referring to the cover mode. gives you a little defense bonus during a shootout

How the hell do you heat the place up.

When i built a stove it only raises the temperature to +2c

Does boarding up the windows help with that as well ?

Ah ok, pretty useless when all you have is a knife then Very Happy

Game's pretty easy so far (but I'm only at day 12), once you got a rotation system going.

I started with the focus on getting a level 2 workbench, so I could board up the place early on and getting traps and water collectors as soon as I was able so raids can focus on material and tradeable stuff.
A single trap gave me 2 food per day, for 5 consecutive days, when using fertilizer as bait, which was nice.
It's not getting filled anymore, though, so I'm guessing I need another trap or another type of bait.

Yes, and also you can stack the fuel for the heating unit. I believe it was 4 times (8 degree).

When you have a hatchet, you can start chopping up the furniture in the base, so you should have plenty of fuel and wood.

food in traps is randomized, you just hit a streak and now it's averaging out. the type of bait doesn't matter either, just use fertilizer (which is the most useless item if you don't have a garden)

I only wish I could cut down the stupid tree that is right next to that stupid house. Should last an month at least.

In a town with shortages of firewood, there would be ZERO trees.

Or melting ice which requires additional fuel, while you have a heater blazing with 6 fuel parts.

Once you know how to prioritize during the first 2, 3 days, though, the requirements aren't really that big of a deal anymore later on.
Finished another game yesterday which started in winter, but that didn't really make things a lot harder (you get a free heater and you find more firewood while scavenging your house). I did start with Boris (biggest inventory), admittedly.

Finally got my box version! 60 polish zloty in mediamarkt (it's like 14 euro).
I hope they will fix some crafting issues like ones mentioned in this thread in future patches.

Quote:
11 bit Studios is bringing its popular survival sim This War of Mine to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a new perspective.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones explores the “hardships of wartime survival” as seen from the perspective of a child.

It puts players in charge of a group of both adults and children trying to survive a besieged city with a lack of food and supplies. Making hard choices and sacrifices along the way, and making sure the children are protected and taken care of in the process.

This can involve finding a part to fix a broken toy for kids to play with in the daylight. Players will also need to console them at time, forming a important bond.

Along with this expanded version of original title, the PlayStation 4 edition also boasts an exclusive extra shelter known as the “Large Mansion.”

It contains survivors the player must care for and how the “building is shaped, how many floors it has, how well it’s fortified and prepared as a potential hideout” will all have an influence on the core gameplay.

This gritty and heart-felt experience will be available digitally on January 29th, 2016.

no info what they will do on steam
