...6 days until xmas eve!
I really used to love xmas, all the traditions, the gifts and the food!
Lost that great xmas feeling when I was 12-13, but at least until I about 20 I loved the gifts. After that I could buy what I wanted and the magic was totally gone. But NOW even the food part is gone  Its just temporary and I won't go into detail, but im on a no sugar, no gluten and no milk diet. And pretty much everything contains a little bit of sugar, unless you make it yourself. The milk and gluten part is pretty damn hard too. And most gluten free products suck... gluten binds, so the gluten free products just feel weird. (feel free to post some south park referanses  )
Oh well, im still allowed to eat meat, so I guess thats something. Meals now are pretty much a lot of vegatibiles and quality meat, but with no sauces or gravy... or potatoes
Steaks and bacon keep me alive 
And the gifts... its just preassure and anxiety to get something for all the people you know will buy gifts for you. Yeah, its nice that some people care enough to buy you gifts... but it just gives me a bad conscience if my gifts aren't worth as much and whatnot. And when you have no idea what to buy you just try your best and probably find something they didn't really care about in the first place

Until I was 7 years old, Christmas was magical every year. After that, it became rather spotty due to divorce of my parents and Christmas often being the day where there would be fights and so on.
On the other hand, some of my best memories are from the holidays including one night where half my family was at my father's house and we got to stay up really late (I was 12 or so) and watch Space Balls for the first time on TV while the "adults" were drinking and chatting.
As an adult, it's very different because part of the fun as a kid, is getting to experience it all without the pressure, without the running back and forward to get everything ready, cooking food, rushing, etc. etc. and with gifts at the end.
But since me and my brother are single, we just end up on Christmas Eve at my place, eating gourmette off a heated stone. Very little preparation needed, very tasty, watch a good movie during dinner and enjoy the evening. The day after, my nephew comes along to eat the left overs and we hang out with family.
My advice: just go into it slowly, try to enjoy the atmosphere, try to enjoy yourself, don't overdo anything.

I didn't mind it really, for me it was mostly just a holiday where our close family got together. Which happened not that much. We stop giving gifts once you are out of the kid phase, so no hassle with the gifts at all. Just a day we spent together with good food and silly games... That's for what I did in Belgium.
The Swedish version is a bit more hell for me. We have to go to my fiancee's dad and her mother's parties... so two instead of one, it starts off with this fricking irritating stupid cartoons that I had to endure every time I was in Sweden the past 8/9 years. Starts at 15.00 so it's a long day :/ Lost it's 'charm' the second time I saw it. Plus christmas over here brings back the gifting. It also usually means a bigger audience with nieces,nephews, aunts and uncles and all that... usually their is some animosity going on with a few... they try hard to not show it yet it's obvious. Also doesn't help that I'm more of an introvert and I'm usually itching to leave after 2/3 hours.
So... I love christmas in Belgium, not so much fond of the fakery I get to see here. 
Ah well, my own fault... the choice was mine if we were going to Belgium or not. I think I would have preferred some quality time with just me and my girl this year.

Same here, when I was younger the whole december month seemed sooo long. like it lasted a whole season.
Now my kids are older (18 and 13) and they aren't really into it, it flies by. its just another month like any other.
Only thing I like about Christmas is I can get eggnog at the store, and only time of year I can listen to songs I actually like, like Carol of the Bells or Dance of the sugarplum fairy, without people looking at me weird.
Try playing Carol of the bells in july just because you like that song...everyone asks you why you're playing it.

That's not a nice way to treat his mom. It's once a year, you can handle that meal you've had just 20 times before.

She's cooking her everyday meals for Christmass too, or she cooks something special but same for each Christmass? Because in the latter case, it's not problem with her, you're just being a jerk if you are bothered to eat the same food in 365-day distance. And the whole event it's not about food at all.

Oh man I'm so happy when this years christmas season is over. I was at 4 different christmas parties where secret santa was played, had to get some junk present each time. Then the companies christmas party, and the holidays are still to come, with all grandparents, parents, gfs parents and family... graaah!

the event does become about food if she spends an entire day before doing the cooking, when every year i told her that we should go out for dinner , im not going to keep staying nice to such brainwashed and stubborn people who believe in tradion shit
u guys are the jerks pretending to sit there and enjoying it making it all fucked up for the rest of us people expect us to pretend too

I still like our non religious christmassy atmosphere a lot, even if times have changed and the excitement for presents is no longer there (not even the presents are xD).
If anything, it's a way for me to stay close to friends and family, have some seriously unhealthy dinners and enter the high cholesterol club for a while, which is something nice for a change since our crazy everyday life is making us forget about living properly.

She spends two days creating the food for you, and you don't even show up. I'd give you a big ol' backhand slap if i had the chance.
It's not up to you to decide if she should be traditional or not. It's her choice.

I hate giving gifts, it's so stressful :S
Like, I don't know what to give to my close ones. I suck at giving gifts :\
And since I won't get anything that is related to computers or Lego, I'm not really excited about getting gifts too much xD
I don't mind the gifts, it's just that I think that it's stressful for others as well. My bf got me a nice tea blend - green tea with coconut and almonds, he bought a nice container, and an infuser that has a ducky that floats in your cup. I'm not a crazy tea lover, but that's really cool gift.
And I found a pdf of periodic tables of typefaces, colored it a bit in illustrator, and printed it out (70x48 cm). But I feel like I could have done something more. He liked it, since he is a graphic designer and all, but still...

We usually get back to parents' house, sister and i are apart in different cities, but we all reunite during xmas - it's all fun and games until my sister starts yelling at my nephew because he doesn't eat his food, then dad starts yelling at my sister for yelling at my nephew - and there goes atmosphere.
Still enjoyable, because we're all together and actually enjoy mom's same recipe for steak in more than 28 yrs.
But I enjoy xmas for it's dayoffs from work, i really need them, even if it's 3-4 days.
