My Topping NX1 Portable Amp arrived It's working perfectly. My volume is now at 40, and usually it was somewhere between 80-100 range ^^
Thanx SpykeZ for recommending it

Yeah, so my nephew accidentally dropped and broke my headphones so now I'm looking for new ones.
What I read Sennheiser HD600 seem to give you most bang for the buck (mostly for gaming and some movies).
So before I order tjem, anything the experts would like to add?

I would say bang for the buck is more reserved for headphones sub 200 lol, once you get past that point you've got money to spend on something, nice they'll all be great for the most part. The 600's are a good choice, from what I read stay away from the 650's, they were a worthless upgrade.
Back to the point, open back cans, even my HD 598's fucking amazing in games. FPS are great since the sound stage is widened but RPGs? They REALLY come to life with the ambiance!
The 600's are 300 ohms though, what are you using to drive them?
I also have to ask just to make sure, with the thread being titled noise canceling, is that something you want? Cause open back headphones do not keep sound in at ALL

I'm going to buy that later as these headphones are quite expensive.
I was thinking of getting something portable, you mentioned some time ago a FIIO (or something like that) but I still have no idea really.

Nope, just a pair of good headphones that are comfortable, good for gaming and movies and will last me for quite some time (as I'm not an audiophile that would be ace). ^_^

If you are gonna go with the HD600 you will need an amp. Without it you will struggle to get any proper use out of those.
On my onboard audio, for example, which has some kind of a headphone amp built-in (even has a dedicated power connector for it on the motherboard) I have to max out my volume to get it sound at an acceptable level (just barely), and even then it sounds "lacking" in comparison to what I would get from my dedicated sound card which has a proper amp on it.
Even when getting an amp, if by portable you mean one of those smaller ones (fit in a pocket, mainly targeted at mobile phones) you will have to look at the specs, because most of those are not good enough to drive 300 Ohm headphones properly.
With Fiio, for example, the only one good enough by looking at the specs is the E09. Some of the others might work as well, but that's not a sure thing.
Headphones themselves are great though

Ok, so I buy the headphones now. Put them away til I get a decent amp. What would you guys recommend with these (please don't let it cost an arm and a leg). ^_^
Post Scriptum
The amp wouldn't have to be tiny or small, just not a huge thing as I'd like to put it on or near my desk without it taking too much space.

You can still use the headphones. They'll probably just sound a little muddy and you won't hear their potential until you get an amp for them.
As I've recommended before in my audio thread, and I think at least 3 people have bought it now, an amazing entry level amp:
http://www.amazon.com/TOPPING-Tripath-Subwoofer-Amplifier-Digital/dp/B00H6XDE4S
It's what I started out with and still have it. It's part of my daisy chain of amps. I use it to power my speakers now. Also has a built in DAC so it'll bypass your sound card so you get a better cleaner sound. It's not very big at all
This is from BestHijacker who I just helped upgrade
The amp however is not portable. There's a whole world of portable ones but yes, FiiO makes some of the more popular ones.
DingoD needed one so I linked him to this, he really likes it

Thanks for the tips.
The amp looks really sleek actually and not that big so it could easily fit almost anywhere on my desk (probably between my monitors).
I can only find the amp on ebay tho (so it's like 72£) but it's still affordable so it will be a buy later on. ^_^
Another quick question about the DAC.
So just plug in a USB between the computer and the amp or?
I'm trying to download the manual but for some reason the download is still just starting (for like 3 minutes now). o.O
PS
Just got the manual and sweet, if I understand this correctly it goes via USB.
Now, does that mean I still can have my regular speakers plugged into the onboard audio and have two working outputs (one through the amp/headphones and one through the MB audio/speakers)?

You can obviously have them both connected, but you will need to manually switch between audio devices in your OS.
Some applications (media players) will also allow you to set the default audio device in their settings, so you can have your movie player output through speakers and music player output through the headphones, for example.

It'll come with a USB cable, the normal size, and you plug it in like any other device. Plug it in and windows will detect it.
On the front you'll see two buttons. The one on the right says "aux" and "usb". To use it as a sound card you'll want to set it to USB. You'll then go into your windows sound properties and select the VX1 as your default sound device.
Wallah.
You can have both plugged in but you'll have to go back into your sound properties and change the default sound device back to your sound card.
Now the next great part about the VX1 is it also runs passive speakers. So once you're ready and you get the money, you can throw those trash not really efficient for anything computer speakers on ebay or something and get some nice bookshelf speakers. You'll hook them up the same way you do a stereo receiver
You're no longer limited to whatever crap Logitech, Corsair or whoever else makes.
You can hook up some Polks:
You can hook up some Klipsch:
You can hook up some Audioengine:
You can hook up some JBL:
Or some Axioms:
Or some Whaferdales:
....I think you get the point now lol

The back of the VX1:
The R OUT and L OUT is where you'll plug the speaker wire into, either by twisting the wire and putting it into a hole or just using banana plugs.
AUX IN can be used by any other devices that outputs sound. Say, you have a Phono amp for your turntable, it would plug into the AUX connections on the back and all you do on the front of the VX1 is click the button and switch it from USB to Aux and it'll play whatever music/sound coming into the Aux.

The bose's do have the noise cancelling as an added bonus though..
Edit: Bit of testing - the base feels far better on the Bose headphones - think I'll stick with using those for now! |
Closed headphones will almost always have better bass than open back. Open back is usually better for games due to the open soundstage. Electronic will sound better in closed headphones where most everything else likes open. But you got both so you're golden

I think Topping should start paying me commission lmao

If I'm at home it's whatever's on my hard drive using Mediamonkey, ive mostly replaced my MP3 with FLAC/ALAC. Still some electronic stuff that's still in 192/320 but that shit doesn't benefit from lossless the way other music does.
If I'm mobile I use my DX50 with an external micro 64GB card
Uses a custom Android OS and a wolfson dac and IPS screen

I got it before it went retail too so I paid close to 300 for it lol Gotta remember though, I'm American, there's a gun concealed on my hip

Aye, was looking up on them when Spykez mentioned it and went: 'fuck dat' at the price they ask here.
Not that I wanted one right away, but when I do I'll most likely pick it up in Belgium where I used to buy my DJ gear. Should still have a discount there.

The price's I found them here are double (at least) of that of what I found them on ebay.
So I don't mind ordering these from Hong Kong/UK/Germany even if I have to wait 3 weeks before receiving them. ^_^

Haha, I made my own make-shift headphone 'stand'.
I taped a pair of curtain-holders onto the side of my desk and use that as a stand.
Cost me circa 1 €, Super-happy-fun-time! \o/
