Those who vote for Fable are either 4-12 years old. Or are casual gamers who couldn't care less for game depth.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Yes 'only' 1 guy who voted for fable and explained his reasons, maybe it just shows the target audience of fable?

Try Gothic II + addon since it has a much better plot and atmosphere than Morrowind (which is still awesome if you have both of the addons and _very_ much time on your hands)

It's like chalk and cheese. Gothic 2 is the greatest RPG ever made and with the The Night of the Raven expansion, it's the greatest game ever made period.
Only Oblivion and Gothic 3 can top it.
Fable..................bleh

too bad gothic's combat system kicked my ass or I'd like it more. But considering Morrowind had a similar (first person real time) combat system, between the two I'd still pick Gothic merely because it wasn't near as boring as morrowind and the prostitutes were more entertaining.

Wait a second. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I feel like a fool missing out on a game everyone is praising here...
I played Morrowind, really appreciated the depth and size of the game but got bored a day after. Played Fable and vomitted a few minutes after.
I have yet to experience a great RPG. I love DeusEx, system shock 2 and thief. Should I hunt for Gothic??

Yes. Both of them actually, and get NOTR if you can before you play G2.

Gothic 2 was a pain to find (well...through unofficial channels heh). I didn't even bother with NOTR because it's even harder to find (because i'm not leet with uber access to anything).
Did NOTR change stuff in G2 at all or is it primarily a content expansion to extend the story?

It changes the game a lot and you have to start a new game to play it, which I why I suggest that anyone starting G2 now should get the expansion at the same time. The downside of NOTR is that it also makes the game much harder.

Honestly I loved getting my ass handed to me by a young wolf, when I was just fighting it with a stick and no armor. It's more realistic really.

I heard there was ar multi with English version of NOTR released in Hungary a good while back or something. I guess this is the one you played because no official UK or US verson was ever released and it unlikely it will be released as Gothic III is coming. Has any group released that Hungary NOTR it though? EDIT: It looks as if Atari has the exclusive publishing rights and NOTR will NOT be released in the US or the UK.

NOTR won't be released in the US, but Gothic 2 Gold is supposed to ship next week. I assume that will be available in the UK, no clue when though.
And yes, I played the Hungary/Poland version with English audio. I don't think there was a release of it by a real group. I had to go slumming to find it. ^^
And I agree about the difficulty being fine, AM. I just thought it worth mentioning to people who haven't already played G2 through before. Best bet would probably be to play through Gothic 1 to get familiar with the combat system (although I would still recommend learning the new controls, as they are a lot better in the long run) and then going on to play Gothic 2 with NOTR.

Yep:
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/259830.asp
and it will include the expansion NOTR. Hah, so no point in finding the German then doing the english mod or hunting down the Hungary version. Wthin 10-15 days some group will release it.
Oh, and BTW, to the thread starter, there is nothing wrong with Fable, or particularly Fable: The Lost Chapters (Fable with an expansion). Don't let everyone tell you its kiddie or any of that shit. Gothic2 is deeper but the combat system is shit and I always hated the controls. Gothic 2 is a little better in terms of RPG depth but as you can see, Fable beat out Gothic 2 at gamerankings:
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/926702.asp?q=fable
Of course, of course I have played practically every good RPG that has ever come out going back to the original Bards Tale in the mid '80s. Nothing wrong with Fable- it can be fun as there is a lot of hack and slash. Hell, why not grab both games? Its not like you are paying for them, is it? I played Fable when it first came out but have forgotton the storyline so I am going to play Fable: The Lost Chapters (just grabbed it) and in a couple of weeks when Gothic 2 Gold comes out I will grab it and play that for the 2nd time as well.

Well, if you liked morrowind, you should love gothic2. Gothic2 is much more immersive than morrowind. It combines elemts of morrowind (complete freedom, huge open landscapes, they actually look a lot better and organic than morrowind) and the storytelling/immersiveness of deus ex and system shock (though on another level, its not that comspiracy/fear atmosphere of ss and dx, its more as I said the sense of immersiveness).
Cool thing about gothic series is that fealing of weakness when you're a beginner. You really kinda get scared of entering certain forests, you know that theres some weird big animals in there, but you've never seen one before and you know you can't stand a chance with the little troll club you're holding. No other game has delivered that sense of weakness of the player so convinceingly (except operation flashpoint maybe, but thats a completely other thing )

I remember reading a review on NOTR that said the combat was so hard now, that you had to be a masochist to play it ;-P

They've said the English release will be much closer to the German one this time. I can read German just fine though, so I don't care either way. ^^
